About the Author
Professor Carla Willig graduated from the University of Manchester in 1986. She then embarked upon postgraduate studies at the University of Cambridge where she was awarded an MPhil in Criminology in 1987. She stayed at Cambridge in order to conduct her doctoral research into the 'Social Construction of AIDS Knowledge' which she completed in 1991. Professor Willig has held teaching positions at the University of Plymouth (1991-3) Middlesex University (1993-9) and City University London (1999 onwards). From 2001, she undertook additional training at Regents College, London, and qualified as an Existential Counselling Psychologist in 2005.

Wendy is a critical psychologist, working mainly, these days, in health. On the basis of her work on alternative approaches to health behaviour, she was appointed by the UK's NICE (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence) to its Development Group on Behaviour Change, preparing and disseminating recommendations to the National Health Service and other statutory bodies on 'best practice' in relation to behaviour change interventions and programmes at individual, community and population levels. Wendy is currently the chair of the International Society for Critical Health Psychology (ISCHP).

Wonderful Book on Marketing's Brightest and Best Writers

This book is a fantastic read, and is to my mind at least, the best book that Stephen Brown has written to date. In this book, he takes five world renowned marketing writers (Philip Kotler, Ted Levitt, Shelby Hunt, Wroe Alderson, Morris Holbrook) and develops an analysis of the writing styles of these authors. He also uses a variety of different interpretative frameworks to do this, such as Marxism, Literary Criticism, Subjective Personal Introspection and Postmodernism, all of which help to shed light on the literary styles of the marketing greats.

This book is highly educational, as it provides the reader with a complete overview of the works of these famous authors, and a highly engaging academic analysis of their writing styles. Brown also provides a chapter at the end of the book on the art (yes, art!) of good writing in marketing, and some tips which are useful to both seasoned academics and student beginners.

Overall, I think "Writing Marketing" is a must read for every student of marketing, undergraduate or postgraduate, assistant professor or Department Dean, as it is a lively and quite brilliant analysis of the best writers in the field of marketing, and one of the few texts that adequately addresses the subject of writing in the marketing discipline.

Grade 9 Up–This set includes numerous articles on Native American tribes, many biographical entries, and a variety of articles on cities and towns, ethnic and racial groups, and laws and policies. However, it is sometimes difficult to understand why a particular topic is given considerable space when another of seemingly equal importance is given only cursory coverage. For example, the entry on Boyle Heights, CA, an ethnically diverse community in Los Angeles, is four times the length of the entry on Los Angeles, and the article on Mexican Migration to California begins with the year 1945 with no reason given for the exclusion of earlier years. These problems notwithstanding, the articles included are useful. The extensive bibliography that appears at the end of each volume will be a valuable resource for students. A cumulative index is in volume two. This comprehensive survey of the spread of individuals and groups across the trans--Mississippi West contains more than 300 articles. Bakken, a history professor at California State University-Fullerton, and Kindell, a doctoral candidate at Iowa State University, worked with more than 100 contributors to provide coverage of individuals, groups, places, events, policies, and other topics. Examples of entries include Dry farming; Fresno, California; Gold; Homestead Act; Mormon colonization of Utah; Okies; Route 66; Women on the emigrant trails; and World War II defense industries. Among the 31 individuals who are covered are Stephen Fuller Austin, Levi Strauss, and Sarah Winnemucca. Entry length ranges from half of a page to 10 pages. Each entry includes suggested readings, and a "Master Bibliography" listing standard works as well as current research is repeated in each volume. Also in each volume are an alphabetical and a topical list of articles. Volume 2 contains several "Research Guides" for those who want to delve deeper into certain topics. The very detailed index is an important tool, since not all entry headings are intuitive. A few black-and-white maps and photographs are scattered throughout the text.

Emphasis is on ethnic and racial diversity, with topics such as Chileans and the California gold rush, Chinatowns, Euro-American migration of the overland trails, Japanese internment, and Trail of Tears. Tribal histories, such as Creek Nation and Washoe, are among the longest articles in the set. Many entries offer glimpses of individual struggles and movements that produced hostility and territoriality as well as innovation, husbandry, and stable nuclei of surviving cities. The writing is engaging, sometimes stirring. Commentary on demographics and social interaction illuminates the roles of simple folk in the exploration and settlement of the Great Plains and the gradual decimation and displacement of First Nations.

About the Author
Susan E. Israel is an independent researcher, writer, and literacy consultant and currently serves as President and Director of Reading Alliance for Catholic Education in Indiana, where she works with small and large corporations to enhance literacy products. Her special research interests are in the areas of reading comprehension, writing, and child-mind development as it relates to literacy processes. Israel served as assistant professor at the University of Dayton, and in 2005 she was awarded the University’s Panhellenic Council Outstanding Professor Award. She has also served on the national faculty at the University of Notre Dame Summer Program, where she taught reading and language arts methods. A former elementary teacher, she was awarded the 1998 teacher-researcher grant from the International Reading Association (IRA). Having been an active member of the IRA for over a decade, she has served on a number of IRA committees and interest groups and recently was president of the History of Literacy Special Interest Group. In addition, she has been active with the National Reading Conference. Israel has authored, coauthored, or edited over 15 books and volumes and is the senior editor of the recently published comprehensive volume, Handbook of Research on Reading Comprehension (Israel & Duffy, 2008). Other recent publications include Teachers Taking Action: A Comprehensive Guide to Teacher Research (with Cynthia Lassonde, 2008), Reading First and Beyond (with Cathy Collins Block, 2005), Collaborative Literacy (2006), Shaping the Reading Field (2007), Poetic Possibilities (2006), and Quotes to Inspire Great Reading Teachers (2006).

Dorothy Sisk holds an endowed chair in education of gifted students at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. Throughout her career, she has been intensely involved with the education of gifted and talented children. Sisk is an international consultant focusing on leadership, communication, and creativity development. She was a professor at the University of South Florida, coordinating programs for training teachers of the gifted, and former director of the US Office of Gifted and Talented in Washington, DC. She currently directs the C.W. Conn and Doroth Ann Conn Gifted Child Center at Lamar University and teaches courses in gifted education. She received the Distinguished Leader Award from the Creative Education Foundation (CEF) in 1989, the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC) in 1983 and 1994, the Creative Lifetime Award from CEF in 1994, and was selected for the Hall of Fame Award of CEF in 2005.

Sisk served as one of the founders and the first president of the American Creativity Association, and president of The Association for the Gifted (TAG), the Florida Association for the Gifted, and the World Council for Gifted and Talented Children, where she also was the executive administrator and the editor of Gifted International from 1980 to 1990. She has conducted training sessions throughout the U.S. and internationally. Sisk is the author of Creative Teaching of the Gifted; coauthor with Doris Shallcross of Leadership: Making Things Happen, The Growing Person, and Intuition: An Inner Way of Knowing; coauthor with E. Paul Torrance of Gifted Children in the Regular Classroom and Spiritual Intelligence: Higher Level Consciousness; and coauthor with Susan Israel and Cathy Block of Collaborative Literacy: Using Gifted Strategies to Enrich Learning for Every Student. In addition, she has contributed numerous articles and chapters in books on gifted education, creativity, and leadership development.



Cathy Collins Block is a Professor of Education at Texas Christian University. She has taught every grade level from preschool to graduate school, and was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association from 2002-2005. She has served or is presently serving on the Board of Directors of the National Reading Conference. Nobel Learning Communities, IBM Educational Board of Directors, and the National Center for Learning Disabilities. She presently serves on the Editorial Boards for the Journal of Educational Psychology, Reading Research Quarterly, The Reading Teacher, National Reading Conference Yearbook, and America Tomorrow. She has written more than 30 books and 80 research-based articles relative to literacy instruction and teacher education. She has also served or is serving on several elementary/middle school authorial writing teams for public/private school textbooks and literacy curriculum materials. She has written for Walt Disney Corporation, PBS Television Stations and other national media companies. She has received numerous honors as a teacher, including Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and Who’s Who in the World.

About the Author

Michael Ungar received a Ph.D. in Social Work from Wilfred Laurier University in 1995. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Maritime School of Social Work at Dalhousie University, Canada. He has published articles in such journals as Adolescence, Youth & Society, Qualitative Social Work, Social Service Review, the Journal of Systemic Therapies, and Child & Youth Care Forum. Dr. Ungar has been researching, writing, and teaching about resilience among youth for ten years in Canada, the U.S., Hong Kong, and Columbia. He oversees a federally funded international research project involving collaboration among researchers in eleven sites on five continents exploring similarities and differences in how resilience is understood, studied, and nurtured. As part of this, he will soon embark on a tour of Israel, England, Russia, and Tanzania. He recently presented two papers detailing his work at an international qualitative methods conference hosted by Sage and the International Institute for Qualitative Methods. He has a well-established international network of colleagues in this field across many disciplines, and many will be contributors to this volume.

impressive global scope

The many papers in the book discuss a difficult topic to measure. The resiliance or well being of children and teenagers, as experienced across different countries and across different cultural groups within a country. There are also related ideas, like the Quality of Life. The problem is of course that it is hard to get objective metrics. Especially if one wishes to do a cross-cultural comparison. Unlike more straightforward economic metrics, like income, which are a measure of materiality.

The book has an impressive global scope. It addresses examples drawn from many developing countries, or deprived groups in developed countries. Like Aboriginal Canadians, who suffer from far greater incidences of disease, substance abuse and stress than British-descended Canadians. Another example is a chapter on black South African children, who have been affected (or even infected) by HIV/AIDS. Very sobering, given the high incidence of this disease in South Africa.

In the context of developed nations, we see examples of Israeli youths trying to cope with terrorist bombs. Or children in Hong Kong, living in a very competitive and crowded environment.

About the Author

Howard S. Adelman is professor of psychology and codirector of the School Mental Health Project and its federally supported National Center for Mental Health in Schools at UCLA. He began his professional career as a remedial classroom teacher in 1960. In 1973, he returned to UCLA in the role of professor of psychology and also was the director of the Fernald School and Laboratory until 1986.

In 1986, Adelman and Linda Taylor established the School Mental Health Project at UCLA. The two have worked together for over 30 years with a constant focus on improving how schools and communities address a wide range of psychosocial and educational problems experienced by children and adolescents. Over the years, they have worked together on major projects focused on dropout prevention, enhancing the mental health facets of school-based health centers, and developing comprehensive, school-based approaches for students with learning, behavior, and emotional problems. Their work has involved them in schools and communities across the country. The current focus of their work is on policies, practices, and large-scale systemic reform initiatives to enhance school, community, and family connections to address barriers to learning and promote healthy development. This work includes codirecting a national Center for Mental Health in Schools, which facilitates the National Initiative: New Directions for Student Support.



Linda Taylor is codirector of the School Mental Health Project and its federally supported national Center for Mental Health in Schools at UCLA.

In her early career, Taylor was involved in community agency work. From 1973 to 1986, she codirected the Fernald Laboratory School and Clinic at UCLA. In 1986, she became codirector of the School Mental Health Project. From 1986 to 2000, she also held a clinical psychologist position in the Los Angeles Unified School District and directed several large-scale projects for the school district.

Taylor and Howard S. Adelman have worked together for over 30 years with a constant focus on improving how schools and communities address a wide range of psychosocial and educational problems experienced by children and adolescents. Great topic but...

The concepts are excellent but the read is not great. Not the best organized and the writing is not always straightforward. But you will get some very good ideas about school-wide learning support. The forms in the back of the book are very useful. I would recommend this book.

About the Author

Linda L. Putnam is a Research Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her current research interests include discourse analysis in organizations, negotiation and organizational conflict, and gender.  She is the co-editor of twelve books, including The SAGE Handbook of Organizational Communication (2014), Building Theories of Organization: The Constitutive Role of Communication (2009) and the author/co-author of over 180 journal articles and book chapters. She is a Distinguished Scholar of the National Communication Association, a Fellow of the International Communication Association, and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Academy of Management.

Mediocrity at its best

This book characterizes much of what is wrong with the current way in which text-books are pumped out by authors/academics/publishers to serve as a new yet ultimately qualitatively useless addition to the heap of knowledge in any given field. It is not that the topics presented here are useless, meaningless or anything of the sort, it is simply that the mediocrity with which they are written about and presented to the reader- supposedly a student attempting to learn about these subjects- is apparant on nearly every page.
If the mark of someone who truly understands their field of study is their ability to clearly and easily convey and teach it to others, than many of the contributors to this book do not truly understand their field, certainly not to the extent that they should when being held up as the fore front of their academic field. Read or Buy if you must, but turn to others sources for a better reading and learning experience.

This book provides a solid overview of Organizational Communication from a scholarly perspective. The authors do an excellenct job of identifying and elaborating on key issues, elaborating on related inquiry and elaborating on future considerations for the field.

Who writes an 800 page tome and has the nerve to call it a "handbook"?? The Boy Scouts of America publish a handbook. AAA publishes handbooks. These are books one can hold and read comfortably with one hand.

I'm not just complaining about the misnomer. This book is full of tedious, tiny print, too. This book does not "cut to the chase," ever, and is painful for anyone with an active mind to read. I've read better *textbooks* for Organizational Communication than this one, that were more reasonably sized than this.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, this book is meant to be kept on a shelf and used for periodic reference. This is not a book that I think is intended as a primer or even overview of an entire field of study. This is a book that maybe 15 people read in the US every year. I hated the book and I hated the class.

But, I did really enjoy our other textbook [title and author withheld] so I know that

About the Author
Robert Sylwester is an Emeritus Professor of Education at the University of Oregon who focuses on the educational implications of new developments in science and technology. He has written 20 books and curricular programs and 200+ journal articles. His most recent books are The Adolescent Brain: Reaching for Autonomy (2007, Corwin Press) and How to Explain a Brain: An Educator’s Handbook of Brain Terms and Cognitive Processes (2005, Corwin Press). He received two Distinguished Achievement Awards from The Education Press Association of America for his syntheses of cognitive science research, published in Educational Leadership. He has made 1600+ conference and staff development presentations on educationally significant developments in brain/stress theory and research. Sylwester wrote a monthly column for the Internet journal, Brain Connection, throughout its 2000-2009 existence, and is now a regular contributor to the Information Age Education Newsletter (http://i-a-e.org/).

A good explanation of the Brain

The Handbook is full of useful informations about the Brain. If you want to go into details this is not the book, but it gives you a broad picture of the anatomy and the most important electrochemical structures and functions. I like the Handbook very much and always bring it with me wherever I go.

About the Author
Paul L. Kimmelman is senior adviser to the CEO at Learning Point Associates. He has served as a consultant to the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority in England, and senior consultant to Project 2061 Professional Development Programs of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He worked in K–12 education for more than 30 years as a teacher, high school assistant principal, middle school principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent, and he has been an adjunct professor at several colleges and universities. Currently, he is adjunct professor at Argosy University. As superintendent in Lima, Ohio, he worked to help the district successfully comply with a federal desegregation order. He served as president of the First in the World Consortium when he was a superintendent in Illinois. The consortium was a collaborative group of school districts that were the first noncountry group to participate in the Third International Mathematics and Science Study. He has authored numerous articles and publications on education and presented at national and state education meetings. He is author of Implementing NCLB: Creating a Knowledge Framework to Support School Improvement (2006) and coauthor (with David Kroeze) of Achieving World-Class Schools: Mastering School Improvement Using a Genetic Model (2002). He was appointed by former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley to the National Commission on Mathematics and Science Teaching, chaired by former senator and astronaut John Glenn, and served on the Third International Mathematics and Science Study Technical Review Panel. He was also appointed by U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige to serve on the Teacher Assistance  Corps and participated in the Teacher-to-Teacher project, offering sessions on building teacher leaders.
