Matt DeLisi (Ph.D. University of Colorado, 2000) is Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Coordinator of the Criminal Justice Studies Program at Iowa State University. Dr. DeLisi's primary areas of study are career criminals and self-control theory and his research has appeared in Advances in Criminological Theory, American Journal of Criminal Justice, Behavioral Sciences & the Law, Crime & Criminal Justice International, Criminal Justice Policy Review, Criminal Justice Review, Criminal Justice Studies: A Critical Journal of Crime, Law & Society, Encyclopedia of Juvenile Justice, International Journal of Offender Therapy & Comparative Criminology, Journal of Criminal Justice, Justice Quarterly, Pakistan Journal of Social Science, The Social Science Journal, The Justice Professional, and Women & Criminal Justice. I recommend this book.

This book was informative and well written. It takes a criminological perspective on the relatively small group of men who commit the majority of crimes. Some of the data is surprising. This book would be good reading for anyone in law enforcement.

About the Author

Award-winning author and visionary educational leader Alan M. Blankstein is founder and president of the HOPE Foundation, a not-for-profit organization whose honorary chair is Nobel Prize winner Archbishop Desmond Tutu. A former “high-risk” youth, Alan began his career in education as a music teacher, has worked in youth-serving organizations since 1983, and has created award-winning publications and video staff development programs. He is the author of the best-selling book Failure Is Not an Option®: Six Principles That Guide Student Achievement in High-Performing Schools, which received the 2005 Book of the Year award from Learning Forward (formerly NSDC), and has been nominated for three other national and international awards.

A former “high risk” youth, Alan began his career in education as a music teacher and has worked in youth-serving organizations since 1983, including the March of Dimes, Phi Delta Kappa, and the National Educational Service (now Solution Tree) which he founded in 1987 and directed for 12 years.

In addition to authorship of this award-winning book, Alan is Publisher of three Failure Is Not an Option® video series and Senior Editor along with Paul Houston of the thirteen-volume The Soul of Educational Leadership series. Alan also co-authored the Reaching Today’s Youth curriculum and has published articles in Educational Leadership, The School Administrator, Executive Educator, High School Magazine, Reaching Today’s Youth, and Inside the Workshop. Alan has also provided keynote presentations and workshops for virtually every major educational organization.

More self-aggrandized school reform snake oil.

Blankstein's FNO approach has no empirical support and the schools he applied his principles ten years ago are failing as miserably today as they were before he intervened, which calls his anecdotal support into question. Although more recent editions have new school and new testimonials, I remain skeptical. The book is full of political posturing and glittering generality, but if you're looking for a practical solution to vesting disenfranchised students, I'd look elsewhere.

Failure is not an Option

I am a retired school superintendent with forty years of experience in the field. I found this work to be a rehash of ideas that have been around for more than a decade. However, that does not mean that implementation of some of the suggestions are not worthy of consideration in schools that have not already adopted a team orientated approach to education.

About the Author
Priscilla Dass-Brailsford is an Associate Professor in the Division of Counseling and Psychology at Lesley University. She has worked with underserved and chronically traumatized populations specifically in child advocacy and sexual abuse evaluations. Additionally, Dr. Dass-Brailsford coordinated a state-wide crisis team, the first of its kind at its inception, which responded to incidents of community violence.

Dr. Dass-Brailsford’s research projects are multiple: resiliency in the aftermath of political trauma and socio-economic stress; the effects of community violence, multicultural research on institutional trust and racial identity; the effects of secondary trauma on first responders and other volunteers; and the benefits of walk-in mental health services for disaster survivors. She was a first responder in New York after the terrorist attack in 2001 and deployed to New Orleans immediately after Hurricane Katrina (2005). She has returned to the area several times to work with mental health providers. This edited book was inspired by her work with the survivors of Hurricane Katrina; it is a testimony to their resiliency despite the challenges of loss, dislocation, recovery and reconstruction.

Dr. Priscilla Dass-Brailsford's book is bound to be as much a classic and must-have book as Judith Herman's work on trauma.
A Practical Approach to Trauma: Empowering Interventions not only addresses a diverse array of trauma incidents, it also weaves multicultural perspectives throughout. Dr. Dass-Brailsford's writing style is enjoyable to read and her empowering perspective is inspiring. A must-have book for everyone working in counseling and psychotherapy fields.

About the Author

Hal Portner is a former K-12 teacher and administrator. He was assistant director of the Summer Math Program for High School Women and Their Teachers at Mount Holyoke College, and for 24 years he was a teacher and then administrator in two Connecticut public school districts. From 1985 to 1995, he was a member of the Connecticut State Department of Education’s Bureau of Certification and Professional Development, where, among other responsibilities, he served as coordinator of the Connecticut Institute for Teaching and Learning and worked closely with school districts to develop and carry out professional development and teacher evaluation plans and programs. Hal developed and teaches for Western New England University a 3 credit MEd in Curriculum and Instruction online core course in Mentoring, Coaching, and professional development.

Portner writes, develops materials, trains mentors, facilitates the development of new teacher and peer-mentoring programs, and consults for school districts and other educational organizations and institutions. In addition to Mentoring New Teachers, he is the author of Training Mentors Is Not Enough: Everything Else Schools and Districts Need to Do (2001), Being Mentored: A Guide for Protégés (2002), Workshops that Really Work: The ABCs of Designing and Delivering Sensational Presentations (2005), and editor of Teacher Mentoring and Induction: The State of the Art and Beyond (2005) – all published by Corwin Press. He holds an MEd from the University of Michigan and a 6th-year Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in education admin­istration from the University of Connecticut. This is the book you were looking for, for mentoring!

In Hal Portner's Teacher Mentoring and Induction: The State of the Art and Beyond, we are presented with a holistic approach to mentoring new teachers to the advantage of all - students, teachers, administrators, and education in general. For those who are interested in how to implement mentoring strategies at the state and local levels, you will not find this collection of essays disappointing at all. What is helpful here is that Portner not only offers us multiple perspectives from the authors, but every chapter ends with a helpful chart for those involved with mentoring or even contemplating mentoring as a profession or augmentation to their educational careers. For those familiar with research design, this anthology is the "Creswell" approach to mentoring - this is not just theory, it is practical, useful knowledge, presented in a way that is easy to understand, digest, and will leave you with a sense that, yes, there is hope for new teachers out there, facing the daily struggle of keeping a head above the waters of teaching and learning.

Useful diagrams, charts, pictures, and comprehensive lists and checklists lead the reader through a journey where mentoring is not just a buddy system, but a structured medium with a beginning, middle, and end. Along the way, the authors challenge future and existing mentors to constantly evaluate themselves and ensure that they, too, have a quality assurance program in place. Essentially, the authors note, if we are going to spend precious education dollars on mentoring, then we must make programs that best suit the individual needs of the school; the book does not present an all-encompassing "cookie cutter" formula on what great mentoring looks like, but the collection does offer a methodical, thoughtful approach to creating, implementing, and evaluating mentoring programs for new teachers.

All teachers can remember their very first day of teaching school and, of course, their first year. They can remember how terrifying it was, how he or she was usually a miserable or moderate teacher at best, but what this book offers is the chance to implement effective mentoring techniques to not only cushion the new teacher's fall - to help them get back up - but to promote an environment of lifelong teachers, not 5-year teachers. Teachers, mentors, mentors of mentors, administrators, principals, superintendents, and parents of students can all find useful information contained in this book. It's time to be inspired to view the teacher as a whole person - not just a qualified person, but a person of extreme value - and to encourage all levels of educators to challenge themselves and realize how important it is to implement efficacious mentoring of new teachers.

Janice L. DeLucia-Waack is currently an Associate Professor and Program Director for School Counseling in the Department of Counseling, School, and Educational Psychology at the University at Buffalo, SUNY. She is also currently the Executive Director for the Association for Specialists in Group Work. She is the former editor of the Journal for Specialists in Group Work, and is a fellow in the American Counseling Association; Association for Specialists in Group Work (a division of ACA; and Group Psychology and Group Psychotherapy, a division of the American Psychological Association. She is author/editor of two books, Using Music in Children of Divorce Groups:  A Session-By-Session Manual for Counselors and Multicultural Counseling and Training:  Implications and Challenges for Practice, and co-editor/author of three other books: The Practice of Multicultural Group Work: Visions and Perspectives from the Field (with Jeremiah Donigian); Group Work Experts Share Their Favorite Activities: A Guide to Choosing, Planning, Conducting, and Processing (with Karen Bridbord and Jennifer Kleiner) , School Counselors Share Their Favorite Activities: A Guide to Choosing, Planning, Conducting, and Processing (with Louisa Foss, Judy Green, Kelli Wolfe-Stiltner), How to Design a Group Plan (with Amy Nitza) as part of Robert Conyne Group Work Practice Kit: Improving the Everyday Practice of Group Work. Comprehensive textbook

This is a comprehensive book covering all the major topics that a student would need for the statistics modules in various social science courses. Managers need to have an understanding of statistics so that they are able to manipulate the numerous masses of data that come their way into meaningful and useful information that they can employ in making decisions in organisations.

The author presented the material in the book in a clear and in-depth manner, making it suitable for social science students studying statistics or carrying out research required statistical manipulations. The author also provided several examples and exercises that should assist the reader in consolidating his/her understanding of the concepts described in the book.

Most managers are consumers rather than producers of statistical information. This book equips you with the expertise to enable you to be an informed consumer who knows the right questions to ask and the kind of information to request from those who produce the statistical information in the organization.

Too much verbiage, not enough interaction.

As much as I appreciate the attempt to write a book on statistics for the social science field that is easier and relevant, I think this book falls short. Having taken a class in psychological statistics, college algebra and trigonometry and finite math, I assumed this book would be fairly self-explanatory and straightforward. However, I found myself continually lost in explanations and jargon. What would have made this book better is that it be converted into or accompanied by a workbook. Math, in any field, that is written in "textbook format" loses the student by too much verbiage and not enough interaction.

About the Author
Peter Meiksins is a Professor of Sociology at Cleveland State University. He is the author of many articles on the sociology of work, including studies of the work experiences of engineers and part-time work in professional technical occupations and essays on labor process theory, professional work in comparative perspective, and contemporary labor relations. His work has appeared in a variety of journals, including Work and Occupations, Theory and Society, Economic and Industrial Democracy, Work, Employment and Society, and Sociological Quarterly. He is the author of Putting Work in Its Place: A Quiet Revolution (with Peter Whalley) and of Engineering Labour: Technical Workers in Comparative Perspective (with Chris Smith); he is co-editor of Rethinking the Labor Process (with Mark Wardell and Tom Steiger) and Rising From the Ashes: Labor in the Age of Global Capitalism (with Ellen Wood and Michael Yates). In 1996, together with Peter Whalley, he received a major grant from the Sloan Foundation to study “Flexible Work for Technical Professionals.” His current research, again with Peter Whalley, concerns the sociology of design work (a study of the work of graphic designers, industrial designers and interior designers). This research has been supported by a Fund For the Advancement of the Discipline Grant from the American Sociological Foundation.

Stephen Sweet is an assistant professor of sociology at Ithaca College and formerly the associate director of the Cornell Careers Institute: A Sloan Center for the Study of Working Families. He has written a number of articles on the challenges confronting working families, focusing on the issues of concern to dual career couples across the life course. His studies appeared in the a variety of publications, including the New Directions in Life Course Research, Journal of Vocational Behavior, Journal of Marriage and the Family, Innovative Higher Education, The International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters, Journal of College Student Development, and Community, Work, and Family. His recent books, College and Society: An Introduction to the Sociological Imagination and Data Analysis with SPSS: A First Course in Applied Statistics (now in its second edition), have been extensively adopted in sociology courses. In 2001 Dr. Sweet was awarded a Sloan Officers Grant to study the effects of corporate downsizing on dual earner couples. He is currently completing two book projects, The Handbook of Work and Family (with co-authors Marcie Pitt-Catsouphes and Ellen Ernst Kossek) which will be published in 2005 by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates and Managing Careers in the New Risk Economy, written in collaboration with his co-investigator Phyllis Moen.
