About the Author

Eileen Munro is Professor of Social Policy at the London School of Economics, London, UK. With a background in both philosophy and social work, her work has focused on the reasoning skills needed to provide an effective child protection service. The work was taken up by many child protection services in several countries but, in working with management and practitioners to improve risk assessment and decision making, she realised that the individual decision maker is strongly influenced by organizational and social factors that also need to be understood in order to reduce error. A powerful framework for doing this is provided by the systems approach to investigating error that was developed in aviation and has been adapted to medicine in the US and UK. Professor Munro then worked with the Social Care Institute for Excellence in the UK to adapt this approach to use in child protection services and it is now being adopted widely in England. At the request of the Secretary of State for Education, she undertook a review of child protection in England and published the final report in April 2011, followed by a progress report in May 2012.

Her extensive consultancy work with child protection services in higher-income countries as well as her academic work makes her well qualified to pull together an overview of the issues in child protection.

About the Author
Joseph S. Renzulli is professor of educational psychology at the University of Connecticut, where he also serves as director of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented. His research has focused on the identification and development of creativity and giftedness in young people and on organizational models and curricular strategies for total school improvement. A focus of his work has been on applying the strategies of gifted education to the improvement of learning for all students. He is a fellow in the American Psychological Association and was a consultant to the White House Task Force on Education of the Gifted and Talented. He was recently designated a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor at the University of Con­necticut. Although he has obtained more than $20 million in research grants, he lists as his proudest professional accomplishments the UConn Mentor Connection program for gifted young students and the summer Confratute program at UConn, which began in 1978 and has served thousands of teachers and administrators from around the world.

Sally M. Reis is a professor and the department head of the Educational Psychology Department at the University of Connecticut where she also serves as principal investigator of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented. She was a teacher for 15 years, 11 of which were spent working with gifted students on the elementary, junior high, and high school levels. She has authored more than 130 articles, 9 books, 40 book chapters, and numerous monographs and technical reports.  Her research interests are related to special populations of gifted and tal-ented students, including: students with learning disabilities, gifted females and diverse groups of talented students. She is also interested in extensions of the Schoolwide Enrichment Model for both gifted and talented students and as a way to expand offerings and provide general enrichment to identify talents and potentials in students who have not been previously identified as gifted. She has traveled extensively conducting workshops and providing profes-sional development for school districts on gifted education, enrichment programs, and talent development programs. She is co-author of The Schoolwide Enrichment Model, The Secondary Triad Model, Dilemmas in Talent Development in the Middle Years, and a book published in 1998 about women’s talent development titled Work Left Undone: Choices and Compromises of Talented Females. Sally serves on several editorial boards, including the Gifted Child Quarterly, and is a past president of the National Association for Gifted Children.

This book is a compilation of the most frequently cited articles on the subject. Unfortunately, the articles are out-of-date. Not a good resource for the money.

Some very interesting views and helpful ideas for GT students. I needed this for teaching a class about identifying GT students. I will be using a lot of what is in here but have had to do a lot of search for extra material to fill the gaps.

About the Author

Chris Beckett qualified as a social worker in the 1980s, and worked in the field for 18 years, first as a social worker and then as a manager, latterly as the manager of a children and families social work team.  Like most social workers who qualified at that time, he started out as a ‘generic’ social worker, working with a range of service users including children and families, old people, and people with mental health problems and disabilities, but his predominant area of work was always with children and families.

He moved into academic social work in 2000, working first at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge and then at the University of East Anglia in Norwich.  In addition to his social work text books, he has published academic articles on a variety of topics including the use of military language in social work, the importance of realism as an ethical principle, and statistics from Sweden about child abuse, following the legal ban there on corporal punishment.  His main research area has been decision-making in court proceedings about children, and decision-making about children more generally.

Chris has a parallel career as a writer of literary science fiction, and has achieved some acclaim in this field.  He won the Edge Hill Short Fiction prize for his story collection, The Turing Test, and the Arthur C. Clarke award for his novel Dark Eden.  He now divides his time between his academic career and his fiction writing.   More information about his fiction can be found at www.chris-beckett.com.  His view is that ‘academic’ and ‘creative’ writing have more in common than might at first sight appear: in both cases the author begins with a jumble of ideas that seem to him to be in some way linked together, and attempts, in large part by a combination of intuition and trial and error, to impose some shape and structure.

Chris has three adult children, and lives in Cambridge with his wife Maggie and sundry animals.

About the Author

Mark Israel is Winthrop Professor of Law and Criminology in the Faculty of Law at the University of Western Australia. He has a degree in law and postgraduate qualifications in sociology, criminology and education. He has published on research ethics and integrity, higher education and research policy, political exile and migration, criminology and socio-legal studies. His books include South African Political Exile in the United Kingdom (Palgrave Macmillan, 1999), Crime and Justice (Thomson Reuters, 2006 eds with Goldsmith and Daly), and Research Ethics for Social Scientists: Between Ethical Conduct and Regulatory Compliance (Sage, 2006 with Hay).

He has won teaching and research prizes in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, including the Prime Minister’s Award for Australian University Teacher of the Year in 2004. Mark has undertaken consultancy for, among others, the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, Federal and State governments in Australia, as well as the European Research Council, and a range of higher education institutions and professional associations in Australia, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

to all students, professionals or prospective researchers, this book really implied the ethic concepts on doing researches. Details oriented, cases study, and examples. As I will be doing my thesis next year, this book introduced and guided me to be a "better" future researcher. I am so glad that my professor chose this book for us to begin with.

Well-written, highly readable and interesting book that presents an excellent overview of research ethics in a global perspective. It covers both the history and the current state of affairs. Very useful for students of research ethics. One of the rare books that comes from a broad social science perspective.

About the Author

Windy Dryden is one of the leading practitioners and trainers in the UK in the Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) tradition of psychotherapy. He is best known for his work in Rational-Emotive Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (RECBT), a leading CBT approach.  He has been working in the field of counselling and psychotherapy since 1975 and was one of the first people in Britain to be trained in CBT.

He has published over 200 books and has trained therapists all over the world, in as diverse places as the UK, the USA, South Africa, Turkey and Israel.

He is Emeritus Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies at Goldsmiths, University of London.

Appropriate Title

I have not finished this book yet, but it is informative, clearly written and provides a thorough understanding of cognitive behavioral therapy. I purchased this book from The Book Depository. Because I am a "frequent flyer" at Amazon, I sometimes breeze past or overlook info like delivery window, especially if it's something I don't need right away. For those of you who don't live in the UK, you should realize that this particular seller is located in the UK, so shipping is going to take a little longer.

Ronald M. Holmes is Coroner, in the Jefferson County Coroner's office and Professor Emeritus of Justice Administration at the University of Louisville. He is the author of several books, among them Profiling Violent Crimes, Sex Crimes, and Serial Murder. He is also the author of more than 50 articles appearing in scholarly publications. He is Vice President of the National Center for the Study of Unresolved Homicides and has completed more than 500 psychological profiles for police departments across the United States. He received his doctorate from Indiana University.

Good book, as usual

The Holmes' have regularly produced a series of high quality books on serial murder, sex crimes and other criminal justice topics. This latest book adds to their repetoire with an interesting and easy to read book on suicide.

I would say that this book focuses more on the outcome side of suicide...meaning the sociological or investigative side of suicide. The authors do cover material on the psychology of suicide, but I think that the real insights here are investigative. Indeed, one of the highlights of the book are the real suicide notes that are presented throughout the book which offer a lot of insight into the final thoughts of some of the individuals who have committed suicide.

This text would make an excellent text for future investigators of death scenes. Also this would make a good supplemental text to an abnormal psyche course (where I may try it myself next semester). Finally this is a good read for anyone interested in the topic. Highly recommended.

About the Author

A native of Southern California, Dan grew up in a family that struggled to make ends meet. Drawn to the greater cause of making a life different for children trapped by poverty, Dan began teaching in an elementary school district in 1970 and taught most subjects at each grade from kindergarten through 9th in those early years, many in multi-age and looping classroom situations. After completing a Masters degree in school administration, Dan served as a vice principal, principal, central office administrator, small district superintendent, and county office of education associate superintendent – positions primarily held in his native California. Completion of doctoral studies led Dan into service as a researcher, speaker, and professor in schools of education since 1991. Dan has taught educational methods and instructional leadership around the world. He is currently an Associate Professor at Azusa Pacific University’s School of Education and Behavioral Studies. The contents of his writings reveal a bit of his heart for schools and for the lives of the children that are shaped within those school walls.

This book was incredibly vague on some of the models, only giving examples for some. It made it hard for myself and my classmates to understand some of the more progressive teaching models.

The Handbook of Sexuality-Related Measures is the definitive, mammoth book of sex surveys and questionnaires.
This book is a wonderful resource for social scientists and clinicians interested in assessing various aspects of sexuality using quantitative measures. The editors have done an excellent job compiling a wealth of instruments and have reported important information such as the reliability and validity of each measure, as well as copyrights and contact information of the authors/publishers of each measure. An incredibly broad range of areas of study is covered, often with more than one measure for each topic area. Greatly expanded and improved from the previous edition, it's an essential addition to any sexologist's library.

Anyone with a comprehensive understanding of social sciences and anyone who is interested in doing research on human sexuality-this is an excellent tool. This book contains important and valid measures that do NOT in anyway support, condone, or justify sexual deviance like sex with animals or children. The tests in this book aim to measure aspects of sexuality.

It's very hard to find useful measurements that can be used in researching the behavioural sciences, especially in fields where previous research is scant, such as sexual psychology. More books like this need to be made available, as this is a fantastic resource. Includes useful information for various measurements, including reliability and validity as well as the original context in which the measurement was intended.

About the Author
Carolyn M. Callahan received her Ph.D. in the area of Educational Psychology with an emphasis in gifted educa-tion from the University of Connecticut. Since that time she has been on the faculty of the University of Virginia where she has developed the graduate program in gifted education, the Summer and Saturday Program for gifted students, and has been the director of the University of Virginia National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented for the past 12 years. She has done research across a broad range of topics in gifted education including the areas of the identification of gifted students, the evaluation of gifted programs, the development of performance assessments, and gifted program options. In collaboration with the other staff of the University of Virginia program, she has developed and delivered the highly successful annual Summer Institute on Academic Diversity for the past 5 years. Further, she was one of the editors of Aiming for Excellence: Gifted Program Standards, which is now widely used as the framework of criteria against which gifted programs are judged. As part of her work outside the university, Dr. Callahan has worked with over 300 public school districts across nearly every state in the development of program designs, curriculum, and evaluations. Finally, Dr. Callahan has received recognition as Outstanding Faculty Member in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Outstanding Professor of the Curry School of Education, Distinguished Higher Education Alumnae of the University of Connecticut, and was awarded the Distinguished Scholar Award from the National Association for Gifted Children. She is a past president of The Association for the Gifted and the National Association for Gifted Children. She also sits on the editorial boards of Gifted Child Quarterly, Journal for the Education of the Gifted, and Roeper Review. 


Sally M. Reis is a professor and the department head of the Educational Psychology Department at the University of Connecticut where she also serves as principal investigator of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented. She was a teacher for 15 years, 11 of which were spent working with gifted students on the elementary, junior high, and high school levels. She has authored more than 130 articles, 9 books, 40 book chapters, and numerous monographs and technical reports.  Her research interests are related to special populations of gifted and tal-ented students, including: students with learning disabilities, gifted females and diverse groups of talented students. She is also interested in extensions of the Schoolwide Enrichment Model for both gifted and talented students and as a way to expand offerings and provide general enrichment to identify talents and potentials in students who have not been previously identified as gifted. She has traveled extensively conducting workshops and providing profes-sional development for school districts on gifted education, enrichment programs, and talent development programs. She is co-author of The Schoolwide Enrichment Model, The Secondary Triad Model, Dilemmas in Talent Development in the Middle Years, and a book published in 1998 about women’s talent development titled Work Left Undone: Choices and Compromises of Talented Females. Sally serves on several editorial boards, including the Gifted Child Quarterly, and is a past president of the National Association for Gifted Children.

About the Author
Dr. Johanna K. Moisander is Professor of Corporate Communication at Aalto University School of Business, Department of Communication. Her research interests center on cultural and practice-based approaches to management and organization studies and consumer culture theory. At the moment, her empirical research focuses on media convergence and strategic change in the media industry.

I received my Ph.D. from the Aalto University School of Economics in 2004. Since 2005, I have acted as a marketing professor at the University of Lapland. Moreover, I have 10 years of business experience within creative knowledge industries. My research interests center, firstly, on cultural and critical approaches to consumption, marketing and tourism. Drawing upon practice-based approaches, anthropology, cultural studies, feminist studies and semiotics, I have explored topics such as body and gender, service work, knowing, sensing, and weather. Secondly, my research interests center on the development of qualitative research methodologies (ethnographies, focus groups, interviews, projective techniques, narratives). My most recent research project investigates sleep as a social practice in the context of tourism, consumer culture and media-intensive economy. The other recent project is concerned with the role of all the senses in the meaning-making processes of consumer culture and business organizations, moving thereby beyond the visual gaze.
