About the Author
Pamela Balls Organista, Ph.D., an African American psychologist, is Professor of Psychology at the University of San Francisco.  Her research interests are in the areas of prevention interventions and ethnic minority health issues.  Publications include the books, "Readings in Ethnic Psychology" (Routledge 1998) and "Acculturation" (APA 2003), which she co-edited with Kevin M. Chun and Gerardo Marin, and several articles on migrant laborers and AIDS and stress and coping in primary care patients.  She is the founding faculty coordinator of the Ethnic Studies Program at the University of San Francisco.

Gerardo Marin, PhD, is a Professor of Latin American Studies and Psychology, is Associate Provost at the University of San Francisco, and is an APA Fellow. He received his Ph.D. in social psychology from De Paul University. He has written more than 135 publications on topics that are relevant to Hispanics, including cultural norms and attitudes, risk behaviors, culturally appropriate methodology, and acculturation. He is the author of two widely used acculturation scales for Hispanics and was the editor of the recent Surgeon General's Report on Smoking regarding the four ethnic minority groups. In 1991, he coauthored the book Research With Hispanic Populations with Barbara VanOss Marin and is also the co-editor of Acculturation: Advances in Theory, Measurement, and Applied Research (2003) and Readings in Ethnic Psychology (1998).

Kevin M. Chun, Ph.D., a Chinese American psychologist, is Associate Professor of Psychology and Asian American Studies at the University of San Francisco, Senior Investigator at the University of California at San Francisco, and Alumni Scholar at the National Research Center on Asian American Mental Health, University of California at Davis.  His research focuses on processes of adaptation and their relation to health and psychosocial adjustment for Asian American immigrants and refugees.  Publications include "Readings in Ethnic Psychology" (Routledge 1998) and "Acculturation" (APA 2003), which he co-edited with professors Pamela Balls Organista and Gerardo Marin.  He is also a contributing author to several scholarly compendiums, including "Handbook of Asian American Psychology" and "Ethnocultural Approaches to Understanding Posttraumatic Stress Disorder."

I'm on a tight budget and Amazon got all the textbooks I needed cheaper than the textbook rental online and the return policy is very reasonable. I was worried at first that I will get a well worn book but the one I got is in brand new condition.

About the Author

 

Molly Andrews is Professor of Political Psychology, and Co-director of the Centre for Narrative Research (www.uelac.uk/cnr/index.htm) at the University of East London.  Her research interests include the psychological basis of political commitment, psychological challenges posed by societies in transition to democracy, patriotism, conversations between generations, gender and aging, and counter-narratives. Her current research is on biographical and political change in former East Germany. She is the author of Lifetimes of Commitment: Aging, Politics, Psychology and Shaping History: Narratives of Political Change, both published by Cambridge University Press. Narratives of Everyday Life will be published by Oxford University Press in 2013.



Corinne Squire is Professor of Social Sciences and Co-Director of the Centre for Narrative Research, University of East London. Her research interests are in HIV and citizenship, popular culture and subjectivities, and narrative theories and methods. Publications include What is Narrative Research? (Centre for Narrative Research, Bloomsbury, 2013), HIV Technologies in International Perspective (with Davis, Palgrave, 2010); HIV in South Africa (Routledge, 2007) and Public Emotions (with 6, Radstone and Treacher, Palgrave, 2006).

 



Maria Tamboukou (BA, MA, PhD) is Professor of Feminist Studies, and co-director of the Centre for Narrative Research at the University of East London, UK. Her research activity develops in the areas of critical feminisms, auto/biographical narratives and neo-materialist analytics. Writing feminist genealogies is the central focus of her work. She is the author of four monographs and co-editor of three volumes on narrative and ethnographic research methods, including Doing Narrative Research, Beyond Narrative Coherence and Dangerous Encounters: Genealogy and Ethnography.

About the Author

Professor Stephen Palmer PhD is an award winning psychologist. He is Founder Director of the Centre for Coaching and Centre for Stress Management, London. He is the UK's first Visiting Professor of Work Based Learning and Stress Management at the Institute for Work Based Learning, Middlesex University.

 

He has authored over 225 articles and 40 books on counselling, psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, coaching and coaching psychology, and stress management. He is UK Coordinating Editor of International Coaching Psychology Review, Executive Editor of Coaching: An International Journal of Theory, Research & Practice, and Consulting Editor of the International Journal of Health Promotion of Health Promotion & Education.

 

He is actively involved in a number of professional bodies. Currently he is Honorary President of the International Stress Management Association (UK); President of the International Society for Coaching Psychology; Founder Co-Chair of the London Branch of the British Association for Behavioural & Cognitive Psychotherapies; a Founder Director and Vice President of the Society of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy; a Director and Deputy Chair of the Association for Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy. He is a Former President and now Honorary Vice President of the Institute for Health Promotion & Education. He was the 1st Chair of the British Psychological Society Special Group in Coaching Psychology and was the 1st Honorary President of the Association for Coaching.

 

His interests include jazz, art and coastal walking.

Professor Nick Sitter joined the Department of Public Policy as Head of Department in 2008. His research interests include comparative European public policy, regulation, party systems, and Euroscepticism. Recent books include Understanding Public Management (Sage 2008) and Europe’s Nascent State: Public Policy in the EU (Gyldendal 2006). Nick Sitter holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science, Department of Government, on the development of competitive party systems in post-communist East Central Europe. He also holds an MSc in West European Politics and BSc (econ) in Government and History from the London School of Economics. Previous academic positions include lectureships in European politics and political economy at BI Norwegian School of Management, the American University, Florida State University, and Reading University, and a part-time teacher position at the LSE. Before completing his PhD, Nick Sitter worked as a political consultant in London.

About the Author
Jane A. G. Kise, Ed. D., is an educational consultant, specializing in teambuilding, coaching, and professional development. She is also the author or coauthor of over 20 books, including Differentiated Coaching: A Framework for Helping Teachers Change; Differentiated School Leadership: Effective Collaboration, Communication and Change Through Personality Type; Intentional Leadership; and LifeKeys: Discover Who You are. She holds an MBA in finance from the Carlson School of Management and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from the University of St. Thomas, both in Minnesota. Kise has worked with diverse organizations across the United States and in Saudi Arabia, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Her clients include Minneapolis Public Schools and various public and private schools, The Bush Foundation, NASA, Twin Cities Public Television, and numerous other institutions. She is a frequent workshop speaker and has presented at Learning Forward, ASCD, NCTM, NCSM, World Futures, and Association for Psychological Type International (APTi) conferences, including keynoting in Paris, Berlin, Sydney and Auckland. Kise’s research on coaching teachers for change received several awards. Her research on patterns in Jungian type and how students approach mathematics became a TEDx talk. Differentiated Coaching: A Framework for Helping Teachers Change

Awesome! I recommend this book to anyone who is responsible for helping teachers improve; administrators, educational consultants, instructional coordinators, instructional coaches, etc. I ordered this book because I wanted to figure out how to model differentiated instruction for the teachers that I work with. I not only have a game plan for differentiating my coaching, but also have a clear understanding of why what I was doing before was not working. This book helped me better understand myself, my teachers, and the students that we serve. Its the best book I've read on coaching yet.

Help for Teachers

This book has become invaluable to me in the work that I do to help teachers improve their performance. The materials are especially helpful in getting those teachers to take that first step in the performance improvement cycle, and that is self-evaluation. Getting a teacher to step back and examine what they are doing and how there may be a better way to operate is the most difficult part of an improvement cycle.

It's about learning styles

The author has taken the research and writing about learning (or more accurately personality) styles that teachers have been using to reach and teach students and applies it to working with other adults. We teach to our strengths, but we also need to look outside our comfort zone to accommodate others who have different styles of understanding/learning. If you are a coach or teacher leader who is struggling to communicate effectively with your colleagues, this would be a good resource to understand why, adapt to meet the needs of others and create a win-win situation. I got this book through interlibrary loan (even a good used book will cost you over $20), and it is good enough that I would consider buying it after reading it.

About the Author
Christine Skelton is Professor of Gender Equality in Education. She is Director of Research and a Deputy Head of the School of Education.

My early research focused on teacher professional development through classroom-based action research. In addition to that applied work, I also do qualitative research which examines the intersection of teachers' and administrators' personal and professional lives within particular institutional and social contexts. I am particularly interested in the role that gender plays as a part of the construction of self in students', teachers', and administrators' experiences. I also explore the advantages and dilemmas inherent in using qualitative research methods, in particular ethnography and life history interviews, as a way of bringing previously unheard voices and frameworks of meaning making into the field. I am currently moving into an exploration of some of these issues in international contexts. I have examined teacher education and staff development in Indonesia, South Africa, and China and worked directly with teachers in Indonesia to explorethe possibility of more student-centered learning. Most of my courses are interdisciplinary, drawing on work in the fields of Psychology, Sociology and History. In courses and seminars such as Comparative Education, Adolescence, Gender and Education, and Social and Cultural Perspectives in Education my goal is to help students examine the interactions among individuals, institutions, and social contexts. I am interested in exploring - and having students explore - the role of schools as social institutions that can both contribute to and simultaneously challenge existing social constructs and power relationships.

3. `Study Wise: A Program for Maximising Your Learning Potential';
All written by the same author.)

Because of my deep passion for books on study skills among other subjects, & also in the light of my consultancy work in the schools, & success coaching with kids/teens/adults, this wonderful book naturally caught my eye.

In essence, & for the purpose of completion, this Resource Specialist Guide is part of a systemic package that also includes the Consumable Student Workbook (or edition). You may also need to access the Reproducible Student Workbook (or edition) or the Reproducible Student Edition in the form of a CD-Rom.

The entire package is targeted primarily at teachers (as well as parents who yearn to become learning facilitators at home) in "special education" from grades 6 to 11 (middle school to high school). In this context, here lies its strength, although the stuff inside is suitable for those in general education.

In reality, the resource guide provides an incisive overview of the educational issues (or the instructional components) addressed in the student workbook. It has a primary focus on helping struggling students in meeting the demands of the mainstream curriculum.

Content-wise, from the perspective of study & thinking skills, this book is similar to `Study Max: Improving Study Skills', also by the same author, but the latter is targeted at students in grades 9-12 (high school). This book is structured in such a way that both teacher & student can make use of the book.

From the organizational standpoint, the chapters in this books are systematically arranged as follows:

Part 1: Learning styles & preferences (1 chapter);
Part 2: Getting organized (4 chapters);
Part 3: Turbo charging reading & studying (5 chapters);

There is another book, `Study Wise: A Program for Maximising Your Learning Potential', also by the same author, which is targeted at college students. In this particular book, & with a slight twist, there is a greater emphasis on developing critical thinking skills in the content areas & in the real world!.

From the organizational standpoint, the chapters in this books are systematically arranged as follows:

Part 1: Maximising your learning potential: figuring how to win in school (4 chapters);
Part 2: Developing school success system: learning how to study productively (5 chapters);
Part 3: Applying strategic intelligence: getting what you want, need & deserve (5 chapters);

Strategy-wise, all three books share a common thread: they help students acquire the basic & advanced study & thinking skills that will allow them to develop their full academic & vocational capabilities. They also provide step by step procedures for functioning more productively not only in school, but also in life.

In each case, students learn how to study efficiently & effectively, & they learn how to handle real- world challenges, deal with setbacks, solve problems, and avoid miscalculations that could be potentially life altering. In effect, they learn to think strategically, act smart, and study wise.

The author strongly believes in one fundamental premise in writing the books, which I fully concur: the difference between successful students & struggling students usually boils down to one basic thing:

`effectiveness & efficiency in their learning & studying strategies'.

Judging from his credentials, the author has apparently an impeccable track record with a field experience of more than 30 years. With a stable of 18 books, he certainly has an in-depth knowledge about learning as well as learning difficulties.

For the teacher as well as parent, I would also recommend you to read another of the author's books:

`Roadblocks to Learning: Understanding the obstacles that can sabotage your child's academic success'

This book, just like the above three books, has also been very well-written.

To sum up, each of the earlier three books has engaging, applicable techniques for student achievement, as well as hundreds of realistic activities & practical exercises, plus case studies, for immediate application.

I personally like Study Max over the other two, in terms of reader friendliness & action-packed learning. However, I rate 5 for all of them.

I am a doctoral practitioner student and learned practical tips to develop as a reflective and reflexive practitioner. On a specific note, I am learning that writting is a powerful tool to understand our feelings and clarify our understanding of our practice.
