About the Author
Kathy M. Evans, who received her doctorate from the Pennsylvania State University, is associate professor at the University of South Carolina where she is the Program Coordinator of the Counselor Education Program. She is widely published with articles in major journals and chapters in key textbooks in the area of multicultural counseling, with special emphases on issues of race, career counseling, and feminist issues. Her most recent books include Gaining Cultural Competence in Career Counseling and Introduction to Feminist Therapy.

Elizabeth A. Kincade was awarded her Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Penn State in 1989. Presently, she teaches at both the Indiana University of Pennsylvania (as an associate professor) and at Walden University School of Psychology. She is a licensed psychologist who provides counseling services at IUP. She has written widely on the topic of feminist counseling.



Susan R. Seem achieved her Ph.D. in 1991 from Penn State. She is associate professor of counselor education at SUNY Brockport. She is also a licensed psychologist and has practiced counseling in many clinical venues. She is past Director of University Counseling Center at Shippensburg University. Dr. Seem's publishing history includes many journal articles in feminist family therapy, GBLT counseling, and gender issues in counseling situations.

About the Author
Michael S. Hale has served as a teacher, principal, professional developer, professor, university administrator, and educational software executive.  His passion for student inquiry has resulted in many years of experience with participant-centered discussions in a wide variety of settings.   A National Paideia Faculty member, he has worked with many teachers and students to develop the knowledge and skills to engage in idea- and text-based conversations.  He currently spends most of his days as Vice President for Curriculum Consulting with VitalSource Technologies in Raleigh, NC, where he works with educators to transform didactic materials into more interactive digital formats. His formal education includes a B.A. in Philosophy from Auburn University and a M.A. and Ph.D in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Carolina.

Elizabeth A. City has served as a teacher, principal, and instructional coach, primarily in North Carolina and Massachusetts. In addition to enjoying countless student-centered discussions in her own classroom, as a National Paideia Faculty member, she has worked with teachers and students across the country as they have learned to facilitate and participate in text-based conversations. Much of Liz’s current work centers on supporting principals and teachers in creating collaborative communities where rich dialogue and learning for both adults and children is the norm. She is a member of the Senior Faculty of Boston’s School Leadership Institute, where she teaches courses in using data, learning and teaching, and professional development to Boston Public School Principal Fellows. She is currently working on her doctorate at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

It is essential for teachers to respond to the kids, rather than insist the kids respond to us. This was a peek inside a method that did work
for these teachers. Mind you, it must always be adapted to new environments and new populations.

Discussions

This is an excellent source for modeling student-led discussions or Socratic Seminars in the classroom. I require my students to participate in student-led discussions 3-4 times a month, and I have noticed that most of them have become more self-confident while while offering their opinions to the group. I have also discovered improved comprehension as well as the ability to create higher-level questions which they use during the discussions. I would highly recommend this book.

About the Author

George D. Nelson is a professor, writer, teacher, curriculum designer, director, and educational consultant. His work and influence has been felt in a wide range of institutions and educationally oriented organizations, colleges and universities, state departments of education, state departments of corrections, public schools, corporations, community outreach organizations, and foundations. Curriculum he has created has been used internationally to help teachers and trainers better reach their dramatic learners.

Professor Nelson travels extensively giving workshops, lectures, and inservice training for trainers, teachers, professors, and administrators. He is presently an associate professor at Brigham Young University with a dual appointment in the David O. McKay School of Education and the College of Fine Arts and Communications. He has received numerous teaching awards and has been recognized by the American Alliance for Theatre in Education with the Linn Wright Special Recognition Award for his work with incarcerated dramatic learners.

Only his excellent memory and specialist interests enable him to continue, and pass his GCSEs and a GNVQ in Media Studies.

At university, studying Journalism, he was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. Suddenly his life made more sense, and his self-awareness meant his self-confidence returned, resulting in world travel, a Masters qualification and finally, acceptance.

Chris Mitchell was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome in 1998 when he was 20 years old. He has since achieved an MA (Hons) in Information and Library Management. Based in Sunderland, he is an advocate for Asperger's syndrome and speaks at many public events about the condition.

'This is an unusual book in that it is written by a man where most autobiographical books about autism are written by women. It is both very readable and well-written, with a detached an honest account of his childhood, family life and life prior to diagnosis. He gets on well with his family, and they are happy that he has written this book, and happy with the book, despite some implied criticism of how they brought him up. Indeed, it comes across as less aggressive than some accounts, so it is particularly insightful for parents and other empathotypicals who might find more black-and-white descriptions of their mistakes hurtful.

As with every book written by someone on the spectrum that I have seen, it is a short book, giving a snapshot of his difficulties and joys before and also after his diagnosis, giving highlights of specific problems and pleasures. Overall I think it would be a good book for someone who recognises himself in the author, or as a starting point for deepening your understanding of your brother, son or friend, or, if you are already interested in this condition, to broaden your understanding of the ways that it present itself' - Asperger United

Boring and poorly written

The style of writing is often tangential. The book is replete with obscure bits of mediocre information that the writer seems to add purely because he finds them interesting, rather than that they are germaine to the topic or add to any understanding of the concepts. If I didn't have to have this book for class, I would have returned it immediately.

About the Author
Jane A. G. Kise, Ed. D., is an educational consultant, specializing in teambuilding, coaching, and professional development. She is also the author or coauthor of over 20 books, including Differentiated Coaching: A Framework for Helping Teachers Change; Differentiated School Leadership: Effective Collaboration, Communication and Change Through Personality Type; Intentional Leadership; and LifeKeys: Discover Who You are. She holds an MBA in finance from the Carlson School of Management and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Thomas, both in Minnesota. Kise has worked with diverse organizations across the United States and in Saudi Arabia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Her clients include Minneapolis Public Schools and various public and private schools, The Bush Foundation, NASA, Twin Cities Public Television, and numerous other institutions. About the Author

Neil J. Salkind received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Human Development, and after teaching for 35 years at the University of Kansas, he remains as a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education, where he continues to collaborate with colleagues and work with students. His early interests were in the area of children’s cognitive development, and after research in the areas of cognitive style and (what was then known as) hyperactivity, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina’s Bush Center for Child and Family Policy. His work then changed direction and the focus was on child and family policy, specifically the impact of alternative forms of public support on various child and family outcomes. He has delivered more than 150 professional papers and presentations; written more than 100 trade and textbooks; and is the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (Sage), Theories of Human Development (Sage), and Exploring Research (Prentice Hall). He has edited several encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Human Development, the Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics, and the recently published Encyclopedia of Research Design. About the Author

Alex Alvarez, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Northern Arizona University. From 2001 until 2003 he was the founding Director of the Martin-Springer Institute for Teaching the Holocaust, Tolerance, and Humanitarian Values. His first book, Governments, Citizens, and Genocide, was published by Indiana University Press in 2001. His other books include Murder American Style (2002), Genocidal Crimes (2009), and Native America and the Question of Genocide (2014). He has also served as an editor for the journal Violence and Victims, was a founding co-editor of the journal Genocide Studies and Prevention, was a co-editor of the H-Genocide List Serve. He has been invited to speak and present his research in various countries such as Austria, Bosnia, Canada, England, Germany, Lithuania, the Netherlands, and Sweden.



Ronet Bachman, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice at the University of Delaware. She is coauthor of Statistical Methods for Crime and Criminal Justice (3rd ed.) and coeditor of Explaining Crime and Criminology: Essays in Contemporary Criminal Theory. In addition, she is author of Death and Violence on the Reservation and coauthor of Stress, Culture, and Aggression in the United States; and Violence: The Enduring Problem as well as numerous articles and papers that examine the epidemiology and etiology of violence, with a particular emphasis on women, the elderly, and minority populations. Her most recent federally funded research was a mixed-methods study that investigated the long-term trajectories of offending behavior using official data of a prison cohort released in the early 1990s and then interviewed in 2009.

The publisher really screwed up the printing alignment in this book. Some of the chapter title headers are cut off so you only see the bottom half of the title. Someone was asleep when watching quality control on my copy.
