About the Author
Maurice J. Elias, Ph.D. is Professor, Psychology Department, Rutgers University, Director of the Rutgers Social-Emotional Learning Lab, and Academic Director of The Collaborative Center for Community-Based Research and Service at Rutgers. He is Past President of the Society for Community Research and Action/Division of Community Psychology (27) of APA and has received the SCRA Distinguished Contribution to Practice and Ethnic Minority Mentoring Awards, as well the Joseph E. Zins Memorial Senior Scholar Award for Social-Emotional Learning from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), the John P. McGovern Medal from the American School Health Association, and the Sanford McDonnell Award for Lifetime Achievement in Character Education.

Prof. Elias lectures nationally and internationally to educators and parents about students’ emotional intelligence, school success, and social-emotional and character development. Among Dr. Elias’ numerous books are ASCD’s Promoting Social and Emotional Learning: Guidelines for Educators, the Social Decision Making/Social Problem Solving curricula for grades k-8, the new e-book, Emotionally Intelligent Parenting, and a book for young children: Talking Treasure: Stories to Help Build Emotional Intelligence and Resilience in Young Children (www.researchpress.com, 2012). About the Author
Robert J. Sternberg is Professor of Human Development in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University. He was most recently President and Professor of Psychology and Education at the University of Wyoming. Before that, he was Provost and Senior Vice President at Oklahoma State University as well as Regents Professor of Psychology and Education and George Kaiser Family Foundation Professor of Ethical Leadership. He was previously Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University, where he was also professor of psychology and education. Prior to that, he was IBM Professor of Psychology and Education and Professor of Management at Yale University. Sternberg received his Ph.D. from Stanford and is the recipient of 13 honorary doctorates. In addition, he has won more than two dozen awards for his work. He is a former president of the American Psychological Association and the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences. He is the author of roughly 1,500 books, articles, and book chapters.

Sally M. Reis is a professor and the department head of the Educational Psychology Department at the University of Connecticut where she also serves as principal investigator of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented. She was a teacher for 15 years, 11 of which were spent working with gifted students on the elementary, junior high, and high school levels. She has authored more than 130 articles, 9 books, 40 book chapters, and numerous monographs and technical reports.  Her research interests are related to special populations of gifted and tal-ented students, including: students with learning disabilities, gifted females and diverse groups of talented students. She is also interested in extensions of the Schoolwide Enrichment Model for both gifted and talented students and as a way to expand offerings and provide general enrichment to identify talents and potentials in students who have not been previously identified as gifted. She has traveled extensively conducting workshops and providing profes-sional development for school districts on gifted education, enrichment programs, and talent development programs. She is co-author of The Schoolwide Enrichment Model, The Secondary Triad Model, Dilemmas in Talent Development in the Middle Years, and a book published in 1998 about women’s talent development titled Work Left Undone: Choices and Compromises of Talented Females. Sally serves on several editorial boards, including the Gifted Child Quarterly, and is a past president of the National Association for Gifted Children.

About the Author
John W. Creswell is a Professor of Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He teaches courses on mixed methods research, qualitative inquiry, and general research design. In these three areas, he has authored numerous scholarly journal articles, book chapters and books. He is currently working on his 22nd book (including new editions), and his books are translated into many languages around the world. At Nebraska he founded the Office of Qualitative and Mixed Methods Research and has held the Clifton Endowed Chair. He also co-founded the SAGE journal, the Journal of Mixed Methods Research, and has been a popular speaker on mixed methods and qualitative research in the US and abroad. As an applied research methodologist, he served as an Adjunct Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Michigan and as a consultant for the VA health services research unit in Ann Arbor, Michigan. As a methodologist, he helped to design the methods for a number of successful NIH and NSF projects. He has been a Senior Fulbright Specialist scholar to both South Africa (2008) and Thailand (2012) lecturing on qualitative and mixed methods approaches to research. Recently, he served as a co-leader of a national working group developing “best practices” for mixed methods research at the National Institutes of Health in the US. Essential textbook for qualitative researchers

Plainly written and up to date textbook! I am a doctoral student who is also teaching at the master's level. This book not only helps me understand my options for research but has helped me clarify the subtle distinctions between approaches to qualitative research.

With examples and ample references, this book should be on every qualitative social sciences researcher's shelf!

much better than I initially thought....

This is a "how-to" book on qualitative analysis. It provides some of the basics but focuses on the more advanced information. It is very well-written, with minimal jargon and plenty of detail. I've been using it a lot recently. This is not the only book to read/have if your focus is qualitative analysis, but it is a very good one to have at hand for detailed practical knowledge.

About the Author

Matthew Lippman is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago and has taught criminal law and criminal procedure in the Department of Criminology, Law and Justice  for more than thirty years. He has also taught courses on civil liberties, law and society, and terrorism and teaches international criminal law at John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He earned a doctorate in Political Science from Northwestern University, a Master of Law from Harvard Law School, and is a member of the Pennsylvania Bar. He has been voted by the graduating seniors at UIC to receive the Silver Circle Award for outstanding teaching on six separate occasions and has also received the UIC Flame Award from the University of Illinois Alumni Association, as well as the Excellence in Teaching Award, Teaching Recognition (Portfolio) Award, and Honors College Fellow of the Year Award. The university chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the criminal justice honors society, named him “criminal justice professor of the year” on three occasions.  In 2008, he was recognized as College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Master Teacher.  He was honored by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which named him Commencement Marshal at the May 2012 graduation.  Professor Lippman  is also recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers.

 

Professor Lippman is author of one hundred articles and author or co-author of two books. These publications focus on criminal law and criminal procedure, international human rights, and comparative law. He also is author of five other Sage volumes, Contemporary Criminal Law Concepts, Cases, and Controversies (4th ed. 2016) Criminal Procedure (3nd ed. 2017),  Essential Criminal Law (2nd ed. 2017),  Law and Society (2015) and Criminal Evidence (2016).  His work is cited in hundreds of academic publications and by domestic and international courts and organizations. He has also served on legal teams appearing before the International Court of Justice in the Hague, has testified as an expert witness on international law before numerous state and federal courts, and has consulted with both private organizations and branches of the U.S. government. Professor Lippman regularly appears as a radio and television commentator and is frequently quoted in leading newspapers. He served in every major administrative position in the  Department of Criminology, Law and Justice including Department Head and Director of Undergraduate Studies and Director of Graduate Studies.

Contemporary Criminal Law Textbook

I was skeptical when I first saw the price of this book, and the fact that the seller did not have a rating; thinking the book must be maked up and in rough shape, but when I recieved the book I was AMAZED! It was in perfect condition, other than on corner having a (very)little damage. The pages were pristine, no marks whatsoever. It was delivered on the day it was supposed to and the seller responded promptly to an email concerning this purchase.

A Good School Book

If you're looking at this book for casual reading I would advise you to keep looking, but this is a pretty good book for class. I'm currently using it in my criminal law (CJA 354) class as the required reading. With the class, we read chapters according to the syllabus, but without the class this would be a hefty read as there are almost 600 pages of reading material.

This is a book I'll be taking with me to law school as it does contain some pretty helpful material and it is well written. The author lists cases and then discusses those cases, but the main focus of the book are many concepts to law. For example, the book goes into great detail about constitutional limitations, actus rea (criminal acts) and mens rea (criminal intent), justification and defense excuses, crimes against public order and morality, etc.

One thing that I'm not crazy about is that there is a section in Appendix A that discusses what needs to go into a court citation (e.g. Jones v. United States, 308 F.2D), but it does not go into great detail and is actually kind of vague. I'm a visual guy and it would have been nice if a visual example and breakdown were included, but I guess that's where the internet comes in handy.

Buy this book used and you'll save a bundle of cash. I did and my book looks brand new. One thing I will say, though, that the seller forgot to highlight, this is not the latest edition of this book and will most likely not match up with your school's syllabus (depending on which version your school's using). This is the 2006 version and my school is using the 2010 version, so buyer beware when making your purchase.

About the Author
Professor Adam Tickell is Vice Principal (Research, Enterprise and Communications) and an economic geographer. His research interests span political and economic geography, and he is particularly interested in questions of political devolution, regulation, markets and money.

I seek to develop general explanations for the spatial organization and dynamics of economic activities in capitalist societies, and to determine how a geographical perspective illuminates such explanations. Economists recently have rediscovered economic geography as a place to apply economic theory, but my research shows that a proper incorporation of the spatial dimension of society challenges much of what economic theory tells us. A geographical approach can capture the complex evolution of economic landscapes and the various non-economic processes affecting economic change. Geography has basic theoretical contributions to make to knowledge, not just empirical elaborations. I am interested in how geographers think about the world, and the changing philosophical and methodological disputes in geography. Good scholarship in geography must be grounded in an understanding of these issues, requiring familiarity with contemporary debates in philosophy and methodology outside geography. I examine the geography of development at scales ranging from the global to the local. Development possibilities don't just depend on local (site) conditions; the interdependencies between places are just as important. The ability of local actors and institutions to effectuate change must be evaluated in this context, to avoid erroneously blaming local conditions and actions for local underdevelopment. I am concerned with human welfare and inequality; with how socio-spatial positionality shapes the conditions of possibility of livelihood practices. Underlying much of my research is a concern for the persistent and too often expanding social and geographic inequalities in society, for the processes creating these, and for what can be done to create more equitable societies and a greater respect for the non-human world. I have spent considerable effort promoting radical geography, where this theme is of central importance. I have always been interested in the economic interdependencies between places (trade, investment, technology diffusion, information and migration flows). While a graduate student, I took up radical political economy as an approach to economic geography, co-authoring The Capitalist Space Economy with my first doctoral student, Trevor Barnes. I remain fascinated by the geographical dynamics of economic change at different scales, and how these are shaped by the rapidly globalizing capitalist world economy we live in. Currently, I am examining the role of trade, and free trade discourses in shaping global change, since Britain adopted free trade in 1846. I have also long been interested in the evolution of geography as a discipline, its contested modes of inquiry, and its position as an academic discipline. For example, I co-authored a National Research Council study titled Rediscovering Geography, and co-edited a book of essays on scale across the discipline: Scale and Geographic Inquiry. I have closely explored and tracked the evolution of economic geography, and its contentious relationship with mainstream and heterodox Economics, co-editing A Companion to Economic Geography, Reading Economic Geography, and Politics and Practice in Economic Geography. I study the two-way relationship between the development of geographic information technologies and social change. I have put much effort into promoting scholarship that transcends pre-existing divides between the geographic information systems and critical geography communities, catalyzing a new generation of scholars finding innovative ways to put these approaches into conversation with one another. Finally, I have long been interested in the evolution of urban life, particularly the intersections between economic processes and urban politics. Cities must be understood not only as distinctive kinds of places, but as places that are penetrated by co-evolving with nature, larger scale processes and one another. Current research examines the emergence, in and beyond cities, of contestations that call into question the generality and influence of neoliberalism, recently co-editing Contesting Neoliberalism: Urban Frontiers.

Jamie Peck is Canada Research Chair in Urban & Regional Political Economy and Professor of Geography at the University of British Columbia

Barnes received his Ph.D. in 1983 at University of Minnesota with a thesis about The Geography of Value, Production, and Distribution: Theoretical Economic Geography after Sraffa (supervisor: Eric Sheppard). He began his career as a spatial scientist. In recent years his interest has moved to the history of economic geography. His current projects concern: the history of geography’s quantitative revolution; epistemological pluralism in economic geography; the institutional analysis of forestry (together with Roger Hayter and the SSHRC); and creative industries.[1]

About the Author

Eric W. Rothenbuhler is Professor of Communication at Texas A&M University.  He was previously Director of Graduate Media Studies at New School University (2001-04) and on the faculty of Communication Studies at the University of Iowa (1985-2001).  At Iowa he was an affiliated faculty member with American Studies and faculty advisor to the student radio station, KRUI, 89.7 FM, where he also had a weekly radio show on the history of rhythm and blues.  He earned his doctorate at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California in 1985 and the BA and MA from Ohio State University.  He has been a visiting faculty member at the University of Kansas (twice), Scholar in Residence at the Center for Advanced Study in Telecommunication at Ohio State University, and has participated in doctoral workshops and teaching seminars at the Universities of Dortmund, Ljubljana, and Oslo.

Rothenbuhler’s research and teaching address communication systems, ranging from ritual through community to media industries.  His dissertation research on the living room celebration of the 1984 Olympic Games provided the first statistically representative evidence for television audience behavior and attitudes consistent with the theory of media events.  This work was published in Journal of Communication, Critical Studies in Mass Communication, and other outlets.  His work on decision-making processes and industrial market structures in the radio and music businesses, in a series of articles beginning in 1982 in Journal of Communication, Communication Research, Media, Culture, and Society, and several books, is also widely cited.  This work continues with research on American radio in the 1950s in collaboration with Tom McCourt, including an article in The Radio Journal and a forthcoming book manuscript.  His essay “Symbolic disorder and repair after witnessing 9/11” is being translated and published in France, as was an earlier essay with John Peters, “The reality of construction.”  Part of his work on the posthumous career and reputation of the American blues musician Robert Johnson is forthcoming in a book chapter called “The strange career of Robert Johnson’s records.”

Rothenbuhler is the author of Ritual communication:  From everyday conversation to mediated ceremony (1988, Sage), which has been translated to Polish (2004), and co-editor (with Greg Shepherd) of Communication and Community (2001, LEA).  He was Review and Criticism Editor for the Journal of Communication (1997-99) and author or co-author of over 50 articles, chapters, essays, or reviews on media, ritual, community, media industries, popular music, and communication theory.

 

Mihai Coman Born in Fagaras, Romania, in 1953, Mihai Coman has graduated from the College of Letters within the University of Bucharest (1976), and holds a PhD in Letters (1985). He was teacher in a Romanian high school (1976-1982), journalist (1982-1989) and publisher (1989-1990). He was the first Dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication Studies within the University of Bucharest, and the first coordinator of doctoral studies in communications. Mihai Coman is considered to be the founder of journalism and communication education in Romania. Until 1989 he had specialized in cultural anthropology studies on Romanian folklore. He has published four volumes of mythology studies (The Sources of Myth – 1980, The Sister of Sun – 1983, Mythos and Epos – 1985, The Point and the Spiral – 1992) and a vast synthesis on animal mythology (Bestiarul mitologic roman, 1986, 1988, second edition published in 1996). Other mythology studies have appeared in scientific journals L’Ethnologie francaise, Etudes indo-europeennes, Kurier. After 1989 he published the reference volume Introducere in sistemul mass media and has coordinated the two volumes of Manual de jurnalism, a book which sold more than 20,000 copies. In this period he has started to elaborate the theoretical and analytical framework of mass media anthropology through studies published in scientific journals such as the francophone Reseaux, MediaPouvoirs, Communication, or in collections such as Roger Tessier (ed), La transition en Roumanie – communication et qualite de la vie, Montreal, Presse de l’Universite du Quebec, 1995,  J. M. Pomorskiego, Z. Bajki (ed), Valeriana, Essays on Human Communication, in honour of Valery Pissarek, Krakow, 1996, Bernard Miege, Gaetan Tremblay (ed), 2001 Bogues: globalisme at pluralisme, vol I (TIC et societe), Laval, Les Presses Universitaires du Laval, 2003, INA – Television, memoire et identite nationale, Paris, L’Harmattan, 2003. In 2003, as a synthesis of these investigations, he published with Presses Universitaires de Grenoble the book Pour une anthropologie des medias.

He has also published numerous scientific studies in journals and books dedicated to the transformations in the mass media in post-communist countries (Romänischer Journalismus in einer Übergangspériode, in vol. “Medienlandschaft im Umbruch”, Berlin,Vistas, 1994, The Third Elite, in Ph. Glenn, O. Soltys (ed), “Media'95”, Prague, Charles University Press,1996, Les Journalistes roumains et leur idéologie professionelle, en K. Feigelson, N. be careful with the binding!!

This book is very interesting and was very helpful for my graduate thesis. I want to give it 4 stars HOWEVER the binding is garbage. I've read exactly two articles, and a big chunk of pages have come loose from the binding right in the center.

About the Author
Mike Broussine is an independent Organizational Researcher and Consultant. He provides consultancy and action research for client organisations and his experience lies mostly in public services, especially local government. Current work includes facilitation of action-learning sets for public service leaders and policy evaluation research. Until November 2007 Mike worked full-time at the University of the West of England and was Program Director for the M.Sc. Leadership and Organization of Public Services, a leadership development program that promoted learning across the public, private and voluntary sectors. In parallel with his consultancy work Mike continues his academic role as Visiting Research Fellow at UWE. His main research interests include emotions and power relations in organizations, gender issues, organizational research methods as well as public services management and leadership. Mike's book, Creative Methods in Organizational Research, was published by SAGE in 2008.
