Review
"The research presented in this book is comprehensive, and it is obvious that the author is very well versed in the area of positive psychology. A definite strength of this book, and one that I think instructors and students will find particularly helpful, are the several case studies presented throughout the test, usually at the end of each chapter. These compelling case studies illustrate the concepts the are discussed in each chapter in vivid and real-world fashion." (Sameet Kumar 2006-10-11)

Inspiring Book
By Trish
This is a book filled with touching stories by resilient people. The author shows the current research and then lets people tell their own stories about how they survived and overcame trauma. Often these stories are at odds with the current research, and the author seems to feel that resilience is a common rather than an unusual attribute. Many of the stories are very moving vignettes that made me cry. The book was informative, touching and optimistic. In this time of great cynicism this book made me feel anything is possible!

Learning from resilient people: My view
By H. Stein
I purchased this book with great anticipation as I have read and written on this topic. The book covers many bases, including the uses of culture, support systems and spirituality to improve functioning and a strengths-based approach to therapy and counseling. It looks at resilience within various groups (different ethnic groups, in cases of abuse, old age, loss, mental illness, disability, etc.) The author uses individuals' personal stories to provide evidence for his (or other researchers') conclusions. However, I have found the book to be quite superficial and not particularly memorable; in spite of my interest in people's stories, I found myself putting it down more than I picked it up. And although I think the personal approach is potentially very compelling, there is perhaps too much emphasis on personal qualities and not enough focus on resilience as a process that involves the individual, family, community, and larger ecosystem, and just plain luck. I think it is probably most useful to students who have little previous knowledge of resilience.
