About the Author

John Gastil is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Washington, where he specializes in political deliberation and group decision making. Prior to joining the University of Washington in 1998, Gastil received his communication Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1994 and worked for three years at the University of New Mexico Institute for Public Policy.

In 1993, Gastil published Democracy in Small Groups (New Society Publishers), and he continued to explore democracy and deliberation at many levels of analysis in By Popular Demand: Revitalizing Representative Democracy through Deliberative Elections (University of California, 2000), The Deliberative Democracy Handbook: Strategies for Effective Civic Engagement in the Twenty-First Century (co-edited with Peter Levine, Jossey-Bass, 2005), and Political Communication and Deliberation (Sage, 2008).

The National Science Foundation has supported three large-scale research programs in which Gastil has served as a principal investigator. The Jury and Democracy Project rediscovered the jury system as a valuable civic educational institution. Gastil has also contributed to the Cultural Cognition Project, which explores the cultural underpinnings of attitudes toward various public policy issues. Most recently, Gastil has worked with Australian colleagues to study the flow of ideas and arguments through the Citizens’ Parliament held in Canberra in 2009.

Gastil’s scholarly articles from these and other projects have appeared in Adult Education Quarterly, Communication Theory, Harvard Law Review, Human Communication Research, Human Relations, Journal of Applied Social Psychology, Journal of Communication, Journal of Public Deliberation, Political Communication, Small Group Research, and other academic journals.

Deliberation: A Lot More than Just Talk

How is "deliberation" different from debate, dialogue, or just "talk"? And what can we do to improve political communication? The answers are critical to lasting social change. Political Communication and Deliberation is an important communications text, and will also be valuable in any political science, public administration, or other course where deliberative democracy is a focus (may their numbers continue to grow!). But community leaders and democratic practitioners who are interested in exploring a thorough definition of deliberation and how it affects their work will also find Gastil's comprehensive analysis useful.

Gastil applies his deliberative overlay to a wide variety of political scenarios. We examine settings from informal conversations to formal processes such as the National Issues Forum deliberative model, and from the role of deliberation in the media, elections, public meetings, and legislatures, to Gastil's special expertise, the jury.

While the book is academically rigorous, the author's sense of humor and excitement for his subject shines through and saves the discussion from becoming too ponderous. I did find myself wishing that the book had included activities for readers, to help us work with these theories and apply them in their communities. Ideas for experimenting with the theories would be valuable not only to educators but also for community practitioners and those who work with local leaders in workshop settings.

As the modern field of dialogue and deliberation rapidly develops, Gastil's expertise and analysis help form a welcome and invaluable foundation.

About the Author
Dr. Roger L. Sadler is a full professor in the Department of Communication-Broadcasting at Western Illinois University in Macomb.  He has been at W.I.U. since 1990.  Before that, he was an associate instructor at Indiana University and an instructor at the University of Central Oklahoma.   He has a B.A. in Communications/English from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, an M.A. in Journalism from the University of Missouri, and Ph.D. in Mass Communication from Indiana University.       Dr. Sadler has worked in the broadcasting field since 1979 when he got his first on-air job at his hometown radio station in Gouverneur, New York.  Since then, he has worked as a D.J., producer, news reporter, news anchor, and faculty adviser at more than a dozen radio and T.V. stations in New York, Missouri, Oklahoma, Indiana, and Illinois.  Presently, he is a weekend DJ on W.J.E.Q.-F.M. in Macomb, Illinois and works during the summer months as a news reporter for W.Q.A.D.-T.V. in Moline, Illinois.

Cathy A. Enz is Executive Director of The Center for Hospitality Research at Cornell University, and Lewis G. Schaeneman, Jr. Professor of Innovation & Dynamic Management. Her primary research focus is on innovation, best practices and change management; strategic human resource management, including the empowerment of service workers and the development of social partnerships for economic development. Dr. Enz' publications include over 50 articles in Administrative Science Quarterly, the Academy of Management Review, the Hospitality and Tourism Research Journal, the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Administration Quarterly, Human Relations, and others. I had anticipated, from the title and the cover, which looks rather like an old-fashioned, home-made book of recipes (fake handwriting font and fake coffee cup stains on it) more of a practical, how-to-do-it book. About the Author

Bob Garvey is Professor of Business Education at York St John Business School. He works with a range of people, either one-to-one or in groups. He is an EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council) member and formerly the editor of the International Journal of Mentoring and Coaching. Bob is obsessed with coaching and mentoring!



Paul Stokes is a Principal Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University. He is the Director of Coaching & Mentoring Research Unit within Sheffield Business School as well as leading the Organisational Behaviour & Human Resource Management Subject Group within the Department of Management. He is an experienced coach, mentor and supervisor as well as a designer and evaluator of coaching & mentoring programmes within organisations.



David Megginson is Emeritus Professor of HRD at Sheffield Hallam University. He is co-founder of the former EMC (European Mentoring Centre), an Ambassador for the EMCC (European Mentoring and Coaching Council) and the founder of the Coaching and Mentoring Research Unit. David is a dedicated listener, an experienced coachmentor and obsessive runner.

This book is a mess-content speaking!

My classmates and I complained to our professor about this book. Granted the authors are SMEs, the book is all over the place, and they are mostly referencing works by other authors--which make referencing and citing very difficult. They use different fonts as well depending on what they're referencing. Just a mess in my opinion. As a student, you don't have a choice, but I hope this reference lets you at least know what you're in for.

About the Author

Marcia L. Tate, EdD, is the former executive director of professional development for the DeKalb County School System, Decatur, Georgia and has been presenting to adult audiences for more than 25 years. During her 30-year career with the school district, she has been a classroom teacher, reading specialist, language arts coordinator, and staff development executive director. She received the Distinguished Staff Development Award for the State of Georgia, and her department was chosen to receive the Exemplary Program Award for the state.

Marcia is currently an educational consultant and has taught more than 400,000 administrators, teachers, parents, and business and community leaders throughout the world. Marcia Tate's book Reading and Language Arts Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites is a great resource for teachers. The book is easy to read, includes research for each of the five components of reading, and includes several activities for the different learning modalities for each objective. This book is an excellent way for teachers to support student learning.

I'm not big on inservice days or teaching resource books. However, Marcia Tate truly inspired me. There was a not-so-favorable review that stated that she doesn't point out anything original. If nothing is original, why do so few teachers use these practices in their classrooms? I think that this book is not only worth the money, if you can convince your school district to have Ms. Tate come to lead an inservice, I would HIGHLY recommend it!

About the Author
Timothy D. Green holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology and Curriculum and Instruction from Indiana University. He is co-author of Multimedia Projects in the Classroom: A Guide to Development and Evaluation (Corwin Press) and the author of PowerPoint Made Very Easy! (Scholastic). He has taught fourth grade and junior high school.  His expertise is in multimedia design, the integration of technology into the teaching and learning process, and pedagogy. He is an assistant professor at California Sate University, Fullerton in the department of Elementary and Bilingual Education. Currently, he is the university’s Director of Distance Education.

Abbie H. Brown holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Systems Technology from Indiana University and an MA from Teachers College at Columbia University. He is currently an associate professor at California State University, Fullerton in the department of Elementary and Bilingual Education. He is co-author of Multimedia Projects in the Classroom: A Guide to Development and Evaluation (Corwin Press), and a contributing author to Teaching Strategies: A Guide to Effective Instruction (Houghton Mifflin). He has taught at the Bank Street School for Children in New York City and George Washington Middle School in Ridgewood, New Jersey. He has received awards for outstanding teaching and curriculum design from the New Jersey Department of Education and is an experienced computer-based instructional media producer.

LeAnne Robinson is an Assistant Professor at Western Washington University on a joint appointment between the Program in Instructional Technology and Department of Special Education. She is a former elementary and special education teacher and holds a Ph.D. in Education from Washington State University. LeAnne’s work has appeared in such journals as Teaching Exceptional Children, the International Journal of Information and Communication Technology Education, and, Voices in the Middle.

bad service

When I saw the title of this book: "making the most of the web in your classroom", I expect to learn how to design a web to promote my students' learning. However, when the book was delieved to me, it doesn't teach me at all how to make the most of the web in my classroom. I tried to contact the seller, the seller simply ask me to sell the book to someone else. After that, the seller never responds any of my follow up questions....

Utter Disappointment - very superficial treatment of the issues

The title of this book should have been the "Superficial Guide to Making the most of the Web..."
This book promises so much on the cover (blogs, podcasts, wikis) and delivers nearly nothing substantial. Much of the coverage deals with Web 1.0 technology.

It HAS ABOUT ONE PAGE EACH on Podcasts (pg 21 - 22), Blogging (pg. 16 - 17) and Wikis (pg 24 - 25).

It dedicates Chapter 2 to the whole area of teaching students to be responsible and safe on the web and how to search effectively. This is so pre-2000!!! If you are going to write a book at the end of 2007 and boasts Web 2.0 related stuff on your cover (blogs, wikis and podcasts), that should be focus of the book (though I will admit that you did not say Web 2.0 on the cover - but it was certainly implied).

Chapter 3 was SHOCKING. The book ACTUALLY tries to teach you how to hard code HTML pages! I could not believe my eyes! HTML is so so very yesterday. With all the web applications today, who needs to create web pages???

I don't even want to waste my time reading chapter 4.

If there was a way, I want my money back - what a rip off! This was an utterly disappointing book! I would have given NO stars... but that is not an option.

About the Author
Ralph Brody, Ph.D. passed away on February 8, 2006. Dr. Brody was previously on the faculty of Cleveland State University where he taught social policy and human service administration. He also taught graduate courses on human service delivery models at Case Western Reserve University. Previously, he served for fifteen years as the executive director of the Federation for Community Planning, an organization that provides research, planning and advocacy on health and human services. Dr. Brody authored books on case management, the state legislative process, fundraising events, community problem solving, service learning, and macro practice. Dr. Brody’s many years as a manager and teacher convinced him that the issues facing those in human service organizations were universal and applied to boards of directors as well as NGOs. He dedicated himself to developing tools to enhance the understanding and skills of those in leadership roles, from Cleveland to India, Spain, Ghana, Ethiopia, Egypt and Nigeria.  His frequent workshops in Kenya led to the translation of his casebook into the Swahili language. His co-authored book with Dr. Nair: Grassroot Development – Establishing Successful Microenterprises has been published in English and Malayalam language. Dr. Brody’s work touched millions, and his contributions will continue to educate, inform and inspire future students and professionals in human services field.

I wish I'd read this book sooner

This well written and readable text offers all the information I wish I had known before I became a manager of Human Services agencies myself. Now that I am a university teacher in the field, I find this to be the best textbook available for my courses in Human Services Management. Unfortunately, this is probably the last year I will use this text, as it was published in 2005 and is going to be out of date soon. I wish Brody were here to update his book, or that his associates would create a newer edition this year to keep up with the field as laws, regulations and best practices evolve.

Needed this book for my Hums class and upon reviewing the book when it arrived it was easy to read not too dry or boring and very informative. No diagrams/pics in book but still a great text. Will not be selling this back.

About the Author
Dr. Brad Schultz is an Assistant Professor of Journalism at the University of Mississippi, where he teaches Broadcast News and Sports Broadcasting. Before entering academia, he spent 15 years in local television news at different stations around the country. His experience includes anchoring, reporting, producing, writing, editing, photography and management. Schultz has won awards from the Oklahoma Associated Press and the Cleveland Press Club for reporting and producing. His first book, Sports Broadcasting, came out in 2001.
