About the Author

William T. O’Donohue is a licensed clinical psychologist, professor of psychology and adjunct professor in the Department of Philosophy at University of Nevada, Reno, and a faculty member of the National Judicial College. He is widely recognized in the field for his proposed innovations in mental health service delivery, in treatment design and evaluation, and in knowledge of empirically supported cognitive behavioral therapies. He is a member of the Association for the Advancement for Behavior Therapy and served on the Board of Directors of this organization. Dr. O’Donohue has published over 50 books and 150 articles in scholarly journals and book chapters. For the past 14 years, he has been director of a free clinic that treats children who have been sexually abused and adults who have been sexually assaulted.



Katherine Fowler is an honors graduate student at Emory. She has a number of published articles to her credit, has engaged in long-term research projects, and has worked in clinical settings.

 



Scott O. Lilienfeld is professor of psychology at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The founder and editor of Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice, he is past president (2001-2002) of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology, Section III, Division 12 of the American Psychological Association. He has served on 10 editorial boards, including the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Psychological Assessment, Perspectives on Psychological Science, and Clinical Psychology Review. Dr. Lilienfeld has published over 200 articles, book chapters, and books on personality disorders (particularly psychopathic personality), personality assessment, anxiety disorders, pseudoscience in psychology, and evidence-based practices in clinical psychology. His work on psychological science and pseudoscience has been featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Boston Globe, USA Today, the New Yorker, and Scientific American. In addition, he has appeared on 20/20, CNN, NPR, and numerous other radio programs.

A book that is worth a look

I purchased and read through this book because I am interested in new developments which may occur with DSM-V, while you won't necessarily see this entirely in the book, each chapter offers updated information and perspectives from leaders in the field on the various personality disorders. My main interest is in depressive personality disorder, and there is a brief but fair review of research included in the last chapter. For anyone interested in this area it is worth checking out.

About the Author
James H. Stronge is the Heritage Professor in the Educational Policy, Planning, and Leadership Area at the College of William and Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia. His research interests include policy and practice related to teacher quality, and teacher and administrator evaluation. He has worked with numerous school districts and other educational organizations to design and implement evaluation systems for teachers, administrators, and support personnel. His work on effective teachers focuses on how to identify effective teachers and how to enhance teacher effectiveness. Dr. Stronge has presented his research at conferences such as American Educational Research Association and Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, conducted workshops for national and state organizations, and worked with local school districts. He has been a teacher, counselor, and district-level administrator. His doctorate is in the area of educational administration and planning from the University of Alabama.

Combine these hypothetical titles into a single volume, add a statement of scope and purpose that combines personal history with an excellent survey of the intellectual and academic milieu out of which the specialized subjects arose, and one has the present title. Lunsford (Stanford), Wilson (Univ. of Minnesota, Twin Cities), and Eberly (Pennsylvania State Univ., University Park) offer 32 chapters in four divisions: "Historical Studies in Rhetoric," "Rhetoric across the Disciplines," "Rhetoric and Pedagogy," and "Rhetoric and Public Discourse." The many contributors remind the reader that rhetoric today is an ever-expanding, inclusive subject best characterized as an interdisciplinary creature ranging freely across (and even beyond) the fields of English, composition and writing, and communications. About the Author
Andrea A. Lunsford is the Louise Hewlett Nixon Professor of English and Director of the Program in Writing and Rhetoric at Stanford University and a member of the faculty of The Bread Loaf Graduate School of English. She has designed and taught undergraduate and graduate courses in writing history and theory, rhetoric, literacy studies, and intellectual property and is the author or co-author of many books and articles, including The Everyday Writer; Essays on Classical Rhetoric and Modern Discourse; Singular Texts/Plural Authors: Perspectives on Collaborative Writing; Reclaiming Rhetorica: Women in the History of Rhetoric, Everything’s an Argument, Exploring Borderlands: Composition and Postcolonial Studies and Writing Matters: Rhetoric in Public and Private Lives.

Kirt Wilson’s research moves from African American to presidential rhetoric and from the history of rhetoric to the rhetoric of history. A graduate of Northwestern University, he is currently an Associate Professor and the Director of Graduate Studies for the University of Minnesota’s Communication Studies Department. He has won numerous awards from the National Communication Association including the New Investigator Award (2001) and the Karl R. Wallace Memorial Award (2002). His book The Reconstruction Desegregation Debate (2002) published by Michigan State Press won NCA’s Winans-Wichelns Memorial Award (2003) and the Marie Hochmuth Nichols Award (2003). In 2004, the University of Minnesota honored professor Wilson with the prestigious McKnight Presidential Fellowship, an honor extended to only three to four tenured associate faculty each year. Kirt Wilson teaches graduate courses on U.S. public discourse, textual criticism and methods, African American civil rights rhetoric, and theories of race, culture, and public memory. Currently, he is working on two book projects. The first investigates the intellectual and conceptual history of “mimesis” or imitation in the nineteenth century and the second is a study of the sentimental aesthetic in contemporary commemorations of the civil rights movement.

Rosa A. Eberly, Associate Professor of Rhetoric in the departments of Communication Arts and Sciences and English and Fellow of the Laboratory for Public Scholarship and Democracy at Penn State, is author of CITIZEN CRITICS: LITERARY PUBLIC SPHERES, co-author of THE ELEMENTS OF REASONING (2d ed), and co-editor of A LABORATORY FOR PUBLIC SCHOLARSHIP AND DEMOCRACY, as well as articles on classrooms as protopublic spaces, rhetoric and democracy, and the place of rhetoric in higher education. Before returning to her almissima mater in 2002, Eberly was Associate Professor and Director of the Writing Center at The University of Texas at Austin and affiliated faculty of the Annette Strauss Institute for Civic Participation and the program in Technology, Literacy, and Culture. A first-generation college graduate, she is grateful for the many transformative teachers and students who have blessed her life.

About the Author

Professor Cathy Nutbrown is Head of the School of Education at the University of Sheffield, where she teaches and researches in the field of early childhood education.

Cathy began her career as a teacher of young children and has since worked in a range of settings and roles with children, parents, teachers, and other early childhood educators. Cathy is committed to finding ways of working ‘with respect’ with young children, and sees the concept of quality in the context of what it means to develop curriculum and pedagogy in the early years with the ambition of working in a climate of ‘respectful education’.

She established the University of Sheffield MA in Early Childhood Education in 1998 and a Doctoral Programme in Early Childhood Education in 2008. In 2010 she contributed to the Tickell Review of the Early Years Foundation In June 2012 she reported on her year-long independent review for government on early years and childcare qualifications (The Nutbrown Review). She is Editor-in-Chief of the SAGE Journal of Early Childhood Research and author of over fifty publications on aspects of early childhood education.

About the Author
After his own initial training at the University of Exeter (some time in the 1980’s), Mark took up a post as an Educational Psychologist in the West Midlands. He moved to work as an EP in Bromley and then to the Essex E.P.S and also began working as an academic tutor on the Educational Psychology training programme at the University of East London. He has since been Head of National Advisory and Assessment Services at SCOPE, where he developed integrated models of assessment, and services for people with complex disabilities. More recently he held the post of EP trainer at the Tavistock Clinic and University of Essex and in October 2009 he was appointed the Programme Director for Educational Psychology at UEL.

Clinical Interests Dr Martin qualified as a mental health nurse in 1983, his on-going clinical career spans 30 years within and with the UK National Health Service. Dr Martin's work within the clinical arena encompasses direct therapeutic intervention with service users, management of service provision within the NHS and educational interventions within a clinical and academic setting. More recently Dr Martin's clinical practice has focused on working with service users who have on-going and complex mental health needs.

I am a Medical Sociologist and have been researching social aspects of long-term illness since the early 1990s conducting research with people living with a range of long term conditions. My most recent book 'The End of Stigma? Changes in the Social Experience of Long-Term Illness' was published by Routledge in 2009.

I am Director of the National Institute of Health Research Research Design Service for the East of England.

About the Author
Lynn H. Turner (Ph.D., Northwestern University) is Professor of Communication Studies in the College of Communication at Marquette University. Her research areas of interest include interpersonal, gendered, and family communication.  She is the co-author or co-editor of over 10 books as well as several articles and book chapters (many with Rich West). Lynn has served in a number of different positions: Director of Graduate Studies for the College of Communication at Marquette University; President of the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender (OSCLG), President of Central States Communication Association (CSCA), and Chair of the Family Communication Division for the National Communication Association.  In her free time, Lynn delights in babysitting for her grandchildren.

Richard West (Ph.D., Ohio University, 1991) is Professor of Communication Studies at Emerson College. He received his BA and MA in Communication at Illinois State University. 

 

Rich is the co-author (with Lynn Turner) of several leading books in communication (Perspectives on Family Communication/4th ed; Interpersonal Communication/2nd ed; IPC/1st ed; Introducing Communication Theory/5th ed; Gender and Communication/3rd ed;) and served as co-editor of the Sage Sourcebook of Family Communication.  He is the author/co-author of over 40 articles and essays and he has participated in over 100 NCA programs.  Rich’s work has appeared in Communication Quarterly, Communication Education, Qualitative Research Reports in Communication, Communication Reports, Journal of Family Communication, among others. He has served as Guest Co-Editor of the Journal of Family Communication twice and has been a member of nearly 10 journal editorial boards in communication.

 

Rich’s work intersects family, identity, and culture. Yet, he admits to being somewhat of a ‘scholarly nomad,’ exploring a number of different topics, including gay parenting, holiday stress, student questions in the classroom, job burnout, among other areas. 

 

Rich is the recipient of several recognitions, including Outstanding Alumni in Communication awards from both Illinois State University and Ohio University.  ISU has also recognized him as a “Distinguished Alum” in Forensics and as an “Outstanding Alum in Teacher Education.”  He has also been recognized as an ECA Research Fellow and was the recipient of ECA’s Past President’s Award.  In 2012, the Communication Institute for Online Scholarship named him a “Leading Scholar in Communication Education.”  

 

He has served as President of the Eastern Communication (2008) and the National Communication Association (2012).

About the Author
Daved Barry is Professor of Creative Organization Studies in the Department of Management, Politics and Philosophy at the Copenhagen Business School, and Adjunct Professor at Nova SBE (Universidade Nova de Lisboa School of Business and Economics). Earlier he studied painting, chemistry, music, and cooking, eventually going on to complete a BA (hons) in Psychology and a PhD in Strategic Management and Organizational Psychology at the University of Maryland. In 1986 he moved to Syracuse University, NY, where he taught strategic management, and then to New Zealand where he held the Victoria University Chair in Creative Organization Studies. From there he assumed the Banco BPI Chair in Creative Organization Studies in Lisbon, and eventually moved to CBS in 2010. His work focuses on how design and the arts can improve organizing, problem solving, innovation, managing, and leadership. Some of his accomplishments include the co-founding of AACORN (Arts, Aesthetics, Creativity, and Organization Research Network), and LAICS (www.laics.net), a graduate program in innovation and leadership. In 2007 he was awarded the Career Achievement Award for Innovative Scholarship, from the Imagination Lab Foundation and the European Academy of Management, and in 2008 published The Sage Handbook of New Approaches to Management and Organization, a compendium of contemporary management thinking.

New and stimulating flavors

Barry and Hansen's introduction to `The Sage handbook of new approaches in management and organization' expresses a frustration that can be found in parts of the organizational theory community: The battle lines became sharply drawn in the eighties, with a polarization between positivism and postpositivism or modernist and postmodernists. In the nineties the demarcation was reinforced by scholars defending and retaining incommensurability between the camps rooted in the sixties' polarization between functional and interpretive approaches. Barry and Hansen now call for coming together "in the same building for the first time in a long time". They suggest that the time has come for the `relational' - for combination between what has been fragmented - after years of fragmentation and pluralism. And they believe a relational turn will contribute to improved organizations.

Among all the handbooks of organization and management, Barry and Hansen's new book adds new and stimulating flavors. It is highly recommended.
