Managing Understanding in Organizations, by Jorgen Sandberg, Axel Targama

Bringing a fresh perspective to the evaluation of management problems, this book scrutinizes the influence managers have on employees' understanding. It considers how managers use ideas and visions to frame their employees' internalized understanding of the external rules and instructions that govern their work. The book brings an interpretative perspective to the question of individual and group competence and looks at how this is linked with understanding. The book refers throughout to international case studies and considers the cross-cultural impact on management and understanding at work.

This book leaves no loose ends
By Bo-magnus Salenius
In this book, the authors have done what mgmt/leadership development experts have been asking for ever since the insight started to grow about the role of collective understanding, cultures and communities in management.

In my own work with management teams I often find managers almost unaware or uniterested in the current thoughts of their organisation. This book helps the reader to realise that the obstacles to change and management is what is already 'there' in terms of existing mindsets in the company. Any intervention needs to engage staff more in processes of exploration and reflection from the inside and less to cascade visions, values, scorecard or ready-made solutions from above.

Finally, I greatly appreciated the fact that this book does not simplify things that are not simple to begin with. The solid academic experience of the authors helps them to anchor their arguments in many scientific disciplines. They do this to such a degree that the practitioner reader actually gets to learn about these roots of reasoning and not merely some superficial buzzwords.

A great book I have recommended to all of my colleagues, CEO's and development executives as a must-read.

Misleading
By Disappointed Customer
The teachers in our school have a strong background in brain-based teaching and learning. We hoped that this book would use brain-friendly strategies to set up school routines because the book is based on insights from "with-it teachers"-- the best in the business, in other words.

Don't be fooled. This book's definition of "with-it teachers" includes one of the biggest problems in education today: teachers who have taught exactly the same way for so long that they are stuck in a rut and are on auto pilot, running their programs almost as though the students don't exist. They often use old techniques that are now considered ineffective-- sometimes even detrimental to student learning and success.

Here are a few of the more damaging suggestions in this book:

* If students are too loud, "stop immediately and assign mundane independent work." How can any teacher actually plan on wasting class time?! We have so little time as it is that all of it should be precious.

* Take away recess if students are too loud. Brain research clearly shows that students need recess time to process new information. Taking it away is just plain bad for brains.

* Have a time-out for pencils if students are tapping their pencils. Which teacher has time to waste running around stopping students from pencil tapping? Besides, this sets up a huge power struggle when students decide to tap on purpose. And what do you say to parents when the child says, "I couldn't work today because my teacher put my pencil in time-out"??

Rewards are highly touted in the book, despite new research demonstrating that material rewards are ineffective and damaging to long-term motivation and delayed gratification. So much for being "with-it" teachers. This is a book set in the past-- and a dangerous past at that.

A perfect introduction
By Archibald Clumpy
Words Apart is pretty much essential - as a study of inequality it's a perfect primer and as an introduction to the world (and, most importantly, the logical and ethical foundations) of Sociology it's the kind of textbook you hold onto even after that early-morning Soc class.

This type of context and analysis would greatly benefit our world were it to become the standard (aside from the hysterical pandering and mindnumbingly uninformed talking points that stand for discourse). It's a compact, breezy and nearly comprehensive foundation to build upon and I recommend it for anybody.

Review

"The framework used for thinking abou the mass media industry is excellent. And. . . the presentation of the material reflects the complexity of the mass media industry in a way that should be quite accessible to students, both conceptually and in terms of specific examples."

(Jane Downing)

"... a candid revealing and detailed study of the rapidly evolving media industry, especially in an increasingly media-saturated society. A thoroughly scholarly work which defly presents its in-depth study in largely jargon-free and accessible terms ideal for the non-specialist general reader. In largely jargon-free and accessible terms
By Midwest Book Review
The expert collaboration of David Croteau (Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richard, Virginia) and William Hoynes (Associate Professor and Chair of Sociology at Vasser College, Poughkeepsie, New York), The Business Of Media: Corporate Media And The Public Interest is a candid revealing and detailed study of the rapidly evolving media industry, especially in an increasingly media-saturated society. A thoroughly scholarly work which deftly presents its in-depth study in largely jargon-free and accessible terms ideal for the non-specialist general reader, The Business Of Media offers insights and a close scrutiny into what really goes on behind newspaper and broadcast journalism headlines.

incredibly knowledgeable
By Divine
The uniqueness of this book written by Croteau and Hoynes is above all that they introduce two approaches in understanding the characteristics of modern mass media and the correlations between the media and the social forces including public opinion, commercial, political and cultural conditions. Based on the two different categories - Market and Public sphere - it helps better understand the significant role and effectiveness of media that generate not only the public opinion, but also its influences on the mainstream in politics, business, education, culture and society. These two authors provide profoundly useful and informative resources to grasp the key points of media's role and power in society based on two distinctive perspectives introduced in this book. The main concept of this book is basically about understanding the media and economies in market and public theory and how these two spheres differ from each other in terms of circulation of information and commercial activities. The authors categorize two different approaches in order to effectively analyze the media system and each of these ideas is very well organized and clearly explained along with suitable and apparent examples provided which demonstrate the importance and different evaluation in each concept. Additionally, thanks to the great job that the authors showed in this book, the contents in each chapter are really uncomplicated and even interesting to understand without any confusion. I definitely recommend this book to people who have interest in media especially considered from business and economic views.

useful, if extremely basic, intro to modern media
By Robert J. Crawford
This is a good book about the evolution of the media, written at the undergraduate or even high school level. The core idea is that there is a potential serious conflict between the necessity to make a profit and the mission of news providers to seek the public good, the truth, etc. This is a worthy question to ask, particularly in a semi-textbook, and the author comes down in favor of regulation and independence from the whims of owners, e.g. Rupert Murdoch.

There are 4 trends: 1) growth via M&A of media corporations; 2) integration of different kinds of media in some companies, e.g. print, TV, internet; 3) globalization of offerings; 4) concentration of ownership. The rest is historical detail.

I can't say that I learned all that much, but this is a useful resource, presented systematically. Recommended.

Review
"Addresses childhood and adolescent violence from a fresh perspective:  the experiential world of the child and adolescent.  This is needed….The editors have succeeded in organizing an impressive, interdisciplinary group of contributors.  Balanced and thorough, the book should be very appealing to the intended audiences….It integrates a wide scope of material under the general topic, and by an excellent cadre of contributors." (James Howell 2005-07-06)

"By bringing together the literatures and crossing disciplinary lines, the book should have wide cross-disciplinary appeal….The key strength is the idea of an integrated approach to children and violence that includes children as consumers, victims, and perpetrators of violence….I think that any scholar working in the area of child and family violence would like a book like this one….It advances understanding of children and violence and is an excellent resource book for policy makers." (Elizabeth D. Hutchison 2005-07-06)

"…an excellent contribution to diverse fields (e.g., psychology, law, sociology)….The content is broad but appropriate in each of the three sections." (Eric F. Dubow 2005-07-06)

"A book with a unique perspective that will bring together research across several disciplines.  It's helpful to have such a single source that provides an overview of the research on children and violence in several different contexts." (Amy Nathanson 2005-07-06)

"The Editors and Contributors to this volume are excellent.  I am especially familiar with Dr. Singer's work, which is superb." (Brad Bushman 2005-07-06)

"The papers are well written and reflect timely information that is well documented from research, and also explore policy implications within each area." (D. S. Pierson 2006-11-27)

"Each chapter contains recommendations for legislators, policy makers, researchers, and families. This book should be on the desk, and minds, of legislators, attorneys, social workers and other mental health professionals who encounter and wish to ameliorate the effects of violence in the lives of their young constituents, clients, and patients."

The chapters included in the book are thoughtful and engaging, employing accessible language, useful (and not overbearing) suggestions for further reading, and well-selected examples from previously published works which are woven throughout the text to illustrate the discussion
Children's Geographies

[Researching Young People's Lives] has integrity and remains accessible to those without extensive experience of research in this field. It is a text that strikes a good balance between context and methods. As it is authored rather than edited, the book has a noticeable narrative spine which follows through each chapter. Few books of this kind, of high academic rigour and aimed at an academic audience, manage to integrate accounts of research in practice which give a personal and meaningful overview of methods. This book therefore makes a strong contribution to theb field; written in anaccessible and open style with much to offer to those with an interest in the study of young people’s lives
International Journal of SocialResearch Methodology

About the Author

Rachel Brooks is Professor of Sociology and Head of the Sociology Department at the University of Surrey in the UK and co-editor of Sociological Research Online. She has carried out a wide range of research projects on different aspects of education, with a particular focus on higher education and lifelong learning. Most recently, her research has focussed on: international student mobility; the funding of higher education; and a cross-national comparison of the experiences of university students with parental responsibilities. Rachel also has a strong interest in research methods. She co-authored Researching Young People’s Lives (Sage, 2009), and co-edited Negotiating Ethical Dilemmas in Youth Research (Routledge, 2013) with Kitty te Riele.

Dr Elizabeth Cleaver is Director of Learning Enhancement and Academic Practice at the University of Hull, UK where she leads work in the areas of teaching development, technology enhanced learning and quality enhancement. She returned to the HE sector in 2008 after six years as a senior researcher undertaking policy research and evaluation at the National Foundation for Educational Research (NFER). Her early academic career was in the discipline of sociology where she gained her PhD and taught and researched youth transitions to adulthood (early works are published under the name Kenyon). It was during this period that her interest in disciplinary approaches to teaching began. While studying for her Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning at the University of Portsmouth, UK, she became aware of the importance of teaching sociologically alongside thinking and researching sociologically. This has profoundly influenced her current work at the University of Hull where she is supporting academic teams to explore and develop their own disciplinary pedagogies.

Eleanor is a Research Director in the Children and Young People group at NatCen.  She has worked at NatCen for four years and works on both qualitative and quantitative projects.  Her research areas at NatCen include parental separation and child support, and anti-social behaviour.  Prior to NatCen she worked at the National Foundation for Educational Research where she carried out qualitative and quantitative research with children, young people and adults in a range of policy areas.

helpful general reference
By R. Brower
I highly recommend this book for graduate students and new faculty, but with one caveat: the bit about alternative writing formats isn't for you. I found Angela Thody's writing style engaging and sometimes humorous, which is unusual in this sort of book. To some degree, I felt this was one book that should have been split into two. The ideas about alternative formats are intriguing, but should be directed to tenured faculty who can afford to have research rejected from time to time. The subject of alternative formats would make an interesting book in itself, with experienced researchers as its intended audience.

The rest of the text about writing, publishing, and presenting academic work seemed like a more sophisticated version of Publish or Perish - The Educator's Imperative: Strategies for Writing Effectively for Your Profession and Your Schoolby Allan A. Glatthorn. I believe both are useful books for education doctoral students, practitioners, and new faculty. Glatthorn's book is written primarily for educators while Thody's audience also includes the humanities and social sciences.

As an interesting aside, Thody and Glatthorn take opposing positions on the issue of clever titles for research articles. Thody believes snappy titles get your work noticed. Glatthorn believes you should avoid them at all cost because referees perceive them as unprofessional. This gives you a little flavor for Thody and Glatthorn's philosophical differences.

It serves the needs of IT professionals. Generally, documenting any research for many IT Pros can be a challenge to say the least. This text teaches you think and work in structured manner; gather the right resources; asking the right type of questions; think critically, act responsibly with what you have discovered and then prepare and present your research proposal to the point of finally obtaining acceptance to go ahead with the necessary research.
