Review
"Communication as… is an excellent way to introduce students to various perspectives in the discipline. It makes the point that there is no right or wrong way to study communication but that the different perspectives are all legitimate and useful."

--Sonja K. Foss, University of Colorado at Denver (Sonja K. Foss)

"These shorter, more informal discussions of the implications of certain metaphors and analogies for communication theory will be very useful for stimulating critical thinking and generating interesting classroom discussions."

--Bradford "J" Hall, University of New Mexico (Bradford "J" Hall)

"This book provides incomparably unique and original perspectives explained by core scholars in their fields." (Do Kyun Kim, Ph.D. 2008-08-21)

Informational text. The author of the Storytelling chapter is enamored with the sound of their own voice. Most of the book is condescending and pretentious, but then again, most Communication scholars think they are geniuses and beyond reproach.

A different type of communication theory text...
By The Green Letter
Something needs to be said to counterbalance the 1-star review of this book by someone not even in the communication discipline. This book is not your typical communication theory book, in the best possible way. This book is not a laundry list of outdated communication theories. It is a metaphorical journey through many views on communication. Significant authors in the communication (WITHOUT THE "S") field talk about how they "see" communication. This book is a fabulous text for exploring a multitude of views on what communication is. The authors and editors leave the decision of what view is most appropriate for you, up to you. A very nice book overall.

A Transformative View of Communication
By Amazon Customer
While I did not purchase this item off of Amazon, I too wish to counterbalance the horrendous one-star reviews it has garnered. This text was presented by a professor as primarily intended for graduate courses, but in offering it to undergraduates in a upper level communication theory course along side Em Griffins text, there is great potential for great shifts in understanding for students. The chapters all offer perspectives which suggest different ways to view the most basic purpose or vehicle for communication as a whole. While some- like social identity and storytelling- primarily offer divergent paths that communication can take to further enrich itself, others- like translation and failure- present standpoints than could and should be held by all conscious communicators. Personal favorites included autoethnography, storytelling, and above all: transcendence. This is a very valuable text which can serve anyone from undergraduate to grad students to academically interested minds from other fields faithfully if you open your mind to the notions the authors offer.

In Illuminating Social Life: Classical and Contemporary Theory Revisited, Third Edition editor Peter Kivisto once again shows today's students how classical and contemporary social theories can be used to make sense of the world they inhabit. Through thirteen essays, the book applies various social theories from the past and the present to select facets of modern life, such as the Internet, the world of work, fast food restaurants, shopping malls, alcohol use, body building, sales and service, and new religious movements. All of the contributors to this collection of essays share a common purpose - to illustrate how different social theories are capable of providing significant understanding that, without theory, would not be grasped.

Class Necessity
By Amazon Customer
The book was clear and concise. It was easy to read and navigate. I did only use the sections which were assigned for my class. I cannot say I went through it in its entirety. I did like that it was paperback and that when I highlighted sections it did not bleed through to the next page or smear.

Comprehensive and Articulate
By A Customer
It is a great resource for anyone studying the aging process or is in the business of caring for the elderly. It confronts major issues that we are dealing with, and attempts to answer tough questions from both a personal, academic, professional and policy perspective.

Class Textbook- Maybe. Research -Heck No
By Tameeka A Douglas
Professor said we could get by with this version instead of the new one. But the statistics are now outdated. If you are getting this for a class and trying to save money by getting the older edition and your class is concept based , not Stat based, you might be able to use this. But absolutely not for current research.

Review
"After tracing concepts and values from Western, eastern, and Southern hemisphere theories of ethics, they present case examples treating such ethical dilemmas as rational suicide, counselor competence, conflict between client worldview and the law and culturally appropriate assessment. The text includes discussion questions and Web resources." (Reference & Research Book News 2006-10-10)

"One of the book's strengths is the overview of various ethical perspectives, which extends beyond what is usually included in ethics books. The authors review a variety of theories, including Western conceptualizations, along with more standard approaches, and Eastern, Middle Eastern, and Southern Hemisphere approaches. The historical background of each theory is interesting and provides context for the theory. In addition, the authors describe the major concepts for each theory, which is helpful in explaining the basics of the perspectives. Finally, each chapter's list of additional readings is helpful." (James L. Werth and Devon L. Cummings 2006-10-01)

Administrative Law (Administrative Law (Sage Publications)), by Steven J. Cann

In this new edition, author Steven J. Cann once again enlivens the topic of United States administrative law through the use of recent and "classic" legal cases to make it accessible and interesting to students.  Administrative Law, Fourth Edition is an engaging casebook that presents a unique problem-solving framework that contrasts democracy with the administrative state. This novel approach places the often complex subject matter of U.S. administrative law into a more comprehensible context. The Fourth Edition has been completely updated and revised and includes many new cases to reflect changes in the law since the year 2000.

Review

"Steven J. Cann proves that the study of administrative law need not be a dreary enterprise reserved only for boring bureaucrats and self-serving interest groups. Administrative Law, Third Edition is a lively text that students at all levels will find absorbing and relevant to the solution of many of the most difficult problems facing democratic government in the 21st century."

(Albert P. Melone)

"It has useful insights to offer. Written by a political scientist, it aims to be accessible and avoid legalese. In this it succeeds."

(Colin Crawford Local Government Studies)

From the Publisher
Distinguishing features of this text:

Student-Friendly Conceptual Framework. The book is organized around a conceptual framework that contrasts democracy with the administrative state or “fourth branch of government” (significant policy making by insulated technocrats and bureaucrats).

Illustrative Cases. Each chapter begins with a scenario, or case in point, presented somewhat polemically, to pique the students' interest. These cases demonstrate the central point of the chapter, and, often, the student is referred back to that case to illustrate concepts throughout the chapter.

More Case Content. In contrast to other texts that use cases, this book includes more cases and more of each case so students can better grasp what led to the lawsuit and how the Court resolved it. In addition to the introductory case in point, the book presents cases throughout each chapter and chapters end with several more cases relevant to the chapter material. The cases in the middle of chapters tend to be “classics,” whereas the cases ending each chapter represent more recent decisions on the same points of law.

Summary of Doctrines. Each chapter includes a summary of administrative law doctrines, legal principles, and constitutional tests that students have gleaned from the cases presented in the chapter and that they should be able to apply to the end-of-chapter cases or to hypothetical cases.

Pedagogical Design. The book is designed to be compatible with a problem-solving pedagogical approach. Questions at the end of cases query students' understanding of doctrines, principles, and constitutional tests and whether the court applied those doctrines, principles, and tests; modified them; or ignored them. Also, the summary at the end of each chapter is compatible with a pedagogical approach that uses testing by hypothetical cases and requires students to outline. Case text from the courts is presented in a double-column format, which should make for easy reference to specific cases.

Like the ESPN highlights of Administrative Law
By Whizy
This book was mandatory read for my Public Administration study. Unlike many of the Public Administration/Policy snoozer Text, this one is actually readable and well-worth its weight in gold. In it you'll find cascades of judicial case study on rulings that's shaped the Democracy and Bureaucracy of the United States. Administrative Law provides the reader with highlights into the thought processes (prevailing and dissenting opinions) behind the most relevant Judicial rulings (Supreme, District, Appellate, etc...) that affect our everyday lives as citizens. Equally as important, the Author presents the format in an extremely organized, easy-to-follow, easy-to-understand format for us non-lawyerly-type. I'm compelled to write a review for this book because it's one of the few Textbooks that's profoundly influenced my path in Public Service and provided me with a better understanding and appreciation for the nuts-and-bolts that make our Nation great. The one complaint I do have for the book -and for all Textbooks for that matter- is that it's quite heavy and difficult to lug around in a paperback/magazine-like fashion. In the not-so-distant future, I look forward to buying this reference Text in E-book format.

Amazing
By J
I received the book the day after I ordered it for a nominal delivery charge. The book was just what I needed for class, and it turned out to be the most important class I will take for my degree (at least IMHO). The spine was a bit loose and I found, oh the horror, a page with pink highlighter marks. All in all, I'm happy.
