About the Author
Bruce A. Marlowe
Bruce A. Marlowe earned his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. where he also completed two years of postdoctoral training in neuropsychological assessment. He is the co-author (with Marilyn Page) of Creating and Sustaining the Constructivist Classroom (Corwin Press) and of a 6- part video series entitled, Creating the Constructivist Classroom (The Video of Journal Education). He is also the co-editor (with Alan Canestrari) of Educational Psychology in Context: Readings for Future Teachers. He has taught at the elementary, secondary and University levels and is currently Professor of Educational Psychology and Special Education at Roger Williams University.

Alan Canestrari
Alan S. Canestrari, Ed.D, Boston University, a veteran social studies practitioner and Professor of Education at Roger Williams University, is co-editor (with Bruce Marlowe) of Educational Foundations: An Anthology of Critical Readings (Sage) and Educational Psychology in Context: Readings for Future Teachers (Sage). Educational Foundations was awarded the 2005 American Educational Studies Association Critics Choice Award. Canestrari had a long career in public schools and universities as a history teacher, department chair, adjunct professor at Rhode Island College, and mentor in the Brown University Masters of Teaching Program. He was the RI Social Studies Teacher of the Year in 1992.

Mark Brundrett is a Senior Research Consultant at the Centre for Educational Leadership at the University of Manchester. Neil Burton is currently the MA Education Programme leader at De Montford University, Bedford, where he also teaches on undergraduate and postgraduate initial teacher training courses. He has worked in senior positions in primary and secondary schools, advised on primary science and technology in a large Local Educaiton Authority, and taught on MBA and EdD programmes at various universities.

About the Author
Neil Burton is Partnership Manager and Associate Tutor of education masters courses with the University of Leicester, having worked in teacher education for several universities for the past 20 years. He is a member of the editorial board of Education 3-13 and is a recent past Chair of the Association for the Study of Primary Education. In addition to working with several school-based initial teacher training providers, he also teaches children (6-18 years-old) in schools on a regular basis for the joy of it.

Professor Mark Brundrett is Professor of Educational Research and Director of the Centre for Educational Research and Evaluation Services at Liverpool John Moores University (CERES).

About the Author
 Professor Mike Saks is Research Professor at University Campus Suffolk (UCS), whose partners include the University of Essex and the University of East Anglia which are collaborating in the development of UCS. He studied at the University of Lancaster, University of Kent and the London School of Economics – at the latter of which he obtained a PhD in Sociology – and is a current Fellow of the Institute of Directors. He was formerly Senior Pro Vice Chancellor and Deputy to the Vice Chancellor at the University of Lincoln from 2002 to 2010, which enjoyed a steep rise in profile in this period. Before that he was Dean of the Faculty of Health and Community Studies at De Montfort University, where he was responsible for the education of a growing range of health and social care professions. He achieved a high internationally-rated profile in Politics and International Studies and Social Work and Social Policy & Administration in the 2001 and 2008 national Research Assessment Exercises respectively. He holds Visiting Chairs at the University of Essex and the University of Lincoln.  Professor Saks has published extensively on professions, comparative healthcare and health research. He has also given many keynote presentations and papers at prestigious national/international conferences – as well as organised a number of these. In addition to numerous journal articles and book chapters, his books include: Alternative Medicine in Britain (1992), Professions and the Public Interest (1995), Health Professions and the State in Europe (1995), Professions, Identity and Order in Comparative Perspective (1998), Professional Identities in Transition (1999), Developing Research in Primary Care (2000), Complementary and Alternative Medicine: Challenge and Change (2000), Regulating the Health Professions (2002), Orthodox and Alternative Medicine: Professionalization, Politics and Health Care (2003), Researching Health; Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods (2007 first edition), and Rethinking Professional Governance: International Directions in Healthcare (2008). His latest books with Sage and Routledge respectively are: Researching Health: Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods (2012 second edition) and The Professions, State and the Market: A Comparative Analysis of Healthcare in Britain, the United States and Russia (2014).  Professor Saks has been a member/chair of many NHS committees at all levels – covering areas from the changing healthcare workforce to research and development in primary care. He is currently a member of the Board of Suffolk NHS Primary Care Trust, having previously served on Committees of the East Midlands Strategic Health Authority and as the long term Chair of the East Midlands University Association Health and Social Care Group: He has also acted as an adviser to the NHS at national level. In 2000 he led the team that produced a commissioned report on health support workers for the UK Departments of Health and has subsequently advised the Department of Health and professional bodies such as the General Medical Council and the General Social Care Council on the regulation of health and social care professions. He is the previous Chair of the UK Human Tissue Bank and the Research Council for Complementary Medicine.  Internationally, he has been involved in a number of funded research projects. He was a central participant in an INTAS-funded study of the changing attitudes of physicians in collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences – which surveyed some 600 Russian physicians. He recently collaborated with the University of Toronto on projects on care in the community, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. In addition, he is the current President and Chair of the Board of the International Sociological Association Research Committee on Professional Groups. He is also a member of the Board of the European Sociological Association Research Network on Professions and various International Advisory Boards of health and social science journals – as well as being an Editorial Board member for the Portuguese Journal of Social Science, Sociopedia and Current Sociology monographs. 

In recent years, she has investigated the dynamics of complaints and disputes in health care settings and received funding from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Department of Health and local health authorities. She also carried out a study of the role of patient and carer groups in representing and promoting the interests of people with particular illnesses and conditions. This was funded by the ESRC.

About the Author
John Muncie is Emeritus Professor of Criminology at the Open University, UK. He is the author of Youth and Crime (4th edition, Sage, 2014), and he has published widely on issues in comparative youth justice and children’s rights, including the co-edited companion volumes Youth Crime and Justice and Comparative Youth Justice (Sage, 2006). He has produced numerous Open University texts and readers, including Crime: Local and Global (Willan, 2010), Criminal Justice: Local and Global (Willan, 2010), The Problem of Crime (2nd edition, Sage, 2001), Crime Prevention and Community Safety (Sage, 2001) and Imprisonment: European Perspectives (Harvester, 1991). He has also contributed nine volumes to the The Sage Library of Criminology (Sage, 2007–2009). He is co-editor of the Sage journal Youth Justice: An International Journal.

Shallow Stereotypes Disguised as Cultural Understanding

This book is absolutely ridiculous, and it's a tragedy that it is required reading for programs in psychology. Much of the research is from the `70s and `80s or based on individual opinions. It does nothing to enhance cultural understanding, instead legitimizing incorrect and offensive stereotypes. The book would be hilarious if it wasn't so depressing that future generations of therapists are being trained on its misinformation.

The book has a lot of useful information - if you're reading it, its probably because its required for a graduate class in psychology or counseling.

HOWEVER, the Kindle version has no page numbers.

Plan ahead accordingly for homework because you won't be able to find your way around the book otherwise.

About the Author

Windy Dryden is one of the leading practitioners and trainers in the UK in the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) tradition of psychotherapy. He is best known for his work in Rational-Emotive Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (RECBT), a leading CBT approach.  He has been working in the field of counselling and psychotherapy since 1975 and was one of the first people in Britain to be trained in CBT.

He has published over 200 books and has trained therapists all over the world, in as diverse places as the UK, the USA, South Africa, Turkey and Israel.

He is Emeritus Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London.

About the Author
Donald J. Treffinger is director of the Center for Creative Learning in Sarasota, Florida, and editor-in-chief of Parenting for High Potential, NAGC’s quarterly magazine for parents. He has previously served as a member of the faculty at Buffalo State University College, the University of Kansas, and Purdue University. He has been actively involved in NAGC for many years and served as a member of the Board of Directors from 1980 to 1984. Treffinger received the NAGC Distinguished Service Award in 1984 and the E. Paul Torrance Creativity Award in 1995. His primary interests are in the areas of creativity and creative problem solving, the levels-of-service approach to programming for talent development, and problem-solving style. He is the author or coauthor of more than 350 publications, including Creativity and Giftedness. His most recent books are Talent Development: The Levels of Service Approach, the three-volume series Thinking with Standards: Preparing for Tomorrow, and Creative Problem Solving: An Introduction.

Sally M. Reis is a professor and the department head of the Educational Psychology Department at the University of Connecticut where she also serves as principal investigator of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented. She was a teacher for 15 years, 11 of which were spent working with gifted students on the elementary, junior high, and high school levels. She has authored more than 130 articles, 9 books, 40 book chapters, and numerous monographs and technical reports.  Her research interests are related to special populations of gifted and tal-ented students, including: students with learning disabilities, gifted females and diverse groups of talented students. She is also interested in extensions of the Schoolwide Enrichment Model for both gifted and talented students and as a way to expand offerings and provide general enrichment to identify talents and potentials in students who have not been previously identified as gifted. She has traveled extensively conducting workshops and providing profes-sional development for school districts on gifted education, enrichment programs, and talent development programs. She is co-author of The Schoolwide Enrichment Model, The Secondary Triad Model, Dilemmas in Talent Development in the Middle Years, and a book published in 1998 about women’s talent development titled Work Left Undone: Choices and Compromises of Talented Females. Sally serves on several editorial boards, including the Gifted Child Quarterly, and is a past president of the National Association for Gifted Children.

selections in book are WAY out of date -so makes no sense why professor wanted it-
to write papers I have to search current ed journals.

Amazon pulls through when Bargain Book Store Fails

This book was required for a grad class so as far as reviewing the literature, it passed on being required. Not much depth to the articles (this is a compilation of articles from other authors). You can also find the articles on the internet, but this makes it easier to have them in a book and the book is reasonably priced.

BUT, the difference in my experience is that I originally ordered the book from a Market Place associate called BargainBookStores (BBS) BBS stated the book was in stock and would ship from South Carolina in 2 days, meeting my deadline. The option for 2 day shipping was on the order form, so I paid extra to get the book faster. I received an "update" 2 days later, saying that the book was (all of a sudden), out of stock when it was in stock when I ordered. My class was starting in a week so I contacted them about the delay. Here is the response I received from their poor customer service:

"We truly apologize. We do not have a 2 day service. (Note: they would not refund the expedited shipping I paid as they do not offer this and I had to contact Amazon.)

We received the order on Tuesday, 3/11/2014. The order is due to ship within two business days, per Amazon. (Note: they blame Amazon for their issues.) However, this is a print on demand item. (Note: They said it was in stock so how does it change to "print on demand"?) Basically, we sold out of our in house copies (Note: BBS contradicts themselves again, as they say they have in house copies but state it is a "print on demand" book.) and placed an order with the publisher to print a brand new copy for you." (Do they really think I believe I am getting an exclusive book printed just for me in just a few days? Would love to see how that publisher actually prints single copies of books on demand!)"

After several rounds of e-mails, I called Amazon. Wow, talk about customer service! Amazon performed by canceling the order to BBS, said they had a copy in stock, would waive shipping fees and expedite it. It was on my doorstep the next morning, a Saturday. Thank you Amazon for taking care of the order problems.
