About the Author

Kenneth A. Strike is a professor of cultural foundations of education and of philosophy at Syracuse University. He is also professor emeritus at Cornell University, where he taught from 1971 to 2000, and is former chair of the Department of Education Policy Studies at the University of Maryland. He earned his BA from Wheaton College and his MA and PhD from Northwestern University. He has been a Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Alberta. He is a past president of the Philosophy of Education Society and was elected to the National Academy of Education in 1993. He was a member of the National Research Council Committee on School Finance, Equity, Adequacy, and Productivity from 1996 to 1999.

His principal interests are professional ethics and political philosophy as they apply to matters of educational practice and policy. He is the author of a number of books and well more than a hundred articles. Recent books include The Ethics of Teaching, The Ethics of School Administration, Liberal Justice, and the Marxist Critique of Schooling, and Ethics and College Student Life. Papers of note include “Professionalism, Democracy, and Discursive Communities: Normative Reflections on Restructuring” in the American Education Research Journal, “The Moral Role of Schooling in a Liberal Democratic Society” in the Review of Research in Education, “The Moral Responsibilities of Educators” in Handbook of Research on Teacher Education, “Can Schools Be Communities: The Tension Between Shared Values and Inclusion” in Educational Administration Quarterly, “Freedom of Conscience and Illiberal Socialization: The Congruence Argument” in the Journal of Philosophy of Education, “On the Construction of Public Speech: Pluralism and Public Reason” in Educational Theory, and “Centralized Goal Formation, Citizenship, and Educational Pluralism: Accountability in Liberal Democracies” in Educational Policy.

Professor Strike delivered the 1999 Kohlberg Memorial Lecture at the annual meeting of the Association for Moral Education. The address was published as “Liberalism, Communitarianism, and the Space Between: In Praise of Kindness” in the Journal of Moral Education, and he gave the keynote address at the Great Britain Philosophy of Education Society in 2000. This address was published as “Schools as Communities: Four Metaphors, Three Models, and a Dilemma or Two” in the Journal of Philosophy of Education. He has written on a variety of other topics, including school reform, desegregation, affirmative action, and religious liberty in education. His current work concerns the exploration of the normative aspects of school reform, emphasizing the notion of schools as communities. He is the recipient of a grant from the Spencer Foundation for this work.

Professor Strike lives in Thendara, New York, a small village in the Adirondack Mountains, in a house on the shore of the Moose River on which he regularly canoes, kayaks, and only occasionally bothers the fish.

a must read

This was required reading for a graduate course in ed leadership at the University of South Florida. It begins by posing a hypothetical ethical dilemma one might face as a school leader and then expands the issue throughout the following chapters. Strike adds layer upon layer to the original dilemma and engages the reader in deep thought around the complexity of decision making concerning curriculum and programming.

The book’s ideas are a useful counterpoint to some of the daft notions of macho leadership and management being peddled in education and indeed the public sector more widely. Woods’ book has the merits that, though radical, it seeks to base its recommendations in the real world and to argue that there are possibilities for change that can bring about real improvements in everyone’s experience and outcomes. Matching the rhetoric of democracy with reality – or at least making them closer – might also improve the quality of our political process, and hence increase interest and reduce cynicism about politics, something which surely should be welcomed. Woods’ agenda is significant and his book certainly worth reading' - ESCalate

About the Author
Bill is currently the Director of Training for Focus on Solutions, an independent training agency specialising in using the Solution-Focused approach. He has introduced many thousands of people to SFT through his lecturing and training courses.

His background is in social work, youth work, lecturing, counselling and management. Bill designed and led the first Masters degree in Solution-Focused Therapy offered by the University of Birmingham.

Bill is a Fellow and Senior Accredited Counsellor of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy.

He is the author of Solution-Focused Therapy (1998 / second edition 2005); Solution-Focused Stress Counselling (2001) and co-editor of The Handbook of Solution-Focused Therapy (2003). Bill has contributed numerous book chapters and journal articles on the Solution-Focused approach.

When he's not working he loves the company of his grandchildren, is a keen, but not very good golfer and a life long supporter of Glasgow Celtic.

About the Author
Allan G. Harrison is Associate Professor of Science Education at Central Queensland University. Allan taught biology, chemistry and physics to students in Grades 7-12 for 25 years before completing his MSc and PhD at Curtin University of Technology in Perth, Western Australia. He has taught science teachers for 10 years and has researched teaching and learning with analogies for 15 years and published articles on science analogies in all leading science education journals. Allan also studies the capacity of analogies to engender conceptual change. He brings to this book his personal practical experience in teaching with analogies in high school and his research on other teachers’ use of analogies. He believes that analogies, when used well, enhance students’ interest and knowledge in science. He hopes you will share with him his commitment to learning for understanding.

Richard K. Coll is associate professor of science education at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Richard holds a PhD in chemistry from Canterbury University and an EdD in science education from Curtin University of Technology. His research interests are concerned with mental models of science concepts, and a variety of aspects of work-integrated learning.

Good ideas, not all are effective

I like many of the analogies given in the book. Some are old standby's (such as the use of water for electricity) and others are new and fresh. There are detailed descriptions of the use and also the limitations.
One example (using M&M's to describe the use of electrity in a circuit) would just feed into misconceptions that energy is "used up" in the first bulb in a series. Or even that more energy goes to the first bulb.
Solid book and useful. Think through the analogies to see if they are appropriate for your students.

About the Author

Jonathan A. Smith is Professor of Psychology at Birkbeck University of London, UK where he leads the interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) research group. He has written many articles applying IPA to a range of areas in health, clinical and social psychology. He is co- author (with Paul Flowers and Michael Larkin) of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis: Theory, Method and Research (Sage, 2009). He also has a wider interest in qualitative psychology generally and has co-edited a number of books in the area.

Finally a comprehensive IPA text

For the last three years I have cruised the web and multiple psychology databases attemptng to find articles with a phenomenological methodology that would support my dissertation topic. Nothing seemed to address my study. I had a small sample (N=11) of terminally ill patients that I interviewed from terminal diagnosis to their eventual death. I even had after death interviews with family members and hospice personnel. Lots of data but no real way to analyze the data that would support multiple perspectives associated with the experience of dying. Being both a counselor and a family therapist I wanted to approach my study holistically and I needed the right tool. During the last three years more and more qualitative research was conducted using a methodology now known as Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). I went through reams of paper downloading articles attempting to extract the essence of IPA. Soon I found chapters on IPA written in books such as Willig and Rogers' "Qualitative research in Psychology." I was thrilled to learn 2 months ago that a text had actually been written by Smith, Flowers, and Larkin. Being a student I was pretty happy about the price--what value for my dollar. My faculty knew little about the methodology so I bought them a copy too for the department. It is an excellent text for both the novice and the experienced researcher and can support both through the complete research experience. The text unravels the mystery of hermeneutics and phenomenology in ways that entices you to learn more. The authors are great at drawing you into the text. I actually read it from cover to cover the first day I had it. Easy to understand and read, I whole heartedly recommend this text to anyone looking for a different approach to qualitative research.

IPA newbie

As a PhD student in Psychology I found that there was plenty of resources and info available for quantitative techniques and more traditional qualitative methods. After finding that IPA was the most appropriate means of analyses for one of my studies I noticed that the resources available for this method were limited (many helpful articles and book chapters exist - they just weren't all in one place). This book puts all of the pieces together: providing a brief and understandable picture of the philosophical roots of phenomenology; giving directions on how to go about research and analysis step by step; and offering examples of IPA studies that illustrate the various approaches researchers have taken and ideas about writing up.

I recommend this book to everyone using IPA and also those who study qualitative methods - most of the IPA research going on is based in the UK and it would be nice to see it spread here to the States.

The best articulation of IPA yet

I am a doctoral student in occupational therapy using IPA as the method to study the lived experiences of older mothers who live with their adult sons who have intellectual disabilities. I initially found IPA as I was looking for a phenomenological approach to my topic. This book is enormously useful as it clearly articulates the theoretical/philosophical underpinnings of IPA (yes, phenomenology and hermeneutics can be understood and used in research!). In addition, it outlines a methodological approach to IPA without being too formulaic or rigid. Certainly some of the contents will be familiar to those who have read as much about IPA as they can get their hands on (like me) but having it all in one place is fabulously helpful. The timing of publication of this book was perfect for me.

About the Author
Renate Nummela Caine is a principal of Caine Learning LLC and consultant to districts, schools, teachers, administrators, and communities to implement brain-based learning. She is the senior author, with Geoffrey Caine, of the groundbreaking Making Connections: Teaching and the Human Brain. She has worked with countless educators in the U.S. and around the globe. Recently, Renate and Geoffrey Caine worked with a low-income, underachieving K-5 elementary school in California to help teachers design more innovative teaching strategies using the brain/mind learning principles and district standards.

Caine is professor emeritus of education at California State University in San Bernardino, where she was also executive director of the Center for Research in Integrative Learning and Teaching. She has taught every level from kindergarten to university. She earned her PhD from the University of Florida in educational psychology.

Geoffrey Caine, a director of Caine Learning LLC, is a learning consultant and process coach. Caine has been published extensively and is co-author of six books, including Making Connections: Teaching and the Human Brain. His work carries him throughout the United States and abroad. He works in the worlds of education, business, and government, where he capitalizes on his prior experiences as a professor of law, an education services manager of a national software company, a state manager of a national publishing company, and national director of the Mind/Brain Network of the American Society for Training and Development.   

He has given keynote addresses or made presentations to the Campaign for Learning in the United Kingdom, the World Conference on Education for All, the Eighth International Conference on Thinking, the Whole Schools Institute sponsored by the Mississippi Arts Commission, and numerous other national and regional organizations and associations. Caine's major interest is in how best to improve the ways in which people learn together. He directs his attention to the arts of deep listening, dwelling in the question, and processing experience for the lessons it has to offer.

Carol Lynn McClintic is an educational leader with diverse experience as a teacher at numerous levels, including preschool, elementary, middle, high, and university. She is a master teacher (over eighteen student teachers, plus BITSA and peer coach), a mentor teacher, and a model teacher. She has led and co-led many workshops for her district, taught numerous education extension classes for teachers at local universities―including co-creating a certificate program for conflict resolution―been a coordinator for university and district grant programs, and consulted with Caine Learning since 1995, participating in workshops throughout the United States.

McClintic has co-authored the book Wouldn’t It Be Wonderful: A Guide to Teaching in the Twenty-first Century and co-written an article with Geoffrey and Renate Nummela Caine. She has received several awards and retired from active teaching in 2002 after thirty-five years.



Karl Klimek is the Executive Orchestrator of the Square One Education Network, a nonprofit organization that incorporates brain/mind learning theory and practices in schools, with special focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics projects (www.squareonenetwork.org). He is lead author of Generative Leadership: Shaping New Futures for Today’s Schools (2008, Corwin Press), co-author of 12 Brain-Mind Learning Principles in Action: Developing Executive Functions of the Human Brain (2004 / 2008, Corwin Press) and has taught in Washington, Wyoming, and Michigan at both the public school and university levels. His school administrative experience includes service as a principal and as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in a suburban Detroit, Michigan district. Karl is President of 2 Perspectives: Learning Through Leadership (www.2perspectives.us.com) and has worked extensively in career and technology education developing state and federal programs. He is a Senior Associate of the Caine Learning Institute, Idyllwild, CA and is Board Vice President of the Natural Learning Research Institute. Karl received his undergraduate degree in education from Central Washington University and his master’s in educational leadership from Eastern Michigan University. He is recognized for his practical and enthusiastic presentations as a speaker and project development/design facilitator.

Cutting-edge mind/brain information

Caine, Caine, and friends have succeeded again, with their new, effectively written book about brain/mind principles. Their earlier book, "Making Connections," is a primer about how the brain learns best. In this new book the authors delineate each of the 12 learning principles in a way that any teacher can use and benefit from. I recommend this book highly as an addition to professional libraries at every educational level.

About the Author
Garrett J. McAuliffe is University Professor of Counselor Education at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. His work focuses on culture, constructivism, counselor education, and career. He received his doctorate in counseling from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and his master's degree at the University of Albany. He has written or co-written six books on topics ranging from workiing with troubled youth to culturally alert counseling. He has created models for cultural de-centering and health-oriented client assessment. He received his bachelor's degree in literature from Queens College in New York City. He spent thirteen years as a community college and university counselor. Previous to that, he was a public school teacher in New York.

Wrong Edition - My Own Fault

Great book, but through no fault of the seller, I bought the wrong edition. Buyers, please note that when following links within Amazon, they may direct you from the edition you WANTED to a previous edition when clicking links... double-check the edition before buying!

Also check that the seller accepts exchanges or returns and what their restocking policy is before making your purchase.

All that aside, the book is well-written and has great case studies.

This book is great. I use it in my graduate school class. One of my students had an issue with what he felt was the author's liberal agenda, but the rest of the class found it very comprehensive. I will be using it again this spring.

About the Author

Nigel King is Professor in Applied Psychology and Director of the Centre for Applied Psychological Research at the University of Huddersfield, UK.  He has a long standing interest in the use of qualitative methods in ‘real world’ research.  With a background in both organizational and health psychology, his research interests include professional identities and interprofessional relations in health and social care.  He is author with Christine Horrocks of “Interviews in Qualitative Research” (Sage, 2010) and with Neil Anderson of “Managing Innovation and Change: A Critical Guide for Organizations” (Thomson Learning, 2002). Nigel is well-known for his work on Template Analysis and, more recently, the development of a visual interview technique known as ‘Pictor’.
