Making Sense of Multivariate Data Analysis: An Intuitive Approach, by John Spicer

Making Sense of Multivariate Data Analysis is a short introduction to multivariate data analysis (MDA) for students and practitioners in the behavioral and social sciences. It provides a conceptual overview of the foundations of MDA and of a range of specific techniques including multiple regression, logistic regression, discriminant analysis, multivariate analysis of variance, factor analysis, and log-linear analysis. As a conceptual introduction, the book assumes no prior statistical knowledge, and contains very few symbols or equations. Its primary objective is to expose the conceptual unity of MDA techniques both in their foundations and in the common analytic strategies that lie at the heart of all of the techniques. Although introductory, the book encourages the reader to reflect critically on the general strengths and limitations of MDA techniques. Each chapter includes references for further reading accessible to the beginner.

Review
“This book serves as a resource for readers who want to have an overall view of what encompasses multivariate analyses. The author has discussed some important issues rather philosophically (e.g., theory vs. data analysis). These points are valuable even for readers who have extensive training with multivariate analyses.” (Jenn-Yun Tein)

“This book is a helpful guide to reading and understanding multivariate data analysis results in social and psychological research.” (C. Y. Joanne Peng)

An essential text for any behavioural researcher
By D. Jackson
'Making sense of multivariate data analysis' is an indispensable text for both novice and seasoned behavioural researchers. Associate Professor John Spicer takes the reader on a journey of discovery, where the complexities, nagging questions, and mysteries of univariate, bivariate, and particularly, multivariate data analysis are revealed. These revelations are largely free from the statistical symbolism and algebraic complexity that often serve to confuse those who are unfamiliar with higher-level statistics. In my own research, I have already used this book on several occasions to help de-mystify some of the concepts explained in larger texts on this subject. The manner in which the subject matter is expressed is highly articulate, and renders an interesting journey for the reader. Dr. Spicer shows how the subcomponents and building blocks of multivariate data analysis fit together to produce a coherent picture. Even those who have been using other comparable texts will benefit from this book, and the insights that Dr. Spicer provides. 'Making sense of multivariate data analysis' creates elegant and logical simplicity out of a subject area that is often considered to be confusing, daunting, and complicated.

Recommended graduate text
By STEVEN HUMPHRIES
John Spicer's book conceptually exlains multivariate concepts with a wonderful conciseness and clarity. For example with this text my students quickly grasp that the unstandardized regression coefficients can convey important information about the magnitude of impact not readily obtainable from the standardized betas. Positive feedback from my graduate psychology students confirms that I will be retaining this as the compulsory text in my multivariate data analysis paper.

Amazingly clear and useful conceptual explanations
By John W. Sipple
A very useful, practical, and deeply conceptual book. I use this for a graduate quantitative research methods course and the students have loved it. Without relying much at all on formulas and mathematics, Spicer uses a remarkable economy of words to explain and illustrate the complexity and beauty of quant methods. Much more than statistical explanations, Spicer teaches us all the why's and how's of the most fundamental and critical questions we must face when engaging in multi variate data analysis.

Review
"The book tackles a major health problem that is significant to our educational system. It provides considerable evidence to support childhood obesity as a problem of interest for our nation." (Dolores Huffman, Associate Professor of Nursing 2005-08-17)

"The book provides a good background history of how the shifts in education policy have changed over the past 80-something years and have developed a sedentary society. It demonstrates the challenges that principals face today." (James Gostomski, Physical Education Teacher 2005-07-27)

"The book makes a distinct contribution to the field because of the timeliness of the subject matter, the severity and demands of the issue, and the need for more resources addressing this subject." (Stephanie Slowik, School Counselor 2005-08-15)

"This concise and comprehensive text provides an outstanding game plan at the tactical and operational levels for motivated building principals." (The School Administrator, May 2007 2007-05-01)

"The authors present principals with a strategy guide for tackling the obesity epidemic within the school walls. A valuable first step for school administrators wondering how to begin improving the health of their students." (PsycCRITIQUES, August 2007, Vol. 52(33) 2007-10-12)

"Schumacher and Queen's book fits very nicely with the kind of curricular and programmatic resources available to school personnel regarding the treatment and prevention of overweight and obesity. The authors did a good job at making medical information accessible to someone who might lack expertise in that area." (Education Review: A Journal of Book Reviews, January 2008 2008-07-15)

Review
"A timely study on the implementation of NCLB in 6 states during the initial phase of the reform. The authors' policy recommendations will be particularly useful to policy makers and practitioners in designing more effective strategies to improve schooling quality for the least advantaged children. This book will be widely adopted in graduate courses in educational policy and intergovernmental relations." (Kenneth Wong, Professor 2005-02-02)

"The well documented and thorough approach to collecting the data is a major strength. The material fits with my experiences as a practicing principal. This book can serve as a catalyst for quality conversation that is so drastically needed about how to make NCLB do what it is intended to do–ensure that every child is successful!"

(Bonnie Tryon, Principal 2005-02-03)

"This is an important, topical book that provides a deep look at fundamental issues in the design and implementation of No Child Left Behind."

(Richard F. Elmore, Gregory Anrig Professor of Educational Leadership 2005-02-17)

"This is a welcomed illustration of the multitude of ways the NCLB law affects children and schools." (PsycCRITIQUES, February 2, 2006 Issue 2006-02-08)

"One of a few empirical, multistate examinations of the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 with a focus on how the law affects minority and low-income students. Presents appropriate political and historical context, original data and analyses, and well-researched recommendations on how to improve public schools." (The Harvard Educational Review, Spring 2006 2006-03-15)

"A valuable addition to the body of literature looking at NCLB implementation. The systematic approach the authors use to examine complex policy issues is refreshing and adds significant strength to their critiques of NCLB―as policy and as it has been implemented." (Teachers College Record, Vol. 108, No. 1 2007-07-02)

Leadership and the Art of Change: A Practical Guide to Organizational Transformation, by Lee Roy Beach

Leadership and the Art of Change is a unique book in that it focuses on a leader's central and most daunting task―achieving organizational change that successfully addresses external and internal threats and opportunities. Author Lee R. Beach uses six prime responsibilities as the framework for discussing change leadership: external and internal environmental assessment to identify required changes, organizational culture as a constraint on change, vision for motivating change; plans as a map for change, implementation to produce change, and follow-through for institutionalizing achieved changes and making ongoing change a part of the culture.

Book Review
By GabeVS1
Synopsis

Leadership and the Art of Change is a conversational book that approaches the concept of leadership with a specific researched view. That view is, at the heart of leadership is organizational change. The book claims that "Leadership is the art of producing appropriate changes in an organization" (Beach, ix). The book does not state the foundation of leadership is that one must be followed. It does not state a difference between management and leadership. The only premise for leadership as outlined by the author is that change within the organization is what leadership is about. It states that the goal is to have authentic leadership, not autocratic delegation. The change is done practically through 6 outlined responsibilities:

1. (Assessment) Understand the internal and external environment of the organization
2. (Culture) Understand the organization's culture
3. (Vision) Create a vision and obtain buy-in from the entire team
4.(Plans) Design a plan that moves towards the vision of the future
5. (Implementation) work with others to maintain momentum of the change and monitor its progress
6. (Follow- through) get the change "institutionalized" and help the entire team accept change as something that will continually happen

These prime responsibilities are based on interviews and analysis on various high profile corporate leaders. There is integration of a seventh practical leadership responsibility throughout the six steps, which is working together. I assume it is left off the main six because of this integration, however I dare say it is more important than any of the six. Though the book says it is a practical guide to leadership, in the title is the word "art." The word Art, in it of itself, holds no real boundaries. It is open to interpretation, self description and universal acceptance. Do six practical responsibilities work to realize the title of this book? It does, because at the heart of leadership is that there is no formula. Charisma and responsibilities do not a leader make. Each situation is different and it requires leaders to "do a good job while being decent, reasonable, and responsible." (Beach, xvi) Being able to make decisions in the moment is a culmination of personal experience, knowledge and personality of the leader. No textbook can provide every clear cut answer for every situation a leader faces; that uniqueness makes it art. The art is indeed in the eye of the beholder who, in this case, is the leader.

This book was a good way to understand functional principles of a leader and a manager, even if it does not really make a distinction between the two.

Resource and reference book for my master's project
By lowee9294
I purchased this book to use as reference and resource for my master's project. My advisor led me to it and at first I was going to borrow a copy. Now I am glad that I bought it, definitely worth the price. It has lots of stuff in it; various interventions, articles to go look at, etc. Being a book worm like I am and a nerd to boot it was like Christmas in June. I use it daily for my project, often for my work with this population and have recommended it to colleagues. It is clear to read, has quick reading graphs and gets to the point fast.

Good resource for convincing schools
By JBug
I think this is a pretty good resource for parents who are trying to convice schools to use interventions that have the support of research behind them. It's written at a level that most lay-people could understand, but gives brief descriptions of each intervention and the research behind it.

Provides easy to comprehend insight to the autisic mind
By Karen
As a teacher of students with special needs, it's important to really understand how the mind of autism works. This insight helps a teacher or anyone "normalize" this disorder as the issues those with autism face are similar to all human functioning....their struggles are at the extreme of what everyone faces who makes an attempt to improve communication and relating to others. Yet the big difference is we help them arrive and better ways to interact with their world. Although, isn't that what teachers and parents do with all children? This book is well worth a read and a reference book that remains on my shelf.
