About the Author
Catrina Brown, M.A., M.S.W., Ph.D., is an assistant professor at the School of Social Work at Dalhousie University in Halifax, cross-appointed to Women’s Studies and Nursing. She is also a feminist psychotherapist in private practice with a focus on eating “disorders”. She is the co-editor of Consuming Passions: Feminist Approaches to Eating Disorders and Weight Preoccupation. She conducts research in the area of women, eating “disorders”, body image, trauma and sexual abuse, depression, and alcohol use problems.
Tod Augusta-Scott, M.S.W. is the program coordinator at Bridges - a domestic violence counselling, research, and training institute in Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada. He has taught at the School of Social Work at Dalhousie University in Halifax. He works as a consultant on issues of domestic violence for both government and non-government organizations. He is currently an editor for the Canadian Journal of Social Work. He publishes and presents his work internationally. His practice focuses primarily on issues of violence, sexual abuse, sexism, racism, and homophobia.

Recent Developments Expanding the Theory

This book builds on the pioneering work of Michael White of Australia and David Epston of New Zealand. The Canadian editors are practicing psychologists working in the fields of domestic violence and eating disorders. Through their research they found that surface descriptions of the problems did not yield solutions as well as did narrative therapy. This lead to the publication of this book containing reaearch from a wide variety of contributors.
The book is organized into four sections with the following general headings:

Challenging Essentialism
Re-Authoring Preferred Identities
Combining the work of White and Epston with the new contributions offers a comprehensive introduction to the history and theory of narrative therapy. This book sharpens you as to how the discourse of our time influence both professionals and people seeking help.
Reading this book is a vaccination against the tendency to individualize, naturalize/ geneticalize and labelize problems such as anorexia/ bulemia, drug-/alcohol addiction, perpetrating of violence etc.
E.g.: As eating disorder was non-existing in Fiji prior to the importation of television (and western culture) - it was short after not the case. Keeping this in mind, the growing intens purchase for the eating disorder gene seems disturbingly shortsighted and with hazardious implications.
