About the Author

Robert D. Ramsey is a lifelong educator who has served as a "leader of leaders" in three award-winning school districts in two different states. His frontline experience includes positions a teacher, counselor, assistant principal, curriculum director, assistant superintendent, acting superintendent, and adjunct professor. Most recently, he has served as associate superintendent in the St. Louis Park (MN) schools, where every school has been designated by the federal government as a National School of Excellence. Ramsey is now working full-time as a freelance writer in Minneapolis.

Lead, Follow, or Get Out of the Way is an excellent book for school administrators specifically in the area of leadership. It identifies the latest research and trends, as well as practical application in the running of a school. This is a modern guide for the school leader.

Reviewing the school leaders' practices

We have a perceived crisis in education at present, in that it is harder to find high quality school leaders. As professional educators it is our collective role to mentor the next generation of school leaders and ensure that the students of the future get the best possible education. With that in mind I took a look at Bob Ramsey's book- "Lead, follow or get out of the way".

Being a principal is a complex job and I am sceptical of books in the management genre that simplify management to a list of rules and procedures. I was happy to find that Ramsey's book was far better than that. I was buoyed by the common-sense approach that the author has and it is accompanied by an economical and purposeful writing style. I was buoyed too by his observation that apart from authenticity and passion all of the leadership roles are learnable.

Clearly this book has an educative role for the neophyte school leader. It is comprehensively informative. The lists and checklists are very useful and provide a great starting point for discussions about specific aspects of school leadership. If I were mentoring a school leader I would find this a useful text.

A second role for the text is as a reflective tool for the experienced school leaders. None of us is perfect and it is rare to have a "significant other" in the near vicinity with whom reflection is possible. In a vicarious sense, Ramsey's book does this.

What the book does not do, in detail, is address the two key issues of schooling- pedagogic and curriculum leadership. Not withstanding this, the book is a very useful addition to any professional library. This book is my book of choice for our school leaders' reading group.

Corwin Press is to be thanked for producing good quality and topical books for educators, at a reasonable price.

About the Author
Susan has been a journalist for more than 30 years and has worked for regional and national newspapers and magazines, and in regional television. About the Author

DR. MARTINES is an assistant professor in the psychology department at Montclair State University in New Jersey. Previously, she worked for the Board of Education of the City of New York. Dr. Martines has taught at Lehman College, College of New Rochelle, and Fordham University at Lincoln Center.

I am a Higher Education academic working with UK Teachers and Teaching Assistants interested in getting their Qualified Teachers Status (QTS). This book seems like it was written for me personally.

About the Author
Jill A. Lindberg retired from Milwaukee Public Schools in June 2003 and is currently a supervising teacher for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her teaching experience includes six years as a mentor teacher, assisting both general and special education teachers in Milwaukee Public Schools. She has taught students with specific learning disabilities, students with emotional/behavior disabilities, and students with hearing impairment.  She has coauthored five books in the Common-Sense Classroom Management series with educators from the Milwaukee area. She has a degree in exceptional education from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

April M. Swick was assigned to Clement Avenue Elementary School, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in August 1990 and began with a class of combined fourth and fifth graders. She was a highly involved staff member, concerned not only with the success of the children in her classroom but also with the betterment of the entire school population. She belonged to a wide variety of com-mittees and worked to ensure schoolwide discipline, a positive climate, and school spirit. After teaching for several more years, she and her current coauthor and friend, Jill Lindberg, became the first full-inclusion teaching team in the school. In the fall of 2002, April was appointed Principal of Clement Avenue School. She has earned a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin―Milwaukee, and she is pursuing a doctorate in education. Sharing her good ideas with young teachers and colleagues has been an extremely fulfilling experience. In the future, she would love to write and illustrate children’s books.

About the Author
Susan Baum is a professor at the College of New Rochelle where she teaches graduate courses in elementary education and the education of gifted and talented students. She received a B.S. degree in elementary and special education from Syracuse University and an M.A. degree in learning dis-abilities from Montclair State College. She earned a doctorate at the University of Connecticut in the education of gifted and talented. Dr. Baum has had over 30 years’ experience in the public schools as a classroom teacher, special education teacher, teacher of the gifted, learning disabilities specialist, and an educational consultant. Dr. Baum’s professional activities include consulting both nationally and internationally, writing, and researching in many areas of education, including differentiated curriculum and instruction, emotional needs of children, gifted education, gifted learning disabled students, primary-aged gifted youngsters, gifted underachieving students, and economically disadvantaged students. Her publications in these areas include the following books: Creativity 1,2,3; Chi Square, Pie Charts and Me; and To Be Gifted and Learning Disabled: From Identification to Practical Intervention Strategies. She is coeditor and author of sev-eral chapters in a book titled Nurturing the Gifts and Talents of Primary Grade Students and is coauthor of the recent Multiple Intelligences in the Elementary Classroom: Pathways to Thoughtful Practice, in collaboration with Howard Gardner. Her most recent books are titled Toolkit for Teens: A Guide for Helping Adolescents Manage Stress and To be Gifted & Learning Disabled: Strategies for Meeting the Needs of Gifted Students–LD, ADHD, and More (revised edition). Dr. Baum served on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Gifted Students and is past secretary for the organization. In addition, she is past president and founder of the Association for the Education of Gifted Underachieving Students (AEGUS).

Sally M. Reis is a professor and the department head of the Educational Psychology Department at the University of Connecticut where she also serves as principal investigator of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented. She was a teacher for 15 years, 11 of which were spent working with gifted students on the elementary, junior high, and high school levels. She has authored more than 130 articles, 9 books, 40 book chapters, and numerous monographs and technical reports.  Her research interests are related to special populations of gifted and tal-ented students, including: students with learning disabilities, gifted females and diverse groups of talented students. She is also interested in extensions of the Schoolwide Enrichment Model for both gifted and talented students and as a way to expand offerings and provide general enrichment to identify talents and potentials in students who have not been previously identified as gifted. She has traveled extensively conducting workshops and providing profes-sional development for school districts on gifted education, enrichment programs, and talent development programs. She is co-author of The Schoolwide Enrichment Model, The Secondary Triad Model, Dilemmas in Talent Development in the Middle Years, and a book published in 1998 about women’s talent development titled Work Left Undone: Choices and Compromises of Talented Females. Sally serves on several editorial boards, including the Gifted Child Quarterly, and is a past president of the National Association for Gifted Children.

About the Author
I am Professor of Geography and Biostatistics at the University at Buffalo. My research interests are in the area of demography and population change, epidemiology, spatial statistics, and spatial analysis. My current work is focused upon the development of new methods for the quick detection of newly emergent clusters in geographic data (for example, how does one determine as quickly as possible whether there is a new cluster of crime or disease?).

A very good book

This is a very good statistic book. The book provides detailed information about applying statistics in geographical context. The book is easy to read, informative but not too extensive. Enough details are given for each concepts. The examples are extremely helpful in understand the principles of spatial issues. Some ideas in this book are creative and easy to use. It has it value in practise too. If you are interested in doing spatial statistics. This book will be a wonderful start point.

Difficult and Confusing Text

I am using this book in a senior-level research methods course and my classmates and I are all very frustrated with it. It assumes you already know all of the methods, and even though I have a good statistics background, I am having difficulties. It is extremely time-consuming to work through, so expect to spend a very significant amount of time on each chapter. I do not recommend this book for any individual with little or no statistics knowledge, and I caution those who do know statistics.

Frustrating Book

Unless you are proficient in statistics, this book will be very frustrating for students. I have trouble finding adequate explanations and definitions, and I am supposed to know this stuff. Their are numerous editing mistakes which adds to the students frustration, and could someone provide an answer key to the assignments. It reinforces the inability of some to understand how and what students need to learn.

About the Author

William A. Sommers, Ph.D. of Austin, Texas, continues to be a learner, teacher, principal, author, leadership coach, and consultant. Bill has come out of retirement five times to put theory into practice. He was on the Board of Trustees for five years and President for the National Staff Development Council now called Learning Forward.

Dr. Sommers is the former Executive Director for Secondary Curriculum and Professional Learning for Minneapolis Public Schools, and a school administrator for over 30 years. In addition to being an adjunct faculty member at several universities, he has been a program director for an adolescent chemical dependency treatment center and on the board of a halfway house for 20 years.

Bill has co-authored eight books, and co-authored chapters in several other books. In January 2016 Bill and his colleague Skip Olsen launched a website www.learningomnivores.com which includes educational blogs, new rules, and book reviews. Bill is a practitioner who integrates theory into leading and facilitating schools. Dr. Sommers has continued to be a leadership coach for over 25 years to school administrators.
