About the Author

John E. (Jack) Hunter (1939--2002) was a professor in the Department of Psychology at Michigan State University. He received his Ph.D. in quantitative psychology from the University of Illinois. Jack coauthored four books and authored or coauthored over 200 articles and book chapters on a wide variety of methodological topics, including confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis, measurement theory and methods, statistics, and research methods. He also published numerous research articles on such substantive topics as intelligence, attitude change, the relationship between attitudes and behavior, validity generalization, differential validity/selection fairness, and selection utility. Much of his research on attitudes was in the field of communications, and the American Communications Association named a research award in his honor. Professor Hunter received the Distinguished Scientific Award for Contributions to Applied Psychology from the American Psychological Association (APA) (jointly with Frank Schmidt) and the Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award from the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology (SIOP) (also jointly with Frank Schmidt). He was a Fellow of APA, APS, and SIOP, and was a past president of the Midwestern Society for Multivariate Experimental Psychology. For the story of Jack’s life, see Schmidt (2003).



Frank L. Schmidt is the Gary F. Fethke Leadership Professor Emeritus in the Department of Management and Organization in the Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa. He received his Ph.D. in industrial/organizational psychology from Purdue University and has been on the faculties of Michigan State and George Washington Universities. He has authored or coauthored seven books and nearly 200 articles and book chapters on measurement, statistics, research methods, individual differences, and personnel selection. He headed a research program in the U.S. Office of Personnel Management in Washington, D.C., for 11 years, during which time he published numerous research studies in personnel psychology, primarily with John Hunter. Their research on the generalizability of employment selection method validities led to the development of the meta-analysis methods presented in this book. Professor Schmidt has received the Distinguished Scientific Award for Contributions to Applied Psychology from the American Psychological Association (APA) (jointly with John Hunter) and the Distinguished Scientific Contributions Award from the Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology (SIOP) (also jointly with John Hunter). He has also received the Ingram Olkin Award and the Frederick Mosteller Award, both for contributions to meta-analysis methodology; the Scientific Award for Applications of Psychology from the Association for Psychological Science (APS); the Gold Medal Lifetime Achievement award from the APA Foundation; the Distinguished Career Award for Contributions to Human Resources, and the Distinguished Career Achievement Award for Contributions to Research Methods, both from the Academy of Management. He is a Fellow of the APA, the Association for Psychological Science, and SIOP, and is past president of Division 5 (Measurement, Statistics, & Evaluation) of the APA.

Okay, so it won’t have you splitting your sides ...

Okay, so it won’t have you splitting your sides laughing, and there isn’t much in the way of character development, but … The bottom line is the book is written clearly enough that, with a little supplementary reading, I was able to teach myself the techniques necessary to run the meta-analysis that formed the core of my master’s thesis. If you don’t need it, there’s absolutely no point in reading the book, but if you do need it, there’s enough detail and background to cope with any and all of the data-handling problems you will come up against.

About the Author
Kenneth W. Wanberg, ThD, PhD, has academic concentrations in biology, mathematics, clinical psychology, psychology of religion, psychometrics, quantitative analysis, and interpersonal communication and the psychology of spoken language. He worked as a counselor and clinical psychologist with the Division of Youth Corrections, State of Colorado for 17 years. He has been doing clinical work for 50 years and has had a private practice for 40 years. He has worked as a clinician and researcher in the field of alcohol and drug abuse for over 40 years and in the field of criminal conduct and substance abuse for over 25 years.

Harvey B. Milkman, PhD received his baccalaureate degree from City College of New York and his doctorate from Michigan State University. He is currently professor of psychology at Metropolitan State College of Denver. His doctoral research was conducted with William Frosch, MD, at Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital in New York City, on the User’s Drug of Choice. From 1980–1981, he completed a sabbatical exploration of addictive behavior in Africa, India, and Southeast Asia; in 1985 he was recipient of a Fulbright-Hays Lectureship award at the National University of Malaysia. He has represented the United States Information Agency as a consultant and featured speaker in Australia, Brazil, Iceland, The Netherlands, Peru, Turkey, and Yugoslavia. He is principle author with Stanley Sunderwirth of “The Chemistry of Craving,” and author of “Better than Dope,” featured articles in Psychology Today, October, 1983 and April, 2001 respectively. From September 1992–June 2002, he was author, principal investigator, and director of Project Self-Discovery: Artistic Alternatives for High-Risk Youth, a national demonstration model funded by The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention and the Edward Byrne Foundation.

Working with Adolescents

I'm a substance abuse counselor who recently took on a Juvenile Drug Court treatment group. I've used Milkman's Strategies book in the past with adults and was thrilled to find this book for use with adolescents. After just a few weeks of using this manual, the group members are already exhibiting considerable improvement in both knowledge and understanding of substance abuse and criminal conduct. Box is messed up!

The box was trashed, it looked as though it fell down some stairs. The bubbles were popped as well. The books themselves appear to be in good shape, I was just surprised with the amout of damage that was done to the books... They are also soon to be out dated which I did not know when I purchased them. I really think that there could have been some better understanding of what you are purchasing and the packagin was awful.

About the Author
Karen Lovaas (Ph.D. in American Studies, University of Hawaii) is Assistant Professor of Speech and Communication Studies at San Francisco State University. Recent publications underscore her interest in sexualities, gender, communication, and pedagogy. The contested terrain of LGBT studies and queer theory, with John Elia and Gust Yep, is in press; it is a follow-up volume to Queer theory and communication: From disciplining queers to queering the discipline(s) (Harrington Park Press, 2003). She authored encyclopedia entries on “gender roles” and “sexism” for The international encyclopedia of [homo] sexualities, education, and cultures (2005), and glossary entries on “cross-dressing,” “free love,” “liberation,” and “sexual assault” for Sexuality: The essential glossary (2004). “A critical appraisal of assimilationist and radical ideologies underlying same-sex marriage in LGBT communities in the United States” (2003), with Yep and Elia, and “Sexual practices, identification, and the paradoxes of identity in the era of AIDS: The case of ‘riding bareback’” (2002), Yep and Alex Pagonis, were published in Journal of Homosexuality. With former undergraduate students Lina Baroudi and S. Collins, Lovaas wrote “Transcending heteronormativity in the classroom: Using queer and critical pedagogies to alleviate trans-anxieties” for the Journal of Lesbian Studies (2002); it was simultaneously published in Addressing homophobia and heterosexism on college campuses (Haworth Press, 2003). “Communication in ‘Asian American’ families with queer members: A relational dialectics perspective,” with Yep and Philip Ho, appears in Queer families, queer politics: Challenging culture and the state (Columbia University Press, 2001). Her ongoing projects utilize critical, queer, and feminist approaches to communication research and pedagogy.

Mercilee Jenkins (Ph. D in Speech Communication, University of Illinois) is a professor in the Department of Speech & Communication Studies at San Francisco State University. Her publications include her solo performance texts, poetry, and scholarly articles on women’s small group communication, the performance of personal narratives, and communication in the college classroom. She was an Associate Editor for Queer Words, Queer Images edited by R. Jeffrey Ringer. Her ethnographic research on gender, sexuality and relationships has resulted in several produced plays, including A Credit to Her Country, based on the oral histories of lesbian in the U. S. military and She Rises Like a Building to the Sky, about the founding of the San Francisco Women's Building. She received two Horizon Foundation grants for Credit and a San Francisco Arts Commission Cultural Equity Grant for the development of She Rises.  Her solo performance piece, Menopause and Desire, premiered at the San Francisco Fringe Festival in September 2002 and was published in its entirety in Text and Performance Quarterly in July 2005. Dr. Jenkins received the Leslie Irene Coger Award for Distinguished Performance from the National Communication Association in 2004.

I bought the book knowing that one of the editors is my professor for the class. The articles in the book address many issues with sexual identity, including history and the personal discovery process. A great read.

About the Author
Jill A. Lindberg retired from Milwaukee Public Schools in June 2003 and is currently a supervising teacher for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her teaching experience includes six years as a mentor teacher, assisting both general and special education teachers in Milwaukee Public Schools. She has taught students with specific learning disabilities, students with emotional/behavior disabilities, and students with hearing impairment.  She has coauthored five books in the Common-Sense Classroom Management series with educators from the Milwaukee area. She has a degree in exceptional education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

I loved this book! For a teacher who likes to be very organized, this is ideal! I took my book to the beach and sat in the sand reading up on how I was going to be more organized in Sept. It worked!!

David Westbrook is a consultant clinical psychologist and Head of Adult Psychology Services for Oxfordshire Mental Healthcare NHS Trust. Helen Kennerley is a consultant clinical psychologist for Oxfordshire Mental Healthcare NHS Trust. Joan Kirk is a consultant clinical psychologist and Director of the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre. All three are founding members of the Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre.

Good but not great

I purchased this book as a textbook as a clinical psychological graduate student. While it did represent a good primer to the principals of CBT, I think, as a student who was learning how to practically deliver therapy, this book wasn't appropriate. Certainly it does a good job of outlining the theoretical basis of CBT and how to perform a CBT formulation with illustrative case examples... I found it lacked in providing specific advice on how to deliver such therapy.

MAYBE this represents a mismatch of this text with such a practical class however it is advertised as a practical guide and it seems to fail in this regard. I've since graduated and I am a practicing clinical psychologist and I can say that there are many better practical guides on how to deliver CBT.

About the Author

Donna Walker Tileston is a veteran teacher and administrator. She is currently the president of Strategic Teaching and Learning, a consulting firm that provides services to schools throughout the United States and worldwide. Donna’s publications include Ten Best Teaching Practices: How Brain Research, Learning Styles, and Standards Define Teaching Competencies (2000), which has been on Corwin's bestseller list since its first year in print, in addition to the ten-volume award-winning series What Every Teacher Should Know, now in its second edition. Other recent titles are Teaching Strategies for Active Learning (2006), Teaching Strategies that Prepare Students for High Stakes Tests (2008), and Closing the Poverty and Culture Gap (2009). In this short book (83 pages), Donna Walker Tileston had distilled the essential elements 10 research-based teaching practices that will transform student achievement. You will learn how to incorporate brain research findings of Eric Jensen and others with learning styles and learning standards to create a framework for teaching any subject area.

Each chapter includes a list of assessment tools and indicators of success. This is very helpful in developing powerful learning lessons and applying the 10 practices in the classroom.

This book is my teaching bible. It is helping me become the teacher my students need and want. Put this one next to Harry Wong's, 1st Days of School, Fay and Funk's, Teaching with Love and Logic. Essential for every new teacher. This is a book you will wear out.

As outlined in the "Reader's Guide," entries cover "Aging and the Brain," "Diseases and Medical Conditions," " Drug-Related Issues," "Mental Health and Psychology," "Nutritional Issues," and "Systems of Care," to name a few. A number of entries cover health and aging in specific countries or regions, among them Canada, Europe, and Mexico. In the introduction, the editor points out that the encyclopedia is aimed at researchers, students, and practitioners and is unique in its focus on health. In comparison with more thorough and academic texts, such as the Encyclopedia of Aging (Springer, 2006), one will find that Encyclopedia of Health and Aging is written in nontechnical terms and contains more international and cultural entries. Entries vary in length from two paragraphs to a few pages. At the conclusion of each entry is a short listing of "Further Readings and References" that, though briefer than those found in more academic texts, contains up-to-date research findings. The appendix provides a listing of 45 annotated online resources on health and aging, most of which are well-known Web sites and not as exhaustive as the National Institute on Aging database. This encyclopedia is suitable for public libraries that are just starting a collection in the area of aging or organizations that want a concise text written in layman's terms. About the Author
Kyriakos S. Markides, Ph.D., is Annie and John Gnitzinger Professor of Aging Studies at the University of Texas Medical Branch.  He is the author or co-author of 210 publications, most of which are in the field of health and aging.  The Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) has recently listed Dr. Markides among the most highly cited scientists in the world.  He has extensive editorial experience including being the founding and current Editor of the Journal of Aging and Health (SAGE).  Dr. Markides has also edited a number of related books, including Minorities, Aging, and Health (SAGE).

David Hesmondhalgh is Professor of Media, Music and Culture in the School of Media and Communication at the University of Leeds. He is the author (with Kate Oakley, David Lee and Melissa Nisbett) of Culture, Economy and Politics: the Case of New Labour (Palgrave, 2015), Why Music Matters (Wiley-Blackwell, 2013), Creative Labour: Media Work in Three Cultural Industries (Routledge, 2011, co-written with Sarah Baker) and The Cultural Industries, now in its third edition (SAGE, 2013). He is also editor or co-editor of seven books and journal special issues, including The Media and Social Theory (with Jason Toynbee, Routledge, 2008) and (with Anamik Saha) a special issue of the journal Popular Communication on “Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Production” (2013).

Very refined analysis, not for those who want a quick, simple, or unrealistic analysis of cultural industries today

I was a bit shocked by the previous review, which says the book is a chore to read and doesn't have any answer to the questions it raises. I think the author offers an answer - cultural industries are extremely complex, and a wide range of social, cultural, and political forces are constantly shaping the cultural industries. His strategy of analysis is to broadly outline some historical trends of cultural industries; but he also adds more complexity in analyzing these trends, warning us not to reify those trends. There is no XXX-determinism in this book. Rather, it calls for more refined analysis of the cultural industries around the world. Many scholars have praised the book, and I don't think they're lying. If one wants to hold on to simplistic approaches like some hard-core versions of the political economy approach, which tend to downplay the complexity of things, s/he should avoid reading this book. But if you believe in Gramsci and the idea that culture (production, text and reception) is always in a state of struggle, this book is for you.

It is a good read! For those interested to know about the cultural industries.. But would have to get the 3rd edition as its the newest edition and have the 20th century elements such as 'digital age' and 'information society' that we know live in.
