About the Author
Carlene U. Murphy is founder and executive director of the National WFSG Center and the principal developer of the Whole-Faculty Study Groups® system of professional development. In August 2007, she began her 50th year of work in public schools. She started her teaching career in 1957 as a fourth grade teacher in her hometown of Augusta, GA. The next year she moved to Memphis, TN where she taught for 13 years, returning to Augusta in 1972 and retiring from the district in 1993 as its director of staff development. During her 15 years as the district’s chief staff developer, the district received many accolades, including the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Professional Development from the American Association of School Administrators and Georgia’s Outstanding Staff Development Program Award for two consecutive years. She was awarded the National Staff Development Council’s Contributions to Staff Development Award and served as the National Staff Development Council’s chair of the annual national conference in Atlanta in 1986, president in 1988, and board member from 1984 to 1990. The friendships she formed and cemented during the over thirty years of her close relationship with NSDC were life-changing.

After retiring from the Augusta, Georgia schools, she has worked with schools throughout the United States implementing Whole-Faculty Study Groups. She has written extensively about her work in Educational Leadership and Journal of Staff Development and has written with Dale Lick two other books about the WFSG system: Whole-Faculty Study Groups: Creating Professional Learning Communities That Target Student Learning, Corwin Press, 2005; and The Whole-Faculty Study Groups Fieldbook: Lessons Learned and Best Practices from Classrooms, Districts, and Schools (co-editor), 2007. Another book with Karl Clauset and Dale Lick, Schoolwide Action Research for Professional Learning Communities: Improving Student Learning Through the Whole-Faculty Study Groups Approach (Corwin Press, 2008), focuses on the work of study groups and gives descriptive data from schools implementing WFSG.

She now lives on a small horse farm just outside of Augusta in a four generational home, which includes her husband, Joe, daughter, three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Even with all the activities in such a home, she still finds time to write about her work, correspond with colleagues and read about the latest developments in education.

Dale W. Lick is President and Professor Emeritus at Florida State University, a former President of Georgia Southern University, University of Maine, and Florida State University, and, most recently, a University Professor at Florida State University, where he did research in the Learning Systems Institute and taught and directed doctoral students in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, and worked on educational and organizational projects involving transformational leadership, change creation, learning organizations, distance learning, school improvement, enhanced student performance, educational technology, new learning systems, strategic planning, and visioning.

Art Practice as Research: Inquiry in the Visual Arts, by Graeme Sullivan

Art Practice as Research: Inquiry in the Visual Arts presents a compelling argument that the creative and cultural inquiry undertaken by artists is a form of research. The text explores themes, practices, and contexts of artistic inquiry and positions them within the discourse of research. Author Graeme Sullivan argues that legitimate research goals can be achieved by choosing different methods than those offered by the social sciences. The common denominator in both approaches is the attention given to rigor and systematic inquiry. Artists emphasize the role of the imaginative intellect in creating, criticizing, and constructing knowledge that is not only new but also has the capacity to transform human understanding.

Review
“Sullivan challenges our assumptions about what constitutes research practices and in doing so presents a ground-breaking analysis for visual arts practice as research. This compelling image-text book opens the possibilities for the construction of new forms of knowledge in our increasingly visual world.” (Dipti Desai)

“Sullivan provides a timely and excellent introduction to the emerging field of visual cognition and educational research.” (Pradeep Dhillon)

“In this rich and layered reflection on visual arts practice as research, Graeme Sullivan launches a passionate and convincing case that rewrites the definitions of ‘art’ and ‘research’ as it unapologetically claims for the visual arts the respect and admiration of the academy.” (Jessica Hoffman Davis)

“Art Practice as Research is long overdue. Graeme Sullivan eloquently crafts a methodology text and articulates for contemporary visual artist-researchers how arts practices are, in fact, rich forms of research inquiry.” (Rita L. Irwin)

“Sullivan’s text is an important addition to the literature associated with research, critical inquiry, and arts education. I wish that such a text would have been available at the time that I was working on my dissertation. I will recommend it to my graduate students and colleagues.” (Doug Blandy)

"Sullivan has writen a complex, closely reasoned, and very detailed dargument about a topic that, at first glance, seems superfluous to anyone who has ever had the good fortune to observe serious artists seriously engaged in making their art...  Sullivan has created an excellent, even poetic, excercise in his own endeavor to share his understandings of the creative process." (W.S. Johnson Choice Magazine 2005-06-01)

"I can recommend Sullivan's book for those who want a thorough overview of the field of inquiry in the visual arts. It is well structured and Sullivan presents many examples to illustrate his arguments." (Folkert Haanstra 2007-03-20)

"Art Practice As Research is encyclopedic in depth and scope of material supporting the author's vital thesis, and the vision of studio art as fully acknowledged academic research, may be elusive as the dragonfly." (Patricia M. Hancock 2007-03-20)

"The book eloquently explains research practices found in the art studio and argues that visual art research is grounded in the practices that come from art itself. This profound and visionary book . . . is an essential text for every research student of art and art education in art schools and schools of education." (Susan Paterson 2007-03-20)

I purchased this book for art-based research study. I found no use for it. I read parts of Barone and Eisner's "Arts Based Research" book and that sounded a lot better.

Art based research
By Researcher
The book is more on historical viewpoint of artist based research. The framework still requires a critique method and difficult to avoid the bias of author's idea. The authour should compare to other artist's research in other countries espeically in Western.

A fresh & important contribution to the growing field of multicultural counseling!
By tahtah2001
In honor of the book & its philosophy, I would like to briefly disclose who I am before writing my review.

I am an Asian-American male, bilingual family therapist, looking for new information about multicultural counseling to help develop my counseling theories. Also, I am working on a research paper on multicultural counseling through a Social Constructionist lens. I personally know Dr. Gerald Monk, the editor of this book, because I took some of his classes while in the MFT program at San Diego State University. I am writing this review while knowing that I am influenced by my personal experiences, my ethnicity, gender, professional career, and interest in social constructionism.

I highly recommends this book for those who are seeking a new and fresh perspective on tackling the challenges in counseling the culturally diverse.
I gave this book 5 stars because of the following reasons:

1) I really enjoy reading it. The book is well-written, has many short stories and exercises to practice and understanding the materials it presents.
2) It provides me with very important insight for my work, particularly a fresh look at "cultural competency" and the use of "discourse" in multicultural counseling.
3) It goes beyond the traditional ways of seeing and explaining culture, which I think are very practical for personal and professional understandings of "culture."
4) Finally, a book on postmodern approaches to multicultural counseling!

Great Book!
By Adonai23
This is the best book I read about multicultural counseling. It goes far beyond the narrow and essentialist thinking that underlies much of the literature in this field and elegantly translates postmodern ideas into practice.

Thought provoking and essential
By David Polniak
This book gives voice to the often covert workings of ethnic and cultural differences. It offers a view more realistic and complex than the "cookie cutter" ideas on how to work with clients from specific cultural backgrounds, and instead shows how there are often a competition of such discourses within each individual client. I'd recommend every counselor, educator, and caregiver read this book to better serve their clients. It brings to light what is so often invisible.

The field of educational psychology draws from a variety of diverse disciplines including human development across the life span, measurement and statistics, learning and motivation, and teaching. And within these different disciplines, many other fields are featured including psychology, anthropology, education, sociology, public health, school psychology, counseling, history, and philosophy. In fact, when taught at the college or university level, educational psychology is an ambitious course that undertakes the presentation of many different topics all tied together by the theme of how the individual can best function in an "educational" setting, loosely defined as anything from pre-school through adult education. Educational psychology can be defined as the application of what we know about learning and motivation, development, and measurement and statistics to educational settings (both school- and community-based).

From Booklist
Educational psychology crosses many facets of education: learning, human development, statistics, curriculum, teaching. Many current issues, including obesity, distance education, vouchers, and bullying, touch on educational psychology. Nearly 300 academicians and researchers, mainly from the U.S., contributed to this reference work “providing overviews and explanations of the major topics” and intended for “an educated reader who may be uninformed” about the field. The encyclopedia contains about 250 entries, from Abstinence education to Zone of proximal development. Coverage seems well balanced. The beginning of each volume includes a list of 19 broad topics with related entries, ranging from 3 articles for “Organizations” (which omits many valuable groups) to about 40 for “Human Development.” Other headings, such as “Classroom Achievement,” “Cognitive Development,” “Ethnicity/Race/Culture,” “Peers/Peer Influences,” and “Testing/Measurement/Evaluation and Theory,” indicate the encyclopedia’s range. The signed entries range from 1,000 to 5,000 words. Each entry begins with basic definitions and provides informative discussion, sometimes with a historical perspective. A list of cross-references and a selective bibliography complete each entry. A few charts and diagrams are scattered throughout the work. A detailed index concludes each volume; major index headings include many specific subheadings. Writing is clear and professional. Concepts are well explained without undue detail. This reference work provides a fine introduction to many basic educational psychology topics and serves as a useful addition to academic and large public library collections. --Lesley Farmer

Review
"Editor Salkind (psychology & research in education, Univ. of Kansas; Introduction to Theories of Human Development) here synthesizes expert-written contributions centering on the complex field of educational psychology and drawing on a range of disciplines: anthropology, psychology, sociology, education, public health, counseling, history, and philosophy. Advancing Salkind's seminal three-volume Encyclopedia of Human Development (Sage, 2005) and broader in scope than Barry J. Zimmerman and Dale H. Schunk's Educational Psychology: A Century of Contributions (Lawrence Erlbaum, 2002), which reads like a who's who in the field, this two-volume set succeeds in its stated aim of opening up the discipline of educational psychology to a wide general audience. The 275 topically organized entries and a reader's guide comprising 19 key themes (e.g., classroom achievement, language development, research methods and statistics) combine with See also references, further readings, and an extensive index to create a framework from which to educate and elucidate fundamental information on this important topic. BOTTOM LINE This comprehensive, informative, cross-disciplinary, and authoritative encyclopedia supports a holistic approach to preschool to adult education and would make a welcome addition to any undergraduate collection."
―Library Journal (Marianne E. Giltrud Library Journal 2008-05-15)

“SAGE Reference has carved a niche for itself by identifying new areas of professional or academic endeavor and producing well-written guides that help to define the fields for students or new professionals. Typically, these encyclopedias introduce the concepts and issues essential to the developing field of learning. Experts explore and explain both theory and practice. The history of the discipline and the development of professional standards also are surveyed. Biographical entries highlight the work of key contributors to that process. Other entries focus on the training necessary for professional participation and the specialties possible within the field. In this case, SAGE has applied its well-tested method to educational psychology. On some levels, educational psychology has been around for years, as both a career path and field of study. For decades academic and career counselors have guided students in making choices about their future. Researchers of language, learning and cognitive development have long studied peer influences, memory, creativity and other factors in relation to school children. Recently, this disparate areas of activity are increasingly viewed both as intergrally related and as an important specialty within the field of education. Many related areas of research involve this nexus of education and psychology. Individual academic achievement, classroom management, gender differences in learning, intelligence, social development, as well as testing and measurement all fall within the scope of this encyclopedia. Public polices have also impacted the role of psychology with a host of mandated educational directives on everything from standardized testing to drug prevention and sex education. Professional standards are addressed in discussions of national organizations, research methods and reaching. Such social factors as family, ethnicity and culture are all explored. From applied behavior analysis to vicarious reinforcement, overviews of theories outline concepts basic to the field of educational psychology. Each of the 275 scholarly articles give sample suggestions for further research. All told, the set provides a useful instruction to a bourgeoning area of study and is highly recommended for academic libraries.”

Review
"I recommend this book for school leadership teams and study groups delving into the school improvement process. Earl and Katz manage to make leaders feel comfortable with using data to improve student achievement. The authors help reduce the fear of 'number crunching' with vignettes that show how meaningful data analysis through a team approach can truly help direct our efforts to improve academic outcomes." (Ronald L. Russell, Assessment Consultant 2005-10-10)

"Leading Schools in a Data-Rich World is just what the doctor ordered to make data work for the betterment of schools. It is simultaneously deep and practical. It puts data at the center, but also puts it in perspective. It gives data a purpose and a set of conceptual and strategic tools for using knowledge wisely and effectively." (From the Foreword by Michael Fullan 2005-10-19)

"The book that every school administrator needs. A clear blueprint for establishing a school climate open to an evidence-based approach to programmatic change." (PsycCRITIQUES, August 2006 2006-08-21)

Leading Schools in a Data-Rich World
By Robert T. Hess
Leading Schools in a Data-Rich World (2006) by Earl and Katz has many strong features. Since it is not a compilation of authors, it is cohesive and easy to read. This book introduces a middle school in the beginning and takes the reader through that school's journey with data. Using the metaphor of a painter, the authors make using data compelling and emphasize the importance of asking questions about your data and developing an inquiring mind about data. Using the term "data literate," the reader comes to understand that using data effectively is a process--a long term commitment.

The book includes assignments along the way which are intended for school staffs to use and apply to their own school. This book is an excellent introduction to data, how to use data effectively, and a great place for data teams to start. There are many examples of concept maps and questioning strategies and developing hypothesis activities. The 7.5 x 10" format of the book makes it very convenient for readers to photocopy the assignment sheets, write in the margins, and use the book as a living text so that they can connect it to the work they doing in their own school. Leading Schools in a Data-Rich World is a great primer for helping teachers begin using data appropriately and effectively. Strongly Recommended.

Encyclopedia of Urban Studies 2 Volume SetFrom SAGE Publications, Inc

The United Nations estimates that by 2030, more than two-thirds of the total world population will live in urban areas. Most of this increase will take place not in Europe or in the United States but in the megacities and newly emerging urban regions of what used to be called the developing world.

Urban studies is an expansive and growing field, covering many disciplines and professional fields, each with its own schedule of conferences, journals, and publication series. These two volumes address the specific theories, key studies, and important figures that have influenced not just the individual discipline but also the field of urban studies more generally. The Encyclopedia of Urban Studies is intended to present an overview of current work in the field and to serve as a guide for further reading in the field.

Key Features

  • Includes important work and traditions from each of the urban disciplines, including urban anthropology, urban economics, urban geography, urban history, urban politics, urban psychology, and urban sociology
  • Addresses both the growth and expansion of urban areas (urbanization) and the nature and quality of urban life (urbanism)
  • Demonstrates the international and interdisciplinary nature of the field with contributions from scholars in many different countries
  • Confronts a number of important issues, ranging from individual problems of poverty to societal problems of provision of adequate housing and social exclusion
  • Provides entries on a number of cities, including those in different historical periods and regions of the world and those that have been important in the development of urban studies

Key Themes

  • Disciplinary Approaches in Urban Studies
  • Urban Studies―Topical Areas
  • Urban Issues
  • Urban Planning
  • Urban Theory
  • Urban Transportation
  • Urban Culture
  • Places
  • Cities
  • Persons

The Encyclopedia of Urban Studies serves as an introduction to topics of significance in urban studies for an audience that includes undergraduate students, beginning graduate students of urban studies and the related urban disciplines, a broader public that has an interest in the new urban world, and even established teachers and scholars who are exploring new areas of study.

Review
"In this urban age there is clearly a need for such major works as Ray Hutchison's excellent two-volume Encyclopedia of Urban Studies.... This encyclopedia is a testament to the intellectual breadth of urban studies as a field, as well as to its significance and global scope. Scholars from around the world have contributed to what is an invaluable research tool for anyone studying aspects of both urbanization (the growth of cities) and urbanism (city life)." (P.D. Smith 2011-02-04)

"...The entries in this comprehensive work span the disciplines of economics, sociology, anthropology, urban planning, urban design and architecture, geography, and political science.... This is a forward-thinking reference work, focusing on topics relevant to the 21st-century metropolis.... Recommended. Lower-level undergraduate through faculty/ researchers; general readers." (CHOICE)

From Booklist
More than 50 percent of the world's population is now considered urban. Intended to provide “an overview of current work in the field and to serve as a guide for further reading,” this encyclopedia offers information about related disciplines, including urban anthropology, urban economics, urban geography, urban history, urban politics, urban psychology, and urban sociology as well as professional fields like architecture and urban planning. Volume 1 begins with an alphabetical list of the entries plus a “Reader's Guide.” In addition to entries pertinent to the various disciplines, the encyclopedia has entries for topics ranging from the theoretical (Urban semiotics, World system perspective) to the cultural (Film, Hip Hop) to the sociological (Crime, Ghetto). Also here are entries for specific places (Airport, Piazza); cities (Chicago, Illinois; Mexico City, Mexico); and individuals (Dickens, Charles; Jacobs, Jane). The content is extensively indexed and cross-referenced. Compared to works such as Routledge's Encyclopedia of the City (2005), Encyclopedia of Urban Studies has a more all-encompassing twist and lengthier, more complete entries. Entries average two to four pages in length, and each includes suggestions for further reading. One criticism is that, at best, this is background information because in an ever-changing world, some of the information was outdated before it was published. Information about recent events that have affected urban areas, like the bank, stock, and employment crises, are not in evidence. Recommended for academic and large public library collections. The set is also available as an e-book through Sage Reference Online. Although the electronic version is somewhat more expensive, it will most likely be widely used. --Diana Shonrock

Review
'This is a foundational book, beautifully framed for this new century. The old theories of self and identity must be revisited in these times of global and cultural transformation. What kinds of selves are now available to us? Which theories best help us make sense out of who we are today. Burkitt brilliantly charts a path through this complex set of issues, and we owe him a huge debt for doing so' - Norman K. Denzin, Distinguished Research Professor of Communications, Sociology and Humanities, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

'The first edition of this book brought difficult questions about selfhood together with equally awkward issues of power and the 'social'. Not since Mead or Goffman, perhaps, had this been attempted in such a useful way, and in such an assured and accessible text.

This completely reworked second edition retains all of these virtues, and takes the original analysis into new territory, not least with new chapters on gender and class.

If you're interested in identity - particularly how identity 'works' - this book is essential reading' - Richard Jenkins, Professor of Sociology, Sheffield University

This book has some good information but is a little awkward and has some inaccuracies in it. The general premise is good however.
