From Booklist
To understand the coverage of this work, it is helpful to review the distinction between the two academic fields of study covered: business ethics and business and society. Relying on the methodology of Western philosophical tradition, business ethics specifies the principles under which businesses must operate to behave ethically. Business and society uses the empirical tools of the social sciences to explore the entire range of interactions between business entities and the societies in which they operate. Value questions in commerce are the shared primary concern of each discipline. Thus, the Encyclopedia of Business Ethics and Society covers philosophers, ethical concepts, and economic theories as well as applied ethical issues of social and political relevance such as Corporate accountability, Deceptive advertising, Environmental ethics, Executive compensation, Workplace privacy, and businesses’ myriad interactions with customers and employees. In total, the set addresses nearly 900 topics in signed, alphabetically arranged essays ranging in length from about 500 words (for people and organizations) to almost 11,000 words (for topics such as Corporate citizenship, Property and property rights, and Stakeholder theory). Each entry has see also references and a list of further readings. A “Reader’s Guide” organizes the entries into 22 themes and dimensions, among the largest of which are “Applied Ethics,” “Economics and Business,” and “Legislation and Regulation.” Although there are entries for a number of corporations (e.g., Dow Corning, Enron, Nike, Tyco, and WorldCom), the reader will want to refer to the 142-page index to locate references to other companies. Wal-Mart, for instance, is referenced in more than 10 essays dealing with topics such as predatory pricing, philanthropy, and resistance to unions. The Ford Pinto is discussed in its own entry, while Ford Motor Company is also discussed in entries dealing with paternalism and shareholder activism, among others. An appendix offers a selected guide to the literature, with brief descriptions of relevant academic journals, trade publications, book series, databases, and blogs. This well-written, comprehensive work will be a standard reference source for students, scholars, and practitioners interested in the relationships among business, ethics, and society. Recommended for academic and large public libraries. --Janice Lewis

"Sigford has written a book that would be a good basic administrative resource. It is easy to read and find information. There are handy lists, the information is up-to-date, and the bibliography contains additional resources for further study on the topics presented." (Principal Navigator, January 2007 2007-01-01)

Review
For a comprehensive college-level study of geographic research methods, choose An Introduction to Scientific Research Methods in Geography, which covers the entire research process and describes basic concepts, from generating ideas to using library resources and using ethical judgement in conducting, compiling and presenting research. Plenty of illustration of different geographic research techniques include boxed summaries and spatial examples, which self-tests, assessments, and exercises make for a perfect beginner's coursebook. (CALIFORNIA BOOKWATCH CALIFORNIA BOOKWATCH 2006-05-09)

"I would recommend this book for use as a reference or a text in any undergraduate-or graduate-level course that covers geographic research methods. The final, and perhaps key, strength of this book is that it is written for the entire research community." (Arthur N. Samuel 2007-05-30)

"Dan Montello and Paul Sutton’s well-written book on how to pursue geographic inquiry using the scientific method and related research techniques should become required reading for many present and future geographers. Even researchers who do not traditionally employ the scientific method, or do not necessarily adhere to all of its principles, will find this book a useful addition to their collection. It covers not only topics germane to the breadth of human geography but offers material that all geographers, human and physical alike, will find relevant. My expectation is that while this book will primarily be used for undergraduate courses in research and quantitative methods, graduate students in geography will also find it a useful resource." (Scott Bell 2007-12-03)

About the Author
Daniel Montello is Professor of Geography at the University of California, CA.

I grew up in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles, California (Laurel Canyon) during the 1960's. The movie 'Soylent Green' and the chest pain I experienced with deep breaths during smog alerts had a significant impact on me and my nascent perception of the Human-Environment-Sustainability problematic. I later moved to Santa Barbara during my High School years and was deeply influenced by the works of Rachel Carson, Paul Ehrlich, and Garrett Hardin. Needless to say my early childhood experiences primed me to be significantly influenced by apocalyptic movies and neo-malthusian jeremiads. I spent my undergraduate daze at Union College in Schenectady New York. I began as a naive pre-med but I ended up with a Chemistry degree and a desire to work in the area of environmental cleanup. I soon learned that EPA Superfund sites spend more of the clean up funds on lawyers in three piece suits than on chemists in Hazmat suits. This only seeded my latent cynicism as I volunteered for Zero Population Growth while I taught High School Chemistry, Physics, and Math at the Anacapa School in Santa Barbara. I later did some time as a process engineer at the Santa Barbara Research Center where I participated in the design, fabrication, and testing of infrared sensors for scientific and military equipment including satellite sensors. I discovered Geography through friends that were graduate students in Geography at UCSB in the early 1990s. I milked my time as a graduate student in the Geography Department at UCSB for as long as I could obtaining an M.A. in Geography in 1995, an M.A. in Statistics in 1997, and a PhD in Geography in 1999. My dissertation was titled: "Census from Heaven: Estimation of human population parameters using nighttime satellite imagery and GIS". I am deeply indebted to many faculty at UCSB for their guidance and their service to the discipline. I took a position in the Geography Department at the University of Denver in the Fall of 1999 and have been here since then. I have many interests spanning much of geography but ranging into ecology, economics, and philosophy. Most of my research focuses on applied issues associated with the Human-Environment-Sustainability problematic. I do a great deal of work with nighttime satellite imagery derived from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System (DMSP OLS). Data products derived from DMSP OLS imagery are being used to map and estimate human population distribution, energy consumption, economic activity, urban extent, CO2 emissions, Ecological Footprints, and more. The tools needed to engage in this research are remote sensing , geographic information analysis, and statistics. I also am interested in the development of the discipline of ecological economics. I use my expertise in GIS and spatial data analysis in collaborations with economists and ecologists to make spatially explicit valuations of ecosystem services. Nonetheless my interests are quite broad and I have had students write theses and dissertations in areas ranging from crime mapping to explaining ‘high-stakes’ testing scores in the public schools to mapping invasive species. My fascination with apocalyptic movies has not faded though and I teach a first year seminar titled: Utopia, Dystopia, and the End of the World. I do my small part to insure that 'Soylent Green' remains in the lexicon of the culturally literate. I also teach geographic statistics, population geography, and ecological economics. I try to serve the discipline of Geography primarily by teaching and mentoring students in a way that prepares them to be informed and active citizens, provides them with unique and relevant skills that helps them pursue meaningful careers, and provokes and stimulates their curiosity and intellect in ways that insures that they appreciate that a geographic perspective is essential to a rich intellectual life.

Review
"What is amazing about this text is how it takes some very difficult material (particularly around reliability and validity, z-scores, etc.) and makes it easily understandable by an undergraduate student. Just as in his statistics book, Salkind has a genius for conveying difficult material in everyday language that engages the reader. This is the perfect text for any research methods instructor who has struggled with making testing and measurement concepts both understandable and FUN." -- John Q. Hodges, University of Missouri, Columbia "The distinguishing factor with this book is the illustrative material. The "Tech Talk" boxes are helpful for students to quickly get the grasp of a concept and find it to review later. The new vocabulary in tests and measurements is often an obstacle, and these boxes help tremendously.... If there is a tests and measurements book that can enlighten and entertain, this book is the one." -- Joseph Matthews, Brigham Young University "The author does a wonderful job conveying concepts clearly and with panache. Undergraduate audiences will be able to follow but not be bored. The book has a strong, consistent voice and I really enjoyed this and felt well cared for as a reader. The discussion on reliability and validity, for example, is better integrated and therefore more useful than any methods text I have read.... It's true. I hate tests but I liked this book." -- Christopher P. Bettinger, San Francisco State University "Salkind's book may not make test-taking painless, but it certainly makes learning about tests and measurements less painful. The book is a simple, informative, and easy-to-read introduction to all the basics of what seemed previously to be a difficult subject." -- Denise von Herrmann, The University of Southern Mississippi"

Pretty basic
By JVerkuilen
This book is pretty basic and would be best for undergrads or masters students who have little or no background in statistics but need to know a little something about testing. Salkind's writing style is informal and inviting and thus reassuring for people who "Think they hate" the subject, but it thereby glosses over a lot of details. I teach doctoral level students but have taught this material to advanced undergraduates in the past. Spring 2008 I used it as an supplement to Allen & Yen and my own course notes. It turned out that the ones who I selected this book for (applied nontechnical types such as school psychologists) pretty much knew everything in this book already before starting the class, while the more technically savvy ones could infer it from the main text. For doctoral students, learning the psychometrics "for real" i.e., with equations and real data to work with, is essential. While they don't always like it, it's important if they are going to be building scales or using them in a critical way. (In my view, hiding all the details of a mathematical subject like test theory does the students no favors no matter what their level, but I understand the difference between student levels and demands of different programs.) There is a bit of classical test theory and classical item analysis and a lot of words about various item formats, ranging from constructed response, varieties of multiple choice, to interviews, some of which are quite sensible and others seem strange to me as a psychometrician, e.g., the author's preference for matching items, which must entail a substantial degree of local dependence and for which there is, to my knowledge, no straightforward model-based analysis. The presentation here is rather laundry-list and could benefit from being more systematic, but again, that might be too hard for the target audience. There is also some nice discussion about testing ethics and the like, much of which could be given to students by having them read the relevant APA/AERA standards documents, though of course at the cost of likely boredom on their part.

Review
Criminology has been rather slow to recognise the importance of cyberspace in changing the nature and scope of offending and victimisation, and a comprehensive introductory textbook on cybercrime and its social implications is long overdue. One of the many strengths of Majid Yar's book is that it avoids 'techy' jargon and unites criminological and sociological perspectives in discussions of cybercrime, cyber-deviance and cyber-freedoms. Yar successfully de-mystifies a subject that causes many criminologists to feel out of their depth (or at least their comfort zone). Cybercrime & Society should be the first point of reference for any student of new media and crime.

Dr Yvonne Jewkes, Reader in Criminology, The Open University

An engaging book full of lively discussion and careful explanation of the issues. Majid Yar manages to achieve the seemingly impossible task of balancing theory with action. I shall certainly recommend it to my own cybercrime students.

Professor David S. Wall, Head of University of Leeds Law School, Professor of Criminal Justice and Information Technology

Review
"I found this book well organized and very user friendly. It outlines from beginning to end a process for taking on the issue of school dropout." (Geralynn Olvey, Program Specialist)

"The authors supply insight into areas of early intervention, truancy indicators, and the importance of a student feeling that they belong to their school and their own engagement whether it is by academics, the arts, or extra-curricular activities." (Nancy Avolese, State Coordinator of Alternative Education)

"This book offers educators and families a comprehensive guide and longitudinal plan to implement and evaluate a system to increase graduation rates and decrease dropout rates. We have the road map―now it is time to travel. The authors could not have set out a clearer course in this valuable resource." (Teachers College Record, Vol. 108, No. 1 2007-07-02)
