About the Author

Elsie Jones-Smith is a clinical psychologist, a licensed psychologist, a counselor educator, and the president of the Strengths-Based Institute, which provides consultation to schools and organizations dealing with youth experiencing challenges with violence, lack of a sense of purpose, and drug addiction. She is the developer of two theories in psychology: strengths-based therapy (SBT) and ethnic identity development; an article about this theory was featured as a major contribution to psychological research by The Counseling Psychologist in 1985. She is a member of the American Academy of Counseling Psychology, and a fellow in two divisions of the American Psychological Association, including Division 17 Counseling Psychology. She holds dual PhDs in clinical psychology and counselor education. She is the author of Strengths-Based Therapy: Connecting Theory, Practice, and Skills; Spotlighting the Strengths of Every Single Student; and Nurturing Nonviolent Children. Previously a professor at Temple University, Michigan State University, and Boston University, she has served on numerous editorial boards.

Therapy theories

The book is the most current in its field -- and contains a wealth of information for a grad student, the beginning therapist -- or someone already in the field who is looking for a refresher. Heavy duty, especially Chapter 2. There are very few pictures, thus LOTS of material to take in.

"Several years ago it was my pleasure to become acquainted with Dr. Elsie Jones-Smith's insightful text THEORIES OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY and having used it repeatedly in teaching graduate level courses for marriage and family therapy students, I've found her work to be a veritable treasure chest packed with delightful discoveries! Not only does Dr. Jones-Smith explore many of the traditional theories of personality, she surprises readers with pleasant and informative explorations of some of the more recent schools, including discussions on "Motivational Interviewing," "Expressive Art Therapies," "Japanese, Chinese, African, Arabian, Approaches to Psychotherapy," etc, as well as very capable presentations on several "post modern" theories, such as "Solution Focused" and "Narrative Therapy" models. In my opinion, Dr. Jones-Smith has done what others have fail to do, by providing students, practitioners and professors, an exhaustive, reader-friendly, well documented manual guiding both the theory and praxis of therapy. Moreover, I'm thrilled that the Second Edition of this Text, now includes helpful materials on "Neuroscience and Neuropsychotherapy," making the book even more valuable to current readers. In short, I highly recommend, to anyone interested in growing in their mastery and understanding of the human person and the therapeutic arts, Jones-Smith's THEORIES OF COUNSELING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY."

About the Author
Larry Coutts (Ph.D., University of Windsor) is the Director of Research and Development for the human resource consulting company EPSI Inc. He is a former Assistant Professor in the Applied Social Psychology division at the University of Windsor. He has held positions with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as director of the Organizational Design and Job Evaluation Branch and as a senior research principal with both the Personnel Research Branch and the Canadian Police College. His research interests include industrial and organizational psychology, specifically personnel selection (assessment centers, simulation exercises, structured interviews, and testing) and organizational change and development. Much of his published research has focused around law enforcement settings (personnel selection in law enforcement, police hiring and promotion, senior police executive development, etc.).

Frank Schneider (Ph.D., University of Florida) is Professor Emeritus of Psychology, University of Windsor. He is a cofounder of the doctoral program in Applied Social Psychology at the University of Windsor. He coauthored a textbook on differential psychology and has published articles related to a variety of topics, including policing, group dynamics, organizational effectiveness, evaluation research, social psychology of education, gender roles, domestic violence, helping behavior, race relations, nonverbal communication, attribution theory, and adjustment of the elderly. His current research interests are in the areas of community policing and police organization effectiveness.

Jamie Gruman is an Assistant Professor of Organizational Behaviour in the Division of Management at the University of Toronto at Scarborough. He earned his Ph.D. in applied social psychology at the University of Windsor. While completing his degree, he taught in both the Psychology Department and Odette School of Business at the University. He has published papers in such areas as social psychology, personality, and statistics. His current research interests focus on individual differences and social psychology in the workplace. He has consulted and delivered seminars for corporations and not-for-profit agencies, including Ford Motor Company, Deloitte & Touche, Hiram Walker & Sons and The Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada.

About the Author

Author David Baskerville received a Ph.D. in music from UCLA. His background included staff composer-conductor for NBC-Hollywood; arranger for Nelson Riddle, Paramount Pictures, and 20th Century Fox; television producer for BBC-London; conductor at Radio City Music Hall; trombonist with the Seattle Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and NBC-Hollywood orchestra; Executive Vice President of Ad-Staff, Inc.; producer of award-winning broadcast commercials; Executive Editor of Tor Music Publishing Company; and President of Sherwood Recording Studios, Los Angeles (subsequently operated by Warner Bros. Records).

He also served as a consultant to companies in the entertainment industry, such as Walt Disney Productions, and to research and marketing firms, such as Vidmar Com­muni­cations, Los Angeles.

As an educator, Dr. Baskerville created and directed the music management program at the University of Colorado at Denver, where he became professor emeritus. He was a guest lecturer, consultant, or clinician at USC, UCLA, Chicago Musical College, Hartt School of Music, the Ohio State University, University of Miami, and Trebas Institute, Canada.

He was a featured speaker at national conventions of the Music Educators National Conference, College Music Society, National Association of Jazz Educators, and the National Association of Schools of Music.

Excellent textbook for all PR students

All PR practitioners would benefit from the solid, comprehensive grounding in communications issues presented in this book. The emphasis on cultural and ethical influences presented throughout is vital to all public relations work and the discussion is well presented here. The chapters on writing present useful overviews on the process and common PR materials. However, some descriptions of materials are very brief and all assume the student has an adequate knowledge of basic writing skills and techniques. Readers who really want to focus on writing will want to supplement this book with others that have more in-depth coverage of writing issues and content ideas.

About the Author
David Hyerle is an independent researcher, author, and consultant focused on literacy, thinking-process instruction, and whole-school change. He is the developer of the Thinking Maps language and is presently codirector of Designs for Thinking, a consulting and research group based in New England.

According to my personal assessment, this book is the third in a trilogy of research-based books written by David Hyerle, an educational researcher & founder of Innovative Sciences in the 70's/80's.

The earlier two research-based books are:

- Visual Tools for Constructing Knowledge;
- Field Guide to Using Visual Tools;

The author is very smart to use these three research-based books as a self-promotional vehicle to market his core learning technology, embedded in what they call the 'Thinking Maps'.

In a nut shell, 'Thinking Maps' integrate thinking skills & mapping techniques. They are based on our fundamental thinking processes: We analyzes information in more or less eight different ways: define, describe, compare/contrast, classify, break down into parts, sequence,
cause/effect, establish relationships between things.

Application-wise, they comprise eight specific types of graphic organisers (the author prefers to use the term, visual tools) to help students & teachers in constructing knowledge, organising information, solving problems & communicating with others.

The eight tools are:

- Brace Map;
- Bridge Map;
- Bubble map;
- Circle map;
- Double Bubble Map;
- Flow Map;
- Multi-Flow Map;
- Tree Map;

Additionally, the core technology also includes a proprietary software, plus videos & other training manuals.

I can sense that their 'Thinking Maps' technology has been influenced somewhat by the Whimbey method, developed by Dr Arthur Whimbey. He wrote two great classics, 'Analytical Reading & Reasoning' & 'Mastering Reading Through Reasoning'.

There is only one singular snobbish aspect of 'Thinking Maps' products: They are only restricted to schools for system-wide implementation. Hence, the technology is, regrettably, not available to private individuals. They don't even bother to entertain enquires from solos.

In my earlier review of 'Visual Tools for Constructing Knowledge', I had mentioned that "This book is more suitable for teachers and students, and not so suitable for business readers...it cannot be used to cover all kinds of reading materials in schools. For examples, a story grid - which is not covered in the book - would be more appropriate to shape understanding of literature texts; a time line or time series - also not overed - would be more appropriate to track chronological events in history textbooks."

I added further that "For the businessman, this book can be somewhat boring, although one or two of the tools e.g. cluster and fishbone diagrams, can be used to organise visually one's thoughts or ideas while reading business books."

I have concluded in my review as follows: "Nevertheless, this book is still worth reading, especially if you want a deep understanding of why we are 'visual'. Also, David Hyerle's tools and ideas are still useful for the business reader, especially if one is pursuing business management studies e.g. MBA, in the evenings. The visual tools can be useful in that respect, particularly for probing understanding through the text, and taking/making personal notes."

Coming back to this book, which gives a panoramic view into schools (sometimes, their promotional literature mentions 3,000 schools, others mention 2,000 schools, so I don't know which one is true & correct?) that have successfully used their core technology on a school-wide basis, there is even one case study from Singapore.

In this book as well as in the earlier two books, the author shares many stories from teachers, principals, & trainers who have adopted their 'Thinking Maps' to increase student achievement & revitalize learning communities.

In retrospect, the first book gives quite a good introduction to graphic organisers &/or visual tools, in addition to their own 'Thinking Maps' technology. Tactically, it explains in quite elaborate details WHAT visual tools are, WHY we should use them, and HOW to get the most out of these tools.

The second book follows up with more quantified evidence to support their core technology in addition to more practical applications as part of the educational curriculum.

I reckon, for a first timer/beginner into visual thinking, especially one looking for applications within an eduational setting, the three books are definitely worth exploring.

Readers should also read Nancy Margulies' Mapping Innerspace, which adopts a spontaneous, free-form approach to using visual tools.

Best book to discuss research on Thinking Maps

First - buy directly from the publisher / author for about half the price. I am not sure why Amazon has it priced wrong.

This is the best book available to actually present research, sometimes soft and sometimes poorly documented (but the best out there on any type of mapping program), on what a set of eight visual primitives can do to improve student performance by using the primitives in Thinking Maps.

No book on the market can compare with the qualify of the material in this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is wondering how student achievement can be improved across all grades and across all subjects.

This book is especially recommended for parents of home based / homeschool students. By using Thinking Maps students of all types can improve their performance in any area. I am using information in this book as I develop a course in "Creating Intelligence".

Of greatest interest to me is that this book shows how Thinking Maps has been successful with preschool children all the way through to a community college's nursing program.

This is not a "how to" book but a book on showing that the system works. To get the "how to" you have to look to other resources.

A well-timed text, given the legislated requirement of performance standards in our K-12 educational system, as well as the continued need in the process of credentialing professionals.  This book would be useful to individuals retained to produce or coordinate standard-setting activites. It is abundantly apparent that the authors know standard setting and themselves have implemented numerous standard-setting procedures using different methods for different types of assessment programs.... Although the book is very practical, someone who has a fair amount of knowledge in standard setting will not feel shortchanged. There is a richness in the discussions of the methods that engages the reader, such as the different modifications of a method and the situational challenge that warranted each modification. Also, when a specific implementation of a method is discussed in detail, the authors are very conscientious in discussing the impetus for the adaptations. The historical perspective presented for some of the methods is quite intriguing.

About the Author
Gregory J. Cizek is Professor of Educational Measurement at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His background in the field of educa­tional assessment includes five years as a manager of licensure and certification testing programs for American College Testing (ACT) in Iowa City, Iowa, and 15 years of teaching experience at the col­lege level, where his teaching assignments have consisted primarily of graduate courses in educational testing, research methods, and statistics. He is the author of over 200 books, chapters, articles, conference papers, and reports. His books include Handbook of Educational Policy (Academic Press, 1998); Cheating on Tests: How to Do It, Detect It, and Prevent It (Lawrence Erlbaum, 1999); Setting Performance Standards: Concepts, Methods, and Perspectives (Lawrence Erlbaum, 2001); and Detecting and Preventing Classroom Cheating (Corwin Press, 2003). Dr. Cizek has served as an elected member and vice president of a local school board in Ohio, and he currently works with several states, organizations, and the U.S. Department of Education on tech­nical and policy issues related to large-scale standards-based testing programs for students in grades K–12. He began his career as an ele­mentary school teacher in Michigan, where he taught second and fourth grades.

Michael B. Bunch is Vice-President of Measurement Incorporated, a test development and scoring company serving the statewide assessment community. Dr. Bunch joined MI in 1982 and has built the research and development division of that organization into a team of more than 60 project directors, psychometricians, editors, content specialists, and support staff. Prior to joining MI, Dr. Bunch was a senior professional with NTS Research Corporation, where he provided ESEA Title I evaluation technical assistance to state education agencies. From 1976 to 1978, he was a research psychologist with the American College Testing Program (ACT). Dr. Bunch has authored dozens of professional and technical reports on a variety of topics--many on standard setting--and has presented his work at national conferences, including annual meetings of the American Educational Research Association (AERA), National Council on Measurement in Education (NCME), American Psychological Association (APA), Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), Education Commission of the States (ECS) and Adult Education Research Conference (AERC). He received his Ph.D. in psychological measurement from the University of Georgia.
