From the Author

They MADE me put a rating -- what could I do -- I wrote it!!

Okay, so YES, this is a textbook aimed at juniors or seniors in college. Hopefully, however, it also includes information which is of interest to those of us who live in families. Besides all the academic stuff highlighted above by the publisher, this book also includes chapters on:

Dating/Serious Dating/Cohabitation/Engagement/Marriage

The Impact of Adding Children to Nuclear and Step-families

Raising Children (including the effectiveness of various

parenting styles/encouraging higher self-

esteem/encouraging mastery orientation/logical

versus natural consequences)

Maintaining Closeness in Married Couples

Self-disclosure

Affection

Emotional Regulation/Expression

Supportiveness

Sexual Communication

Dealing with Conflict

Styles and strategies

Violence

Handling Substance Abuse/Eating Disorders/Depression in Families

The Power of Thought and Communication in Families

I tried to cover the research but still write in an approachable manner, so hopefully, it will be readable and have something interesting to say to anyone who is interested in families and how to live and communicate within them.

Also, on a personal note, after reviewing this literature for this book, I decided to return to school to get a masters in counseling psychology so that I can get a marriage and family therapist license. I think this book would be of interest to anyone therapeutically inclined because it explores the full range of family types and the processes that occur within all levels of families (married couples/parent-children/step-parent - step-child/siblings). Understanding the family context along with an understanding of the current U.S. mosaic of families will provide useful "normalizing" information for family members who are trying to cope with the normal processes that most family members experience.

May you too find something of relevance to you and your family. Improving family communication is certain to have long lasting effects on your family satisfaction AND stability -- both goals that most of us will hold in common.

Good books but needs an update
By Joshua Velásquez
The contents of the book are perfect for those who want to know about alternative psychotherapy approaches. By the way, most of the techniques are based in Jungian analytical perspective and Grof's breathwork. Maybe, Transpersonal Psychology should look towards an update.

'Teaching Number in the Classroom translates years of research into a very understandable and comprehensive approach for teaching children how the number system is structured and how to think like a mathematician.

For too many years there has been the perception that children who are struggling with mathematics don't know the basic facts. The reality is that these children lack number knowledge and skills. Teaching Number in the Classroom will guide the educational professional through the steps of understanding the development of "number sense", identifying the current levels of knowledge and providing instruction that helps children use the "framework of mathematics" to solve number problems.

Teaching Number in the Classroom is a thinking skills approach to mathematics. Children are taught a variety of strategies for solving mathematical problems. The teacher using this book will be able to help all children develop a strong foundation of mathematical understanding' - Carol Meland, K-3rd Grade Principal for the School District of Milton Wisconsin, USA

Diagnosing Student Strengths and Difficulties with Number Sense
By Math E. Matters
Teaching Number in the Classroom with 4-8 Year Olds contains highly detailed performance tasks that teachers can use to determine young children's strengths and weaknesses in number sense. It is a bit difficult to read this book cover-to-cover because the print size is small, and the language is quite technical. It is, however, worth the time spent reading it, as one would probably be hard pressed to find a source with more high-quality mathematics performance tasks than this book. The research and tasks come from the Math Recovery project, but teachers could make use of these tasks without having had Math Recovery training. I would recommend this book to early childhood teachers who are looking for ways to determine next teaching steps in number sense with their students.

Just the book I was looking for helping me with those students who are still having trouble with one-to-one correspondence as they count. Great practical and easy ideas and assessments to implement immediately, in a user-friendly format.

Solution-Focused Therapy (Brief Therapies series), by Bill O'Connell

`O'Connell presents a comprehensive introduction to Solution-focused therapy (SFT). His writing is accessible making this an easy book to read. The way in which the material is organized and presented is appealing. The tone of the writing is down to earth and I imagine that few readers would feel alienated by the language regardless of training or theoretical background. This book provides not only an in-depth introduction to SFT but also provides the more experienced therapist with further ideas and principles. O'Connell manages to keep an air of hope and optimism in his writing which left me with a renewed sense of enthusiasm for working with clients in a SFT way.

Having read a substantial amount of literature in brief therapy, I found this book to be one of the best I have come across. O'Connell communicates his ideas in a clear and rational way and most importantly with an essential dose of humanity. I would recommend this book to almost everyone regardless of their professional background as it instills a sense of hope and change' - Counselling Psychology Review

`A thoroughly enjoyable read about an inspiring approach to facilitating others without pathologising them, this book not only offers practical guidelines for beginners and validating supportive ideas for the more experienced, it could also inspire those who are simply interested in efficient and effective ways of empowering people via reminders of their potential to live zestful, creative, fruitful, connected lives' - Nurturing Potential

`Solution-Focused Therapy is a comfortable introduction to SFT, which is best suited for students or those new to the model, or to professionals in other fields. It supports the novice practitioner in feeling that providing good therapy is within their grasp. Bill O'Connell's presentation of solution-focused therapy encourages theoretical integration, practicality, and trust in the abilities of the client over purity. Hopefully, such an approach would appeal to all therapists' - The Brief Therapy Networks

Solution-Focused Therapy, Second Edition a is a popular introduction to the theory, practice and skills of an approach which is increasingly used by a variety of professionals including counsellors, psychologists, mental health workers, and social workers. Its popularity lies in the fact that it is both time-limited and cost-effective, which are key considerations for many practitioners nowadays.

For this, the Second Edition, the book has been fully revised and updated and now includes new sections on solution-focused supervision and running a solution-focused reflecting team. Most chapters include brief practice points for counsellors.

This book will be of great interest to trainees of solution-focused therapy, as well as practitioners who work in a range of contexts where the emphasis is on providing effective brief interventions.

Bill O'Connell is Director of Training for Focus on Solutions Limited in Birmingham. He was previously Head of the Counselling Department at Westhill College of Higher Education, Birmingham, and is co-edito of Handbook of Solution-Focused Therapy (Sage, 2003).

Review
"A book integrating developmental psychopathology within a vulnerability stress framework is highly desirable. Within my graduate psychopathology course, I strive to integrate these two areas but an appropriate text has been lacking!  This text seeks to fill the void." (Terri L. Weaver)

"Bringing together developmental psychopathology frameworks and the vulnerability-stress models of psychological disorders in an excellent idea.  I am aware of no other book that incorporates these two approaches.  Having taught Psychopathology courses for both masters and doctoral students, I reviewed many books to recommend and use in the courses.  It is my belief that a book of this type is needed particularly for graduate students." (Linda Guthrie)

"a blending of two important approaches to understanding psychopathology- the developmental approach and the vulnerability approach.  I think a book like this is timely, is needed, and would be of interest to professors who teach courses in psychopathology at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels." (Robin Lewis)

"I am continually looking for alternatives to the traditional undergraduate textbook of psychopathology…I prefer to assign edited volumes as primary texts in my classes because such volumes expose students to material that has not been "dumbed down” for undergraduates…a book combining the developmental and vulnerability-stress perspective is a useful addition and the editors generally have selected a strong list of  authors….This is precisely the  type of book I seek when choosing a textbook for my classes." (Carolyn Black Becker, Trinity University)

About the Author

Benjamin L. Hankin (Ph.D., Clinical Psychology, University of Wisconsin, Madison) is a clinical psychologist at the University of South Carolina . His primary areas include development of depression in children, adolescents, and young adults; cognitive vulnerability-stress models of depression; developmental psychopathology; gender differences in depression; and comorbidity of depression and other psychiatric disorders. He is particularly interested in research aimed at applying cognitive risk factors to predict depression and anxiety during adolescence and young adulthood and in understanding the developmental origins or cognitive vulnerability to depression. His research also examines the mechanisms through which various developmental precursors of risk, such as personality traits and maltreatment, may operate to contribute to vulnerability to psychopathology. He regularly teaches the basic undergraduate course on Abnormal Psychology as well as graduate courses on developmental psychopathology, theory and research of psychotherapy, and techniques of psychological intervention.

John R.Z. Abela received a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1999. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Psychology at McGill University, where he studies vulnerability to depression in children and adolescents. At the same time, he is a staff psychologist at Montreal Children's Hospital, where he also serves as Director of the Cognitive Behavior Therapy Clinic. At a young age, he has already established a name for himself. He received the Young Investigator Award from NARSAD in 2000 and again in 2003 and received the Young Psychologist Award at the XXVII International Congress of Psychology in July 2000.

best book on the subject
By HaleyB
I purchased this book for a class and found it to be imminently readable. While it does focus on a diathesis-stress perspective, it also reviews multiple other perspectives, such as gene x environment interaction. It's clear enough for someone new to the subject, without unnecessarily "dumbing down" the material. Definitely recommended.

Review
`Although primarily aimed at social workers, the content of this work is very relevant for other professionals who work with and for children, including trainee lawyers as an introduction to social work practice and the principles of child care law and practice upon which it is based. The book also provides insight for lawyers into the standards to be expected of social workers, which is helpful in children law work. Eileen Munro writes form the perspective of a depth of academic knowledge and many years of experience. I like the clarity of her style, and the ease with which she shares information in a palatable way' - Association of Lawyers for Children

About the Author

Eileen Munro is Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics, London, UK. With a background in both philosophy and social work, her work has focused on the reasoning skills needed to provide an effective child protection service. The work was taken up by many child protection services in several countries but, in working with management and practitioners to improve risk assessment and decision making, she realised that the individual decision maker is strongly influenced by organizational and social factors that also need to be understood in order to reduce error. A powerful framework for doing this is provided by the systems approach to investigating error that was developed in aviation and has been adapted to medicine in the US and UK. Professor Munro then worked with the Social Care Institute for Excellence in the UK to adapt this approach to use in child protection services and it is now being adopted widely in England. At the request of the Secretary of State for Education, she undertook a review of child protection in England and published the final report in April 2011, followed by a progress report in May 2012.

Her extensive consultancy work with child protection services in higher-income countries as well as her academic work makes her well qualified to pull together an overview of the issues in child protection.
