About the Author

 

Thomas Keenan is currently a Professor in the School of Academic & Liberal Studies, Niagara College in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada.  He is also an adjunct member of the Department of Psychology, Brock University.  He is a developmental psychologist with interests in children’s theory of mind, sarcasm & irony comprehension, and music. 


Subhadra Evans completed her PhD in Developmental Psychology at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. She is currently serving as Associate Professor in the UCLA Pediatric Pain and Palliative Care Program, where she researches the impact of chronic pain on family and social relationships, and the use of mind-body medicine to treat chronic pain. She also teaches courses on Child Development, Health Psychology and Introductory Psychology.

About the Author
Helmut K. Anheier, PhD, is President and Dean at the Hertie School of Governance, and holds a chair of sociology at Heidelberg University. He received his PhD from Yale University in 1986, was a senior researcher at John Hopkins School of Public Policy, Professor of Public Policy and Social Welfare at UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs, and Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics. Professor Anheier founded and directed the Centre for Civil Society at LSE, the Center for Civil Society at UCLA, and the Center for Social Investment at Heidelberg. Before embarking on an academic career, he served as social affairs officer to the United Nations. 

He is author of over 400 publications, and won various international prizes and recognitions for his scholarship. Amongst his recent book publications are Nonprofit Organizations - Theory, Management, Policy (London: Routledge, 2014), A Versatile American Institution: The Changing Ideals and Realities of Philanthropic Foundations with David Hammack (Washington, DC: Brookings, 2013) and The Global Studies Encyclopedia with Mark Juergensmeyer (5 vols, Sage, 2012).  He is the principal academic lead of the Hertie School´s annual Governance Report (Oxford University Press, 2013-), and currently working on projects relating to indicator research, social innovation, and success and failure in philanthropy.

About the Author

Lani Florian is a Professor and Bell Chair of Education at the University of Edinburgh and Visiting Professor of Special Education at the University of Vienna. She is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences (UK). Her research interests include models of provision for meeting the needs of all learners, and inclusive pedagogy. She is co-author of Achievement and Inclusion in Schools, winner of the 2008 NASEN/Times Education Supplement academic book award. She has consulted on special needs education and inclusion for a number of international organisations including Open Society Foundations, UNICEF, and the OECD.

About the Author

Dennis Sparks has been executive director of the 10,000-member National Staff Development Council since 1984. He previously was an independent educational consultant and director of the Northwest Staff Development Center. Sparks has been a teacher, counselor, and co-director of an alternative high school. He completed his doctorate in counseling at the University of Michigan in 1976, and has taught at several universities. He speaks frequently throughout North America on topics such as powerful staff development and effective teaching.

Sparks has authored Designing Powerful Professional Development for Teachers and Principals (NSDC, 2002) and Conversations that Matter (NSDC, 2001), a collection of his JSD interviews since 1991. He is co-author with Stephanie Hirsh of Learning to Lead, Leading to Learn (NSDC, 2000) and A New Vision for Staff Development (ASCD/NSDC, 1997). He also co-authored, with Joan Richardson, What is Staff Development Anyway? (NSDC, 1998).

Sparks’ column appears each month NSDC's newsletter, Results. His interviews with leading educational thinkers also appear in NSDC'sJournal of Staff Development. In addition, his articles have appeared in a variety of publications, including Educational Leadership, Phi Delta Kappan, The American School Board Journal, The Principal, and The School Administrator. Sparks’ interviews and articles are accessible on the NSDC web site at www.nsdc.org/library/authors/sparks.cfm.

About the Author
Delores B. Lindsey, Ph.D., retired as Associate Professor of Education at Cal State San Marcos, San Marcos, CA, but did not retire from the education profession. As a former middle grades and high school teacher, assistant principal, principal, and county office of education administrator, her primary focus is developing culturally proficient leadership practices aimed at closing educational gaps. She helps educational leaders examine their organizations' policies and practices, and their individual beliefs and values about cross-cultural communication. Her message to her audiences focuses on socially just educational practices, culturally proficient leadership practices, and diversity as an asset to be nurtured. Dr. Lindsey offers keynote address and facilitates educators to develop their own inquiry and action research. Her favorite reflective question is: "Are we who we say we are?"

She is also a Training Associate for Cognitive Coachingsm and Adaptive Schoolssm. Delores and husband Randall, her favorite Sage/Corwin author, continue to co-write about the application of the four Tools of Cultural Proficiency. They enjoy working together with school districts to guide school leaders on their journey toward equity and socially just practices for all learners.

Richard S. Martinez Ed. D. serves as an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Azusa Pacific University. In addition to teaching courses in the Department of Foundations and Trans-Disciplinary Studies,Richard has facilitated groups as they address issues arising from diversity and organizational culture. His experiences in education include classroom teaching; school, district, and county office of education administration; professional development design and facilitation; and university teaching in educational leadership. He has facilitated nationally on the art of leadership, culturally proficient environments, and transformative approaches to systems change. Richard is also the co-author of the best selling Corwin Press book Culturally Proficient Coaching: Supporting Educators to Create Equitable Schools.

Randall B. Lindsey is emeritus professor at California State University, Los Angeles and has a practice centered on educational consulting and issues related to equity and access. Prior to higher education faculty roles, he served as a junior and senior high school history teacher, a district office administrator for school desegregation, and executive director of a non-profit corporation. All of his experiences have been in working with diverse populations and his area of study is the behavior of white people in multicultural settings. It is his belief and experience that too often white people are observers of multicultural issues rather than personally involved with them. He works with colleagues to design and implement programs for and with schools, law enforcement agencies, and community-based organizations to provide access and achievement. He and his wife and frequent co-author, Delores, are enjoying this phase of life as grandparents, as educators, and in support of just causes that extend the promises of democracy throughout society in authentic ways.

About the Author
Bonnie Dow (Ph.D., University of Minnesota) is Associate Professor of Speech Communication at the University of Georgia. She is the author of Prime-Time Feminism: Television, Media Culture, and the Women’s Movement Since 1970 (1996). She is former co-editor (with Celeste Condit) of Women’s Studies in Communication and former co-editor (with Celeste Condit) of Critical Studies in Media Communication.  

Julia T. Wood (Ph.D., Pennsylvania State University) is Professor of Communication Studies and Lineberger Distinguished Professor of Humanities at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She teaches and conducts research on personal relationships, intimate partner violence, feminist theory, and the intersections of gender, communication, and culture. She has authored or edited 23 books, including Who Cares?: Women, Care and Culture, and Gendered Lives, now in its 7th edition. In addition, she has published more than 70 articles and book chapters. During her career she has received 12 awards for scholarship and 11 for teaching.

About the Author

Robert D. Ramsey is a lifelong educator who has served as a "leader of leaders" in three award-winning school districts in two different states. His frontline experience includes positions a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, curriculum director, assistant superintendent, acting superintendent, and adjunct professor. Most recently, he has served as associate superintendent in the St. Louis Park (MN) schools, where every school has been designated by the federal government as a National School of Excellence. Ramsey is now working full-time as a freelance writer in Minneapolis.

About the Author

David J. Sharp is an Associate Professor of Managerial Accounting and Control at Richard Ivey School of Business and Director of the Centre for International Business Studies. Before joining the Ivey Business School, Sharp taught at Boston College. He worked for an electrical engineering company and in sales research at a business systems company in his native England prior to teaching business studies for five years in the Middle East. He studied Engineering Science and Economics at Oxford University, and has a Masters degree in Management from the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology. He earned his Ph.D in International Management at the MIT Sloan School in 1987. Dr. Sharp's research interests center around international management accounting and management decision-making issues. Presently, he is interested in cross-cultural differences in risky decision-making, international business ethics, and the role of control systems in promoting moral behavior in organizations. Dr. Sharp has published numerous articles in a variety of well regarded refereed journals including, International Journal of Accounting, Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of International Business Studies, Behavioral Research in Accounting, The Journal of Finance, and Sloan Management Review.

The cover is fake.

The cover is made, not as original. It is totally white papers with a print name of book. Even no real painting. There is a original back hided under the white man-made cover, so weird. Just like a person cut the front cover, so they made a white paper cover! The true cover disappear. I am very disappointed to this product! I feel I buy a fake book, it looks fake. I feel so disappointed to the product.

About the Author
Since I was a small child, I have always been a nurturer, someone who helps others. I patiently listen to their concerns, let them express their feelings, and, when appropriate, help them look at ways to feel better or behave differently. In its simplest form, I think of mentoring as a process of nurturing others. For me, it is using who I am and what I know to foster the personal and professional growth of graduate students. This is what I find most fulfilling about being a professor-the opportunity to develop meaningful individual relationships with my students with the primary goal being their academic and career success and fulfillment.

As I reflected on my almost 29-year tenure as a faculty member at Arizona State University, I realized that I have had the privilege of fostering the development of 50 doctoral graduates, as well as numerous master degree graduates. Currently, I am directing the dissertations of nine students. The students who enter our doctoral program in counseling psychology are amazing. They are unbelievably bright, articulate, and curious, and invariably kind-hearted. To be able to work with them is a privilege. I have never viewed being a teacher and mentor as a task or as "a job." Instead, I believe that these students have been gifts to me. As I have tried to enrich their lives and careers, they have enriched mine both personally and professionally. Mentoring is a reciprocal process, occurring in stages.


Dr. Mary E. Stafford is a faculty member and internship coordinator in the School Psychology Program at University of Houston Clear Lake, where she is an Associate Professor. Dr. Stafford is editor of the International School Psychology Association’s (ISPA) newsletter, the World*Go*Round. She teaches courses in personality assessment, child psychopathology, counseling children, and biological basis of behavior. Her research interests focus on at-risk children (especially, on influences on resilience among youth, on the effects of mobility among school-age children, and on socioeconomic, cultural, and language issues related to children’s achievement and adjustment in schools), on practice issues in schools internationally, and on ethics. Dr. Stafford has a Ph.D. degree in Educational Psychology, with concentration in School Psychology, from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to coming to UHCL in 2005, she was the Training Director in the School Psychology Program in the Division of Psychology in Education at Arizona State University. In her early career, she worked with children in public school and residential treatment center for emotionally handicapped settings as teacher, counselor, diagnostician, and school principal.

This book was required for one of my courses on research design. Unfortunately I didn't find it helpful because it was too basic. In trying so hard to be user-friendly, I think the author dropped lot of the needed detail.

About the Author
After completing the post-graduate program in Child Development and Family Studies at the University of Akron, Barbara Oehlberg was employed by the Family Life Program, Office of Adult Education, Cleveland Public Schools.  She wrote, Parenting for Peaceful Families:  A Resource Guide for Parent Educators, for Ohio’s Governor R. Celeste during that time. Since retirement, Barbara has become an avid reader of neurological research and has become certified as a Child Trauma Consultant by the Institute for Trauma; Loss in Children She serves on their Board of Advisors. She has authored another book on classroom transformation of stress, preschool to grade three. Making it Better:Activities for Children Living in a Stressful World, was published in 1996. Barbara teaches CEU courses for educators through Kent State and Ashland Universities She serves as a consultant for Ohio’s Commission on Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management and provides inservices to Ohio’s schools.
